review

Matrix Games and Simulations Canada combine and completely remake two classic NATO vs. Warsaw Pact wargames into a new classic. Based on the original wargames “Main Battle Tank: North Germany” and “Main Battle Tank: Central Germany”, Flashpoint Germany is a new grand tactical wargame of modern combat. Every aspect of modern grand tactical warfare is included, from advanced armor, air and helicopters to chemical and tactical nuclear weapons. Step into the most dangerous war.. . that never was.

I think that is a pretty good review. The sound score is what pulled the overall score down.

I thought that was a pretty good, on the mark review...apart from the sounds comment. I personally think the sounds in this game, for a wargame, are awesome...in particular, the spandrel/milan atgm sounds and artillery barrages.

Nice work Rob.

good thing is new reviews show up randomly on the main PC page so there is a good amount on advertising in that. excellent review though. i saw no negatives besides the sound.

Very good review. It describes very well good points and issues.

In my point of view, the issues are mainly:
- low number of maps
- lack of infantry
- weak IA or curious balance betzeen PW and NATO
- poor sounds

Good points are:
- general game concept (originality, no micromanagement, realism)
- ergonomy and game design (including the very nice maps !)
- simple but addictive
- multiplayer options
- clear manual

I also agree, the sounds are great in this game IMO

- poor sounds

I have to disagree strongly. Whilst there aren't a plethora of sounds in the game, they are ample for a wargame AND they sound spectacular...imo

That has to be a switch...I personally can't stand any kind of music in any kind of game....my stereo is for that.

Agreed...the music files in games are generally small, so they loop every few minutes to the point of tedium anyway........in games where I can load my own music files in them (like HOI), I quickly do so........

Since FPG does not require a CD in the drive to play, why not just put in your favorite mix or battle music and let it play? Personally, I think FPG goes well with some old Metallica (i.e. "Kill Em All" or "Ride The Lightning").

Nothing like some Wagner, Shostakovich, Holst, or Prokoviev blasting away while plotting your next move!...[:)]

True, those would work quite well too - particularly the first three IMHO.

I think, considering the era and location, the Scorpions might be more appropriate[8D][:D]. Not to mention Megadeth: Peace sells...but who's buying?[;)]

What, nobody here putting in a vote for Wierd Al? I used to have the "Alternative Polka" and some of his other greats playing during the game as test music. Of course I didn't want to admit that until after the game review came out....

I prefer Pat Boone's bizarre metal album. The Smoke on the Water cover wouldn't fit the timeframe but it would be a memorable game start [:D]

Ok, Alternative Polka is fantastic for a laugh and I love Weird Al's stuff, but I definitely can't listen to that while wargaming. Sorry, Rob. [:D]

Have you hear William Shatner's new album? Not to be missed, worth listening to once, definitely.
