BII War in Europe

Post by JSS »

In case you haven't had a chance to play the awesome scenario War in Europe: June 1941, currently on its beta test version 0.02, here's a look at my first Axis advance into Mother Russia[:D]

This thread will initially show the opening German advance for Armee Group North and Armee Group South. An overview of the game map is the third post.

Armee Group North

After 7 turns (Jun 1941 to late Fall 1941, winter hits next turn[:(] ) Blitzkrieg has reached the outskirts of Moscow, spires of the Kremlin can be seen but not taken. Leningrad is cutoff but not taken...

But I thought the scenario has no AI and was designed for the sole PBEM ?
An I play it against the computer (solo mode) ?

Nukkxx, JSS is either playing himself or against a PBEM opponent : Yes you are right about it only being made for PBEM purposes

Here's a look at how things went the next turn (OCT 41)...

Allied resistance is now centered around Leningrad, Moscow, Stalingrad, and along the Suez Canal.

Situation at Moscow

JSS, I don't mean to be rude by this but could you provide some description on what you are planning to do and what you are doing and some other things? An AAR is nothing without a combination of pics 'n' description. [in my opinion].
Now I wonder when JSS takes his russian turn he's being soft on the nazis....[:)]

I am playing JSS on this one - and it is rather tough going as the Allies. The biggest problem is to get used to defending without being able to entrench -- he can pretty much get an overrrun at any time, except in the city and anything in clear terrain is gone quickly (and there is a lot of Steppe out there).

North Africa - I messed bad in the very beginning (lost my supply truck) and I did not realize right away the amount of reinforcements he brought into N-Africa. I did gather all the forces in the area - but I mentioned this in another post - I just don't think the allies have much of a chance there, if the Germans / Italians bring in constant reinforcements. Now trying to hold the Suez Canal line - but I don't think it will hold (may have been able to hold it with better play - right now I only have some 12 units left down there. I brought in some units to land in western North Africa - but they can not land very far east. I also did not realize that the Sea Lion sea lanes were taken out (was afraid of a little England invasion).

Eastern Front : Balance seems to be much better now - although I still have not really made any counterattacks.

Leningrad is fully surrounded -- it's tough to hold a line to the city -- or any line for that matter. Because of the mobility of the Panzers, all JSS has to do is find a weakspot, break through and before you know it, 10 -15 units are surrounded. That is a big problem pretty much all over the map - if you want to hold somewhere, first you can not leave ANY openings - and then it is very difficult to protect anything in clear terrain (check the CRTs - it's just a disaster in the making). So Leningrad is just now to holding the city hexes -- another reason it's difficult to protect a road to Leningrad is the Northern flank, where the Germans are pushing south - it's not a big force, but enough to make you worry about being cut off (which just happened to 5 units in that area).

Moscow: the big pocket going around the city -- I started the defenses as far out as the terrain permitted, and I am now pushed back into the city, but I do seem to have a large force available to hold the city - plus comrade winter has arrived. Not sure what the attack odds are going to be for JSS - but I have to hold....

Between Moscow and Stalingrad: There is not much terrain to make a stand + not enough units - so I pretty much gave up on that area - I think this is costing me some of the much needed reinforcement hexes and also this allows a possible push to surround Moscow, but hopefully I can avoid that.

Stalingrad -- I don't think he can take the city (unless I mess up) -- it's urban hexes and a major river. But it's a small pocket to hold and if I am hoping to attack later - I am would to keep a larger area to start from. Anything south is difficult to hold (wide open terrain) - so we shall see. I am little worried about some of the reinforcement hexes moving to undesirable places - but we will wait and see...

Ehoch, when this weather strikes you HAVE to go on the counterattack at places! You need to batter down his Armies. Send ALL allied formations into North Africa!

Keep up the game guys.. I am keen to see how it plays out.. there has been some criticisim that the version 0.2 version that you are playing has made it too easy for the Allies.. it seems this is not the case.. so that pleases me..
Isn't that bizarre?
