What's the game speed, as compared to previous versions? Thanks.

Actually managing the game, I think it's just right...but if you can set it to Slow, Normal, Fast, Very Fast or use a slider for custom.

Tbh, I have no idea. I'm just having a ball playing game after game after game...it's that much fun!

On a 3.0ghz machine with a gig of RAM, it takes about 20 minutes to sim a 162 game season for a 16 team league.

This is a man who enjoys playing each game of his chosen team -- I do the same. A season can be played within weeks, depending on one's time constraints.

BTW, Judge, it's a GAME, not a MATCH. You gotta get accustomed to American usage in sports terminology. [;)]

Great. You're making good progress.

Now, here's something you and I can learn together -- the new defensive settings are giving me some problems, especially in setting the outfield shallow or deep. Example-- bases are loaded, and there's one out. This situation has given me fits. You're ahead by one run. This is where the strategy starts getting tricky. Do you play with the infield in, which increases the chance of getting the runner out the plate, or elect to deploy the outfield deep or shallow?

The outfield settings are all new to 2007, and add a level of complexity that can even leave veteran players scratching their heads.

All this only makes one appreciate the characteristics of opposing batters even more. If the batter has a high PH (hit for distance) rating, maybe you'd play the outfield deep. If he has a high CH (hit for contact --that means just his chance of hitting the ball), then you may want to play the outfield shallow.

All of that just means that each game you manage has its own built-in drama. I think that a lot of the career players are missing this experience.

Oh, no we're not. I'm a confirmed career-simmer... and as part of the beta test I managed a full season, managing every match. ([;)])

Beta's over... and I'm in my third season, and still managing every inning! This particular season has a fantastic four-way tussle for the lead of my eight-team division.

It has really changed some of my attitudes about the game - as a career-simmer, I was very heavily weighted towards 'ratings' over 'statistics', and tended to be patient with players who were slumping.

As a manager, I have no patience! I've gone through a lot more players: mid-season trades to move a player along just because he isn't performing, and bringing players up from AAA (or even AA!) if they *are* performing. My absolute stud hitter right now has 75 Contact, 68 Power, and 53 Eye - he's batting .336 with a .382 OBP, where he's 4th in the league for average and Home Runs, second in Runs and RBI, sixth in hits, first in stolen bases... and when I was playing ratings, I wouldn't have credited that.

I've also traded away (and even released outright!) some players who weren't performing, signing in-season free agents on occasion, which I wouldn't have done while career-simming.

It hasn't always worked out - the 2nd season league "Best Pitcher" award went to Jimmy Kirby, a 30-year-old left hander who'd started with me, coming off a 6-7 season. He was 3-1 but had a 5.20 ERA after seven games, and as part of a 5-for-2 trade, I dealt him to Chicago. He went 16-7 with a 3.23 ERA over 36 starts, winning the award... while of the two players I got, the pitcher failed to perform and was dealt on later in the same season, while the hitter performed well that year, but is at a wimpy .218 this season.

I don't see the point of simming the games...people doing that seem to be missing a BIG chunk of the fun...ie the tension (as you said KG). I will manage every match and the only time I'll sim is I have to finish (wife shouting it's time for beddy byes) quick...but I rue doing it and won't easily.

I'm not at the stage where I am hiring and firing. I still don't know enough about the stats. But watching it play out, I can see how missing a pitch affects a batsmans average etc...but there are LOADS of stats here and the abbreviations are killing me...I'm finding a few and keeping notes, but they're still a bugger to remember.

It's excellent that the game plays in a window and I can skip between that and my "abbreviations" document! [:D]

Judge...Keep up the good work....youre quickly becoming very familiar with the game of baseball. One thing is certain. It is a great game, because we are always learning, even those of us who have followed the game for many years. Puresim is a great game to learn the game of baseball.
