New MS operating system

Post by Arckon »

With MS releasing there new operating system in the 6 - 12 mnths will a patch to upgrade TOAW III to there new system be done or could we find ourselves in similar problem of compatability issues?

I know ongoing support will be honoured by Matrix but I hope we do not find ourselves having to buy yet another iteration of TOAW/Battlegrounds/Campaign Series when MS new operating system comes out.

I haven't tried it yet, but TOAW III uses pretty generic stuff. It uses the Windows MultiMedia interface for playing videos, it uses Windows BitBlt calls for graphics, and it uses a library that calls the DirectSound interfaces for the sound.

I believe that previous versions had problems because of custom sound and video libraries. Since those aren't there, I'd expect it to continue working on the next couple of versions of windows (plus most emulators).

Unless there's a very compelling reason, I don't plan to upgrade from DirectX 9 for a while either, since it may break people running Win98.

Win98????? I thought only the Pentagon used this still.[:D]

Seriously, I don't see ANY reason why people have not dumped that old system for XP.

Ahem. I am still running win98 SE... the reason is ah...sorry, you are not authorized to access this file.[:)]
I am a student and simply don't have the money to buy me a new comp. Besides that, i won't buy it, i would build it. And besides that i (still) have no reason to upgrade to a new one, even if i had the money.

FWIW, I'm using the Windows Vista Beta 2 right now and running TOAWIII with no real issues. Granted I am doing it in WinXP compatibility mode, but it seems to work fine, which I can't say for quite a few other games....

Firstly, can you confirm that you actually NEED XP compatibility mode, and secondly can you list any wargames and flight or sub-sims you might have tried that won't run at all? The sooner we start hassling for patches the better!

Thanks for replies.
I already have TOAW III so good to hear all should be fine.
Was looking at the Campaign Series and possibly the Battlefields, but didn't want to purchase these future releases if there were going to be issues with new operating system.
