Re: Wars in the Americas impressions

Thanks for the extended explanation!

It does sound reasonable to have focused on the Humaita campaign, given the huge variations in troop density and tempo. It sounds like the US Civil War's contrasts between, say, the DC-Richmond theater and the trans-Mississippi theater, except more so. I guess ...

Wars in the Americas impressions

I just wanted to share my impression of the DLC. I quite liked what I have played so far, and hope that the designers go on to cover more 19th century conflicts with this system. This includes some minor spoilers.

So far, I have tried the Paraguay war scenario once as the Coalition, the Pacific war ...

Re: why some hexes are immune to other hexes' return fire?

I understand that the firing unit can roll forward to an optimum position, shoot, and roll back. But should not the targeted unit have a brief window of opportunity to return fire to that optimum position before the enemy rolls back, especially if it can be presumed to have some units on overwatch ...

Re: Helicopter vs helicopter

Thanks for the quick answer. To clarify, do both aircraft need to be closing to fire, or could one set up an attack run against a suspected stationary enemy helicopter? There are definitely times when I would have liked to do this, when no specialized AA assets were in position, but I recognize it ...

Helicopter vs helicopter

Playing tutorial #3 I had my Cobras flying a hex away from Hinds in open terrain and sharing the same admittedly wooded hex, but they do not engage. I assume that the Cobra's autocannon, at least, can fire on aerial targets.

Is this WAD? I saw nothing in unit SOP that suggested helicopters won't ...

Re: Combat Mission: Cold War Public Beta Tournament

I am also having difficulty playing the tournament on Steam, v 1.05.

I logged in and saw the game file in my active games. I joined, and saw the Soviet flag and set a password. The game file then disappeared from my active games, and I have not seen it since.

It could be that it's just waiting for ...

RE: Unrealistic Helicopter Command, House Rules?

I was at first disappointed by the lack of C&C rules, but units' limited maneuverability actually does a pretty good job of forcing the player to come up with an initial plan and stick to it.

Also, it's hard enough to beat the AI as it is!

RE: A few suggestions to make C&C more transparent

<t> Okay - I can see the complications if you're trying to do Headquarters in the Saddle.<br/>
<br/>
Still, a real-life commander would have far more visual clues as to what is going on than a player in any game, not to mention a staff that can help him figure things out.<br/>

RE: Man for man, pike and shot seem terribly ineffective in Pike and Shot

<r> <QUOTE><s>[quote]</s>It was a trade-off. The new formations protected the shot so they could fight in the open without being run over by enemy pikes or cavalry, and fend off enemy shooters (such as reiters) from the pikes. The trade-off was a partial reduction in frontal close combat power.

RE: Man for man, pike and shot seem terribly ineffective in Pike and Shot

<t> That makes sense - and I'm glad that demonstrating the reasons for change in the formations is a major objective of the game. Right now I'm playing Austria vs France around 1610-20, and there are a lot more varieties of P&S to chose from.<br/>

But even so, the big deep formations - early ...

RE: Man for man, pike and shot seem terribly ineffective in Pike and Shot

<r> <QUOTE><s>[quote]</s>The game factors combat power by UNIT SIZE, not # of men per se. (You can find a units size in the UNIT xls file spreadsheet) <br/>
A streltsy unit is likely 600 size while an early pike/shot unit is 1600 <br/>
There is a cap for infantry units in how much SIZE of the unit ...

RE: A few suggestions to make C&C more transparent

<t> That's good to know - and I'll try it - but it's not intuitive, easy to remember, or transparent when it's going on. In fact, I'd go as far to say that if you need tricks like that, then that shows up a deficiency in the system. None of this is a criticism of the AI in itself, just of the ...

Campaign system - very simple but works really well

<t> <br/>
I just want to praise the elegance of the strategic system. Despite its simplicity, it does a really good job of modelling the ebb and flow of 17th century warfare - much better than more complicated treatments like EU, I'd say.<br/>
<br/>
A key design decision seems to be to allow ...

RE: A few suggestions to make C&C more transparent

<t> Thanks for the answers! Misinterpreted orders, if that's what's happening, seems to be taking realism too far. Players shouldn't be trying to guess if a weird move is a feature, or a bug, or the player not grasping a nuance in the TC flagging system.<br/>

A few suggestions to make C&C more transparent

<t> <br/>
I really would like to like this game, with its epic scale and its commitment to realism. I can deal with abstracted graphics. But the command and control is so baffling, and so unpredictable, that I have no way to tell whether things are working as designed or bugged.<br/>
