Campaign system - very simple but works really well

In the age of Pike and Shot, mighty struggles erupted across Europe for causes religious, political or dynastic. The Thirty Years War raged across Germany and beyond, leaving devastation in its wake, but saw the rise of great commanders such as Count Tilly, Wallenstein and King Gustavus Adolphus of Sweden, and rapid developments in battlefield tactics.

Campaign system - very simple but works really well

Post by nijis »

I just want to praise the elegance of the strategic system. Despite its simplicity, it does a really good job of modelling the ebb and flow of 17th century warfare - much better than more complicated treatments like EU, I'd say.

A key design decision seems to be to allow weaker armies to always decline battle, at a penalty - because they could, almost always, until the 19th century. Pitched battles between mismatched forces were incredibly rare, and are also tedious to play.

I'd love to see some chrome added to this in expansions or DLCs - maybe some diplomacy, more complicated siege, naval, and forager-vs-patrol skirmish warfare, a longer time frame, etc. But please keep the elegant kernel of the original!

Any hope of this ever coming to IPad?

I love the combat but have always missed 'context' to my battles

Unfortunately Apple is no longer accepting any submissions (even updates) for 32-bit programs, and Pike and Shot uses a 32-bit engine.

What will happen in the longer term I cannot say, but sadly it is not currently economically viable (in terms of programmer time) to convert the engine to 64-bit.

I hope this is ok to ask here...

IS the campaign simply one battle after the other?
I was hoping it had some management as well...
ala 4x...
"Tanks forward"
