RE: Ralegh's tips on starting a new game

Hey folks it's some time since I played but in the past I always tried to trade "respect neutrality of province x" for a long term alliance with, say, Turkey. When Raleigh says make treaties -- this is a part of the game you must not ignore.

RE: 4 star generals

Too true, you have to set the glory levels high. I set a very high glory limit or Max glory after Max time (I forget) and obtained a massive empire. Wanted to see what would happen, and how big I could grow.

RE: Surrender Terms-Shifty Allies.

I'm fine with another country getting first pick of nations. What I hate is when I sign a treaty and another nation gets the provinces I got in my treaty. That has to be fixed.

this would be nice (though ahistorical), making a massively cultured Russia or Turkey or Spain possible.

RE: 4 star generals

<t> Not true! What difficulty level are you playing at? At normal, I just set up a massive alliance with Spain and Turkey (and between Spain and Turkey) with a few treaties, using "respect neutrality of" clauses. Roll through Austria, defeat Prussia, take the land bridge to Sweden, and soon you're ...

RE: My Observations and Recommendations

Strongly agree.

1) Province control -- this (and protectorates) needs to be fixed.

2) Disbanding units -- should be able to disband any unit (except leaders)

3) I really like your POW ideas

RE: Labor Allocation

depends on what you want to build! I find I always have less labor than I want, so I allocate a lot of labor in provinces that can produce it (and zero in small provinces that don't seem to produce it). I think the rules say that labor is related to population size and number of factories.

the rulebook can tell you more, but it's number of people / capacity of province. You use up when you recruit soldiers.

<t> I disagree. The game can move slowly enough as it is.<br/>
<br/>
Of course, it would be nice to have a map of the world, like Europa Universalis (and like World in Flames will have), but that could really slow the game down. <br/>

RE: Quick combat screens

Perhaps this is impossible, but in any game I'd like an option to view the calculations behind the combat, like in Neverwinter Nights, where you can check out the numbers if you feel the result is unfair or incomprehensible.

RE: The Right way to play a quick battle

One thing I've noticed is that artillery is far more vulnerable in a quick battle than in detailed. Also, some special abilities are better than others. I find heavy cav particularly powerful. Oddly, irregular cavalry also seems powerful (but maybe that's only at lower difficulty levels).

RE: how historical?

Focus isn't on history, but on exploring alternatives. Some of the mod suggestions to the developers concern making the game more historical. I like the ahistorical nature of the game (as France, taking Sardinia from Corsica, as Britain, acquiring all of Italy).
