German FO Battalions?

<t> This was probably a different approach to the same end. X number of German maneuver companies in a German division; therefore X number of FO elements grouped administratively at the Division Artillery HQ, but still individuals farmed out to the maneuver elements at each level. The end result ...

ARTY FOs

<t> Correct Mr. RR, absolutely without malice! Just observations.<br/>
<br/>
Do not confuse "FO battalions" (sic)" with FA Target Acquisition Battalions, of which there were more than a few. But that is a whole different chapter, and a totally different course at Ft. Sill! <br/>

RE: How a tactical miniatures wargame does it

<r> In the first place, there was never such a thing as an FO "unit". Only DIRECT SUPPORT artillery units had organic FO's assigned and each FO was a Field Artillery LT or NCO, an <U><s></s>individual<e></e></U> soldier supported usually by an RTO who often doubled as a driver when one was ...

RE: Artillery Spotting

<t> Thank you Mr. Roadrunner, for attempting to inject a bit of sanity into what has been, by and large, an exercise in insanity! With the few exceptions of those who have quite aptly explained the capabilities and limitations of the artillery of different nations, much of what has been said is ...

RE: Artillery Spotting

<r> TRUE!<br/>
<br/>
That's why we have artillery Fire Planning, and more specifically "ON-ORDER MISSIONS" previously planned and identified in operation orders. These would normally be implemented by the Artillery Fire Support Coodinator (an FA CPT at each maneuver battallion; the DIRECT SUPPORT ...

Most informative. A Commonwealth Field Artillery Offisers Advanced Course in a nutshell! St Barbara would be very proud!

RE: Artillery Spotting

<t> KEY POINTS:<br/>
<br/>
1. SOVIETS <br/>
<br/>
-- High emphasis on preplanned fires-- on a massive scale.<br/>
-- very strong capability to mass fires -- absolutely essential.<br/>
-- rolling barrages ---- very desirable.<br/>
-- forget about FOs and observed fire.<br/>

2. US<br ...

Thank you for this reference. It accurately represents many aspect of artillery. The Fire and Fury rules Game apparently makes a real effort to simulate artillery, and could serve as an initial model for looking at improvements to the JTCS artillery simulation. Come up with ...

RE: Artillery Spotting

<r> Before you make such a radical change, even on the optional level, it would behoove the Designer to read up on and learn some details about American, and Soviet, Field Artillery doctrines, which are totally different. Many of the statements made in the correspondence concerning this subject are ...

The 8" M1 (later M115) had a total traverse of 60 degrees. As an advisor to a Kansas National Guard 8" towed unit during 1968 summer training, I was amazed at the high degree of skill with which the National Guard Artillerymen handled these huge mountains of steel. My ...

RE: Artillery

coluntblue: It would require a well trained gun crew with the "pig" (8" towed), But 5 minutes including time of flight to relay the piece and get steel on the target does not seem unrealistic to me. Any comments from any 8" towed guys out there?

<r> A well trained Field Artillery Battalion Fire Direction Center, be it 105 towed or 155SP, can redirect fires from any of its Batteries to any target anywhere on the map within firing range in well less than 60 seconds, using manual chart and graphical or tabular tables developed during WWII . If ...
