Okay, I'm new at Close Combat so bear with me. Is there any way to pause the game once it has started?

Where can I find a description of the scenario or operation or campaign? I see the name of each one but there is no description that says what the background or objectives are for any given choice. Am I missing something? Does it show up somewhere after you pick an item?
