What i do is manual transfer the fighters as close as possible to the front, and leave everything else at the range limit.

And as Bamilus says, yeah, you can lose 2 weeks bomber production in an attack if you GS without escorts.

Right now you absolutely trashed the SOV manpower reserves.
Don't have your save open, but i think Axis had 600k stored, and the soviets like 80k, with 15k per turn?

So very much true, doing it full manual, and the orders aren't more then 2 minutes after then first turn.
And i just love how easy it is to ctrl drag to move all the air groups at once.

Hotkey X tells you to stop air support while you move those units, then you can turn it on again on the same hotkey
