RE: Cool Military Drill video

Our drill team at the USMMA used to routinely toss bayoneted M-1's over one guy, two is impressive.

RE: Relative Lack of Vietnam Era Games

John Tiller's Squad Battles series of tactical games includes 2 Vietnam titles: "Vietnam" and "Tour of Duty". I have not played these, and am not that experienced with the Squad Battles series, but JT generally puts out a good game.

RE: OT ship in distress

<t> I'm not saying that the guests were not discomfited. However, they were reimbursed for their cruise, given credit towards a future cruise, plus $500. While that may seem like a PR disaster, and I know that the usual amount is 100% on a future cruise, by contract Carnival didn't have to give them ...

Yes, you should start to see more articles about passengers describing awful, but not life threatening conditions. An interesting read is on People.com from a passenger, who spoke of guests hording food causing shortages. It sounded sort of like the Lord of the Flies ...

RE: OT ship in distress

<t> Oh no! Since the advent of cell phone cameras, cruise ships have very large targets on them. Virtually nothing goes over the side. Paper and cardboard trash is incinerated onboard, all metal, glass, and plastic is compacted and landed. Incinerator ash is bagged and landed. All waste water, from ...

The dive problem of the early P-38's was that they actually dived too well. If you tipped one over at high speed and altitude, you actually went supersonic (I believe I read where this was the first plane to do so, and why it took quite a while to figure out what was ...

<t> While I don't disagree with Bullwinkle about the high loss rate in the sub service, remember that they were in the Navy, while every single merchant mariner lost was a civilian, including those who chose to make the Murmansk or Malta runs several times, and many who were torpedoed more than once ...

RE: Octane rating

<t> Been following this for a couple of days. Funny how people think that higher octane equates to higher energy. Octane is a measure of ignition delay. The higher the octane, the longer the fuel takes to ignite. Gasoline, whether produced in the 40's or now, has a fairly small range of "specific ...

<t> CT: Absolutely. African mahogany was extremely widely used during the early 20th century, and was inexpensive. Its durability and workability was perfect for the PT boat and the DeHavilland Mosquito (forms for the balsa/birch skin). The large size of the trees allowed for large sheets to be cut ...

RE: B-17 supremacy

<t> I don't know, with 160 bombs dropped randomly over the entire 5 sq km port, that's one bomb every 30,000 sq mtrs (300 x 100 rectangle). A CV or BB would fill a minimum 200 x 30 mtr area, this gives about a 1 in 4 chance of hitting the ship for every rectangle. Not bad odds, and the bombers would ...

<t> Interesting read from the court. As I've stated in previous post, the ship is most likely a "two compartment ship", so that if 5 compartments were flooding, there was never any hope of saving her. If the damage control reports correctly stated this, and the engine rooms are monitored by video ...
