RE: 2 years and counting - First time Grand Campaign

<t> I'm not sure if the 8 hex strike is mentioned in the rulebook. I've learned about it through reading AARs where it happened and the resulting discussions. I think there was one AAR (PzB vs Andy Mac, perhaps?) where the Japanese successfully pulled off the 8 hex strike multiple times to ...

Is this true even in '45? I'm rocking the late model HellDiver, TBFs, Corsairs and F5f-3 Hellcats. All of them have a normal operating range that is 8 or under?

RE: 2 years and counting - First time Grand Campaign

You said the KB was 8 hexes away? I'm pretty sure that while the Japanese can launch carrier strikes from 8 hexes, the Allies' maximum strike range is 7. It seems you fell victim to the dreaded "8 hex strike", which is what most Japanese players aim to achieve whenever possible.

The game won't begin right away. It'll probably be a week or two until it kicks off. In the meantime I'd love any comments about the idea of playing with PDU-off on the Allied side or any other tips you can throw this rookie as I get going.

RE: Battle for Korea

Have you played Enemy Unknown's expansion? If not, I recommend it. If you have, you could always try a second playthrough with some of the "second wave" options.

Also, perhaps one of the Paradox Interactive games (Crusader Kings, Europa Universalis, Victoria, Hearts of Iron).

RE: Battle for Okinawa!

<t> Perhaps someone needs to mod a version of Scenario 1/2 that would make PDU off a viable choice for the Japanese player by slightly improving the air group upgrade paths. Something that's in between PDU off's "50% Nates" and PDU on's "75% Franks with a few Tojos and Oscars sprinkled in for ...

<t> Joc, are your troops in China prepping for any important targets? If not, maybe you should prep some of them for Hokkaido while going ahead with the Formosa op. That way you could still campaign for two months in China, and then decide whether or not to pull them back and use them on Hokkaido ...

RE: Battle for Bangkok begins!

I assume that they would arrive directly on the ship so long as it's afloat. Is it possible to fly off aircraft if the ship is overloaded? The new groups will arrive at the end of the turn, so the carriers would be able to conduct operations during the combat phases.

<t> Joc, I wouldn't rush to kill off the superstack. It might be crippled, but I don't think it will die easily. Aren't units that are surrounded in defensive terrain sometimes quite hard to kill? I'm pretty sure I've seen AARs with Chinese units surrounded in forests that just refuse to die ...

RE: Allies land on Luzon!!

<t> That's odd that your USAAF base forces don't get aviation support upgrades. I checked my Scenario 1 and looked at a couple USAAF BFs and they had the early 1945 upgrade from 60 to 90 av support. RE: Allies land on Luzon!!

Don't many of the base forces resize their TOE in 1945, giving more aviation support for the USAAF base forces naval support for the USN base forces? Or are the ones that arrive in 1945 just bigger?

RE: Balikpapan

<t> Look on the bright side Joc, as the Allies you don't desperately need Balikpapan's fuel, and more importantly, you can afford to dump several hundred thousands of supply there to repair it. While it won't be fully repaired until almost the end of the game, it should be producing a decent amount ...

RE: Allies resumes the offensive!

I'd go for the deliberate attack on Pegu. The defensive bonus might be a little better than the forest terrain, but a failed deliberate attack is a lot less risky. Bad rolls on a shock attack across a river into defensive terrain...that could set you back for a long time.
