Colonial possessions: another refrain of the old tune

Hi all,

Apologies for banging on again on this subject, but I'm more convinced than ever that the way possessions are being handled in the game isn't right.

In my current campaign, as Germany yet again, I hammered the French between 1892 and 1897 and, much against my better judgement, took Corsica ...

Re: Is the Trade War a little skewed?

In my current game, I've lost more than 1500 aux. The next highest loss level is UK with around 80.

Nothing bad has happened so far (1927), and I've not had unrest above 3. Even if you're blockaded, the public eats up major victories and things have to get really, really bad before you get stood ...

No response to this one in two months...oh well, I suppose the workaround is a really good set of reading glasses.

Re: When should you rebuild and how contract foreign construction

Just reviewing this thread after a long time. A word on 'mean cruisers'.

What I've been building for a while now in the early game, is large CAs (12k tons+) with 4x11" or 12" AND 8x8" secondaries in casemates. These things pack the punch of a B AND a CA and will usually utterly outclass anything ...

Fleet exercises: any use?

Can anyone tell me what is the benefit of fleet exercises, and whether they're worth bothering with.

I've never run one, due mainly to not being able to afford it because politicians. Should I try harder?

Re: How to read contact reports?

I think the sighting and contact reports need work. See my previous post for some suggestions.

Re: Is the Trade War a little skewed?

To take a contrarian view, I wouldn't even worry about it. I usually lose hundreds of aux and nothing much seems to happen except for grumbling on the home front every now and then and the occasional fuel shortage. If you're not actually blockaded--and only surface units can do this--it doesn't seem ...

Seems to me they have spotted you but you haven't spotted them.

It happens sometimes, e.g. Savo Island.

Re: Political Interference

Also, bit of a gotcha with putting ships into reserve or MB so you can afford new boats, refits whatever. Yes it's great for freeing up budget, and the AI uses it extensively.

BUT: there is a booby trap here in that when you mobilise, you may find you now have a fleet that you now can't afford for ...

Re: Political Interference

You can't always scrap them immediately without getting complaints and a prestige hit from the politicians.

What I've had to do a couple of times is commence the cruisers or whatever, continue construction of however many I want/can afford (usually no more than two or three of the set), halt the ...

Re: Modding events

OK lets give this another nudge. I had a closer look at events.dat and while it's reasonably obvious how some of these values work, it would be really nice to know exactly how it ALL works.

Hellfirejet has nutted out some but not all the relevant values to make his events mod.

Can we PLEASE have ...

Modding events

While events.dat is readable, is there a guide somewhere for how to interpret and change the fields?

Even column headers would be nice...but also, it's clear that some events cascade into others. It's not clear by inspection how this works, or where the event responses come from for that matter.

I ...

Re: 1.0.84: Granting independence is all backwards

Another case in point. In my current game, the Marshall Islands rebelled (1940s) and I simply ignored it. I don't want them; they're no earthly use and just jack up my FS load, while potentially leading to confrontations in the Pacific that do not interest me for any number of reasons.

The base is ...

Re: Ships in Service window changing column widths

Problem seen here too, with all versions.

Seems to relate to either scaling or multiple screens or both. Went away after I turned off one of my monitors and set scaling to 100% on the other one.

Re: 1.0.84: Granting independence is all backwards

Let me add that while I am well aware that RTW is not a historical simulation, in its technical aspects a great deal of trouble has been taken to model realistic mechanisms and technology.

Why not apply the same approach to the political and diplomatic aspects?

Re: 1.0.84: Granting independence is all backwards

This is probably the point.

The powers learned by experience the hard way (though the French were a little slower on the uptake, la Gloire and all that). Britain gave up the empire because it couldn't afford the alternative, Churchill having hocked everything to beat Hitler. France only after ...

Re: 1.0.84: Granting independence is all backwards

Just had more thoughts about this.

Colony value is the obvious thing to take into account when calculating the P and T effects of independence--but so should base size.

Thus, an otherwise insignificant island in the middle of nowhere can have a much larger weight if a lot of resources have been ...

1.0.84: Granting independence is all backwards

Harking back to a topic I've raised before unfortunately...

I'm more than ever convinced that the decolonialisation which starts to happen in the 40s is all wrong. I've had the Irish independence event, for example, and it's +1 prestige to let them go in peace and -1 to hang on to it.

This in my ...
