RE: Incentive for Soviet to stay/fight and not run in 1.0801??

<t> In my experience that Soviet tactic can be effective, and can also be beaten by an Axis player with a good grasp of logistics who can keep the Stavka guessing about what's coming next. There have been lots of games where Rostov and Vorenezh have fallen in 41 or armies have been pocketed trying ...

RE: Soviet Wave Attacks

<t> Interesting. My experience has been that air attacks fall off greatly in effect depending on the fortification level of the hex attacked, and as they're first mission only, I tend to save the planes for unfortified targets. On the other hand, wearing down attacks with a brigade or weak division ...

RE: Soviet Wave Attacks

<t> As the attacker in that scenario, I was using (historically accurate) wearing down attacks to ... wear down the Germans. Going by the indicative CV values, I was well short of 1:1 if I'd attacked straight away, and I wouldn't have been able to reorganise 2nd Shock for a successful second echelon ...

RE: A unit production

<t> Rmonical had to keep closing the pocket and pushing it further south, so he had to keep every panzer division on the front line for month after month, so the main objective of the Soviets was to reopen the pocket by attacking panzer divisions. They were also isolated a lot of the time - as in ...

RE: A unit production

<r> Just to give the view from the Soviet side ... This is turn 66, at the end of the Soviet go. Apart from the tactical complexity of the position, it shows just how disorganised the Red Army was at the climax of the struggle.<br/>

RE: Another Blizzard Smackdown - Hoooper welcome

Some problem with tanks, perhaps? I have a manpower pool getting on for 700,000 and I can't seem to get them into units. I'm sure the Red Army doesn't require a college degree for infantrymen

RE: Another Blizzard Smackdown - Hoooper welcome

<t> Ah, I've just come across this, after talking to a friend in Bolivia. The Crimea was a disaster for me - I was much too aggressive. Also, rmonical played a very careful blizzard - all I could do was snap at his heels. The German's 42 offensive was brilliant, though. My opponent was very ...

Stacking

<t> One aspect of this game that has puzzled me for years, but not enough to do anything about it, is how the order of stacking is decided. This is important in lots of contexts - for deception, for not forgetting where your artillery counters are, for keeping track of HQs and, most importantly, for ...

RE: Towards the edge of destruction: hooooper v Blubel

What the effect of this decision will be is hard to say. It's clear now that the Germans have failed to land a knock-out blow, but it's also clear that they still have the initiative.

RE: Towards the edge of destruction: hooooper v Blubel

<r> Once the Germans have revealed their intentions for the summer, the Soviet player is faced with an interesting dilemma: should they go onto the defensive, moving reserves from quiet sectors to keep laying a carpet in front of the Germans, hoping that the panzers can be reduced to below the 1.5k ...

RE: Towards the edge of destruction: hooooper v Blubel

<r> The other main effort was expended in the infantry offensive north of Tula (which I continue to find a bit odd), and the isolation of a good part of the Vorenezh Front, which I have no difficulty in understanding.<br/>

During the mud turns, the enormous influx of Soviet reserves was able to punch a second hole through the wafer thin German encirclement and isolate a Panzer division and a half. Because the Germans were operating in a one-hex-wide corridor with ...
