Seeking Netplay opponent

<t> Logging on here for the first time in years, keen to give Netplay a try now it's apparently working properly. Medium-to-high level of experience, maybe a bit rusty but wouldn't take me long to get on top of everything again. Just as happy to play Barbarossa or Global War. Flexible with time ...

RE: Opponent Wanted

Still looking for an opponent? Logging in here for the first time in years, enthusiastic to play now I see Netplay is more or less working. Medium-to-good experience level. Flexible with time. Located in Australia.

RE: I give up...again

<r> <QUOTE><s>
</s>that's interesting to me because once you know all the fine points of operating World in Flames armed forces, the Japanese can really build a big Co-Prosperity Sphere if the Germans are doing well in Russia and the Allied focus has to be on that. The Japanese can overrun ...

Suggestion to WiF/ADG/MG: Change the name "shore bombardment modifier" to "sea-box land action penalty".

RE: I give up...again

<r> <QUOTE><s>
</s>That part makes sense, but if I'm reading that penalty correctly, you get penalized for having more naval arty support--no matter how poorly planned an invasion is, seems like having more arty would be a good thing (assuming you avoid friendly fire of course).<e>
</e ...

Yes, good decision. Though of course, we old hands will be saying "disrupted" till the end of our days!

RE: Dumb questions thread

<r> I find the Word document rules for the board game which you can download from the ADG site to be easier to work with than the PDF that comes with the computer game, notwithstanding that there are a few minor differences (e.g. face-down units are indeed "disrupted" rather than "disorganized").<br ...

RE: Dumb questions thread

<t> The short answer to your question is that you should be searching for DISORGANIZED rather than DISRUPTED. As far as I'm concerned though, the term is "disrupted". Disrupted land units can't move and can't attack. With 1d10 combat, the attacker gets a +1 bonus on the roll for *each* disrupted ...

RE: Let's Talk Optional Rules

I don't like pilots, for precisely the reasons you say, and I've been searching in vain for another player who shares this opinion. Oil though is indispensable as far as I'm concerned, as it introduces a strategic dimension that makes the game immensely more realistic.

RE: Oil

<t> Various hexes around the map (which are where you would expect them to be) have one or more oil resources, which yield an oil point each turn. These oil points can be saved, which is when "oil counters" appear. Usually though you just use them at the source, so to speak. Using an HQ to ...

RE: On the fence

<r> World in Flames is the only wargame I have <I><s></s>ever<e></e></I> seriously gotten into, unless you count Diplomacy. I dabbled with a few Avalon Hill games and a couple of Matrix titles like Battles in Normandy, and while they were perfectly fine in their way, I found nothing in them ...

I now see that the map has 5th Edition at the top left, but there are no other changes from the first edition map that I can see.

RE: Does anyone have the map and counters to cardboard WiF 1.0?

I believe that's the 1.0 map, but the counters are from later. The 1.0 counters are lower resolution, and all the HQs and naval units are all generic.

RE: Does anyone have the map and counters to cardboard WiF 1.0?

<t> I bought my copy of WiF 1.0 as a teenage D&D geek in the mid-1980s who was dilettantishly exploring other areas of the gaming world. I'm Australian, and there was obviously a lot of buzz surrounding WiF in local gamerdom at the time. My interest in gaming faded after I finished high school ...

RE: Does anyone have the map and counters to cardboard WiF 1.0?

Ah yes, that's right. At what point in the game's evolution did rail lines appear? Before that there was "strategic movement", which IIRC meant you could move any distance from one city to another on the same land mass.

<r> Here's a little pic showing some of the Asian map (don't seem to be able to find the European), the rule book and a smattering of CW and (I think) Soviet counters.<br/>

Oh yeah, eight major powers. Seven's Diplomacy. Hey, speaking of WW1 games, perhaps Matrix could knock up a Fatal Alliances add-on, if it found a bit of free time.

RE: 250 Countries?

<t> Assuming we're talking the Global War scenario here, I guess you'd say optimum is one player for each of the seven major powers. Personally though, I've only played two-player games, with one side the Axis and the other Allies, and invariably had a great time doing so. Maybe the best idea would ...
