RE: OTH Radar Detection OODA time is too short

<t> Okay, got a really good chapter 1 in the OTH bible. It's the only reference I could find that covers scan rates in any detail. I'm a microwave radar engineer, so OTH requires a bit of bridging of my knowledge. If someone more knowledgeable shows up and can comment, please do!<br/>

RE: OTH Radar Detection OODA time is too short

<t> Been on vacation so just coming back to this.<br/>
<br/>
I know someone at work who has the OTH bible. I will get a look at the scan rate math (assuming it might be different than for phased arrays) and get back to you.<br/>

Thanks for clarifying that the detection OODA is different ...

RE: OTH Radar Detection OODA time is too short

<t> Yeah, I checked some of the other radars and noticed that too. I know it would take an awful lot of work to do that for every/most radars, so I didn't want to spook the devs [:D] For many radars, 15 seconds is not a bad average frame time, since you can assume missed detections (usually due to ...

[UPDATED DB v445] OTH Radar Detection OODA time is too short

<r> Looking at the Chinese OTH radars (OTH-B and OTH-SW), I noticed that the OODA detect time is only 15 seconds. Based on my own limited experience with these systems, and cross-checking with an NPS paper (<URL url="http://www.dtic.mil/dtic/tr/fulltext/u2/a474069.pdf">http://www.dtic.mil/dtic/tr ...

RE: Ever wonder how large should your search area be?

<t> The more it can be sourced to openly available works, the easier it is. @Rudd, that is part of what I am doing by going through the book and interpreting it for those who don't have it or don't have the background to understand it directly. Once the equations and algorithms are described on the ...

Got it. Thanks SeaQueen!

BTW, where did you pick this stuff up? And what else do you use spreadsheets for while playing?

RE: Ever wonder how large should your search area be?

<t> @SeaQueen, I've had a nagging suspicion about that statement of mine.<br/>
<br/>
Submarines usually operate in exclusive OPAREAs for safety reasons, so it is generally safe to assume that there is only one in *their* box. If my box overlaps two or more of their boxes, then there could be ...

RE: Ever wonder how large should your search area be?

<t> @magi, I think you can use the equations offline with a simple calculator. Consider the following problem:<br/>
<br/>
I need to establish a carrier operating area. In order to do that, I need to clear the area of enemy submarines. The carrier will arrive in 12 hours, so I have that much time ...

RE: Ever wonder how large should your search area be?

<t> I'm happy to report that the Koopman reference is the most widely used source cited by the OA book, covering chapters 5-8 and 10. I'm still digging into those for items that are of practical use to players of CMANO (such as optimal placement of the screen). I'm looking at Washburn's page on the ...

Ever wonder how large should your search area be?

<t> I finally found and wanted to share from an authoritative source that tied search area, time, searcher speed, detection area, target speed, and cumulative probability of detection. That book is Naval Operational Analysis (2nd ed.) from the Naval Institute Press.<br/>

RE: Is Multipath modeled in sensors?

I am seeing the AOU. In my previous scenario, I had two OTH's with some separation, so the target was resolving more accurately. I really need to re-check before I post.

RE: Is Multipath modeled in sensors?

<t> I usually see multipath as the phenomenon that causes the target detections to fade in and out over long ranges at low grazing angles, causing "initial firm track" to be significantly different from "continuous firm track". This definitely affects engagements, as you cannot shoot at what you ...

RE: Is Multipath modeled in sensors?

<t> I want to examine a little more detail here. When I set up a generic scenario with an Over-the-Horizon radar, and look at each Side's view, there seems to be a lot of position accuracy at long range (if I read the absence of an AOU box as positional accuracy). In fact, the range and azimuth ...

RE: Is Multipath modeled in sensors?

A similar question has to do with sensor resolution and accuracy: is the Target Location Error modeled sufficiently to prevent high precision weapons from being fired using low precision data? I know about the "pessimistic/optimistic" setting, which would seem to be aimed at the TLE problem.

Is Multipath modeled in sensors?

<t> Being a radar guy, I am painfully aware of the problems that multipath causes to detections and especially to firm track range. Is this modeled in any way in CMANO?<br/>
<br/>
I seem to recall reading that you use the radar range equation to estimate detectability. Multipath is simply the F^4 ...

Freezes during tutorial after activation of No-Nav Zone

1) Deactivate mission BARCAP<br/>
2) Activate missions Strike Sa-*<br/>
3) Select reference points for bombing range and create a No-Nav zone.<br/>
