RE: On the fence

<t> Well, not knowing who's gonna shoot is half the fun of Squad Battles! SB is way more about command and control, and also a blast to play online. <br/>
<br/>
But yes, I think what is comes down to is that in ToTH and ASL, the majority of the game happens in movement/Defensive Fire. That's where ...

RE: Multiplayer and AI

The OP (me) is right at thirty, and I've been playing games like this for years. I could natter all day about Millennials in wargames, but that's a different thread.

RE: The AI on the Attack (and food for thought for players too)

Being able to focus fire on targets of your choice is also historical[;)].

Multiplayer and AI

<t> Like many of the people here, I'm really enjoying the game. However, I think that without multiplayer, the game will fall by the wayside, as there is just not enough here to justify returning game after game. It's basically playing a solo game of ASL starter kits, with the added benefit of some ...

RE: Ok, so how's the most important thing in the game?.....

<t> Having played a few of the mod scenarios (Tractor Works, GREAT STUFF!), it would seem that it is not so much that the AI isn't very good, but that it plays like a new ASL player. The AI simply won't press the attack if there is an enemy in cover close by. It will just stack up and try to break ...

RE: Ok, so how's the most important thing in the game?.....

<t> My two cents. Nothing to write home about, in my opinion. I suspect that the lack of multiplayer in a game that is an adaptation of a boardgame probably turned some people off (as it should have), and that necessitated the hype about the AI. While playing this, I've revisisted Squad Battles ...

RE: Scenario turn length.

Are you can ASL player? The turn length is pretty integral to the game, as it allows for more asymmetry in the battle. Took me forever to get used to it when I started playing ASL.

RE: The Guards Counterattack Ready to play

Played it, had a lot of fun!

I mobbed a German HS in the Center building with 2 full squads. Next thing I know, the bastards have killed all my guys and spawned a leader. Snake eyes.

RE: Thoughts on AI

<t> Even if AI is good, it's still acting on an algorithm. I would personally enjoy a way to hack into it and "Fix" a bad move by the computer when it obviously should do something else. Like, when there is an objectively obvious move that the PC should make. I do this all the time when playing ASL ...

RE: ASL 'like' map templates

So, are these maps made as TotH versions of ASL maps. As in, they'll work immediately upon dropping them in the game folder?

Command and Control questions

<t> Have I overlooked the thread that delves into the C2 aspects of this game? It appears that the C2 elements are the most significant departure from the the ASL inspiration.<br/>
<br/>
Is the C2 supposed to add another tactical layer to the game, or is it meant more to be a fresh way to modulate ...

RE: Anyone want to see the editor in action again tonight?

Same guy, eh? Neat! You basically taught me to play ASL.

I'd love to see some more of that editor in action, and wouldn't mind seeing how it affects this much-hyped AI that the game has.

I've loved your videos thus far, thanks for the hard work.

Battlefield conditions

<t> I was curious to know what this game might have in the way of "battlefield conditions", or what some might call "Heat of Battle" or "Murphy"<br/>
<br/>
In ASL, there were obviously the "Heat of Battle" tables, whereby things could happen that were interesting but outside the player's control ...

Seems like all the terrain takes up the whole hex? i.e., all the woods, grain, etc. will be the same?
