Re: A thank you to the Devs!

Reading military history and being able to simulate historical events in a wargame has an addictive effect that most cannot comprehend.

I am on the opposite of that spectrum: if I want to see the same as what happened in history, I go watch a movie or a YouTube video (there are some really good ...

Re: Proper use of HQs

I'm just starting to understand how to use HQs properly (auto-assist or manual mode). It seems like you need to decide which units they will support at the beginning of your turn, detach and attach as needed, and then proceed with your turn. Once a unit which is attached to an HQ has moved or ...

Re: General Tech

Do units with an elite general also get a special bonus for defending against attacks?

Nope. Attack only.

That seems strange.

Grant rallies his troops after being surprised at Shiloh. His presence obviously makes a huge difference on the defense.

Lee moves his army to Fredericksburg ...

Re: CSA research.

I consider Leadership part of the big 5. The HQs are very, very weak and each point helps A LOT, especially because you don't have many.

Yeah you could argue leadership and telegraph form the big 6. I actually think getting at least the first level of field telegraph is even more important ...

Re: CSA research.

You mostly want to focus on any tech that improves your infantry/leaders and economy. So besides the big four, I would recommend: field telegraph, leadership, infantry tactics, spying and intelligence, fort modernization

For naval heavy strategies, the naval techs can make a significant impact ...

Re: Marines

I didn't use marines at all (see https://www.matrixgames.com/forums/viewtopic.php?f=11908&t=385970)

But, yes, a good strategy would be to buy two ASAP together with cavalry, capture a port and run around with the cavalry, like Jazon posted.

This should not be possible IMHO (each city should have ...

Re: Balance in the 1861 Scenario

I'll be sticking with the AI game for now. There are just too many vacant cities and too few troops (militia??) especially in the west where its harder to send units. PBEM players will send cavalry troops ridiculously all over the map, just resigned a game where I had two cavalry chasing one north ...

How I won with a major Union Victory in July 1963.

Hi! I finished the Grey and Blue campaign as Union (on Intermediate) and wanted to share with you how I got a Union Major Victory in May 1864.

As reference, here is the link to my post for the Confederate Major Victory in July 1863

It's been like that forever, so I never questioned it, but I agree that that would make more sense.
The same for buying units, now that I think about it!

Re: Balance in the 1861 Scenario

One question I have is about research progress and how that might affect balance. In Q2 1862, I now have Infantry Equipment (IE) 2, Scouting 1 and Skirmishing 1. The CSA have IE and Scouting, might have the other but I just haven't seen a unit upgraded with all 3 yet.

It seems odd with IE to ...

Re: How I won with a major Confederate Victory in July 1963.

I am a big fan of the SC series. Bought all and played them all to death. But I'm missing someting in this game. No meaningful strategic choices to make. Diplomacy is largely pointless. No Turkey or Spain to bribe or invade. No North-Africa to prioritize or abandon. No Sealion to consider. No ...

Re: How I won with a major Confederate Victory in July 1963.

Invading Kentucky as the South and Indiana is doable as well as taking Ft Monroe but as the same time?

As explained, I took Ft Monroe with the four very first divisions I made, so that is before Kentucky.

You will have to rotate in a large group of Land Units to make this work and what about ...

Re: Balance in the 1861 Scenario

No one will play the confederates, very few people play MP wargames to see if they can hold off the opponent. Doesn't seem like many playing now won't improve.

With the confederates, I did much more than "holding off the opponent". I kicked them out of Virginia and invaded Maryland, Kentucky ...

Kentucky goes a certain percentages to Union every turn, by default.

Maybe the percentage shown is the sum of the default move towards Union plus the 20-30% from your diplomatic success?

To me, 500 MPP for a one-in-four chance at flipping a state as valuable as KY is not a bad trade to make. But it depends on how willing you are to take the risk

To me, this is the kind of things that I dislike: if you're lucky, you win, if you're unlucky, you lose. I prefer games to rely on ...

Is it even possible to persuade Kentucky to join when playing as the Confederates? Because I bought five chits for diplomacy in Kentucky before buying anything else (before any troop or research), but Kentucky went Union anyway.

Should I even bother with Kentucky?

I never saw it lose more than 1 level of fortification in a single battle.
Did you put 3 pioneers in each unit or so?
