Any idea about Research? Does everyone just finish whatever upgrades the scenario starts with and then no one ever gets any more?

Kind of glad to see my scenarios will live on. However, given that in the old days a small patch (of AI, supply, combat, etc.) would break the AI and balance, it's hard to imagine that moving to a new TOAW system will do the scenarios any favors. Not sure how much fun ...

Does anyone know how the game behaves if you play without research and/or diplomacy? Do upgrades and war entry etc. happen on some sort of schedule or do they just never happen?
