curious about my scenarios

Post by tklemme23 »

Hello,

Oh so long ago, I designed a bunch of scenarios for TOAW that were included in the official release.

Balkans 1912
Balkans 1913
Serbia-Galicia 1914
Tannenberg 1914
France 1914
Marne 1914
Mons 1914
Eastern Front 1915
Brusilov 1916
Operation Compass 1941
Balkans 1941

And others. Not sure how many were included in the official release.

I don't have the time (or interest, really) in updating the scenarios, not that anyone has requested I do so. My primary frustration with TOAW design was that the scenario balance and AI were essentially ruined after almost every patch, and there were a lot of patches. Keeping the scenarios updated and balanced was more work than creating them.

Anyway, what I wanted to know is, will these scenarios be included in the new version (I saw some of them in the scenario list on the video stream) and will they be updated?

I certainly hope they are included. I have played most of those scenarios over the years and would love to give them another go.

Hello, Todd!
Great hearing from you. Those are great scenarios. I spent many educational hours with the Balkans and WWI scenarios. I think I can categorically say they will be including in the Classic Folder of TOAW IV. Several dedicated members of the development team have been vetting the Classics for compatibility with the new system, and it looks like these will be in the GO category.
This means that they have been evaluated for graphics, lockups, etc, but not for play balance or historic accuracy. I can say that in general the game results in TOAW IV track the results in the final version of TOAW III.

I do not think your scenarios will be updated for the official release but with your approval, I will wager they will be looked at and tweaked. With appropriate acknowledgment to authorship, of course.

My 1914 Guns of August credits Barbara Tuckman, Avalon Hill 1914, you, and Tom Porto's Home Before the Leaves Fall.

Please keep in touch.

Mons 1914

As Entente (British) player against German PO. As Entente player I have the first turn. After I had moved my units in a defense line and I end my turn the game was over. I had won the game.

I have try the game in hotseat. After turn 1 the Entente had won again.

I think that the problem is that every objectives from start are all Entente

Todd,
This was just posted yesterday in the Development Forum... I hope this gives you an idea of the activity of our dedicated members.

Hi Rob,

Kind of glad to see my scenarios will live on. However, given that in the old days a small patch (of AI, supply, combat, etc.) would break the AI and balance, it's hard to imagine that moving to a new TOAW system will do the scenarios any favors. Not sure how much fun they'll be for people to play.

Just wanted to say, that Brusilov '16 was one of the very few scenarios, which I did not win against die PO. :) My Central Powers run out of time... I really hope, there will be lots of WW1-scenarios :)

What great scenarios indeed! I am especially fond of the Balkan War ones, Eastern Front 15, and Brusilov.

As HPT Kunz has said our testing shows these hold up very well in TOAWIV, so we intend to include them.

By the way, even if you do not want to return to scenario design, your feedback on TOAWIV would be very welcome. If you would like to take a look, please sign up on the beta test page:

Might we get a peek at the tentative list of scenarios intended to be included in the release?

This has not been finalised yet. The only source of issue we have so far found with TOAW3 scenarios was unintended naval consequences due to the new naval rules in a few of them, but the guys have been able to quite easily remedy these so far. So, no promises just yet, but almost everything we had in TOAW3 should successfully make it over to IV. And we will have a number of brand new scenarios as well, of course, but the list has not been decided for those.
