RE: More feedback on 1.05

<t> In China you do need to upgrade infantry warfare and infantry weapons as fast as you can, but since you cannot double chit, there's a limit to how fast that is. Defending Nanning successfully requires that you bring down an HQ to support the defense and that you allocate most of your early ...

RE: More feedback on 1.05

<t> I find 1.05 much easier to win as the Allies against AI. In 1.04 I could occasionally squeak out an Allied win; in 1.05, it's not hard at all. My advice (against Intermediate AI).<br/>
1. Go all in on the defence of France. With a couple of air defense units and a couple of armies beyond the ...

RE: Island-hopping: what am I doing wrong? And other frustrations.

Also, be sure you are using special forces for the invasion. Regular units will lose supply after the landing and will be virtually useless, whereas SF will lose supply at the rate of only one step per turn.

RE: Suggestion instead of mobility

<t> Agree that a mobility upgrade is realistic. It's surprising how much even of the German army relied on horses for transport, so trucks for the infantry is a reasonable upgrade. For the armored units, I don't think it's so much building faster tanks, as making sure that the supply columns are ...

RE: Play testing the newest patch.

<t> I think the 1.05 patch is a big improvement. I'm not very experienced; I play SP at the novice level. I think the patch has balanced the game; earlier versions were quite tough to win as the Allies. My first game as the Allies in 1.05 was more balanced and more interesting.<br/>

RE: AI observations

<t> One more issue with Italian AI. It's easy to get the Italians to send out their fleet while France is still unconquered. If the Allies have moved the whole French fleet to the Med, along with 2-3 British ships (DD,CA,and BB or CC), then it's easy to wipe out the Italian fleet with the French ...

Crossword puzzles, cooking dinner, translating Horace's Satires, reading Susskind's "the Theoretical Minimum: Quantum Mechanics." And that's just this month.

RE: Russians too weak in game version

Make sure you research Infantry Weapons 2 quickly so that you can upgrade your units before the German invasion. Also make sure (through the convoy map) that you are sending the maximum amount of MPPs from the Western Allies to Russia.

RE: Isolated units and supply

<t> Thanks, Hubert for the detailed reply. It's clear enough how supply works in encirclements. Still, I think they are less effective in the game than in real life. Even apart from the difficulty of providing fuel and ammunition from an isolated city, there just seems to have been a major morale ...

RE: Bug with United States MPP's???

To move air units long distances, push the same button you use to move land units by rail. It costs you some MPPs but you can then move them as far as you want, from one theater to another.

RE: Isolated units and supply

<t> I just looked up the Battle of Kiev, the giant encirclement in the Fall of 1941. It only took 10 days from the time the encirclement was complete until the Soviet forces surrendered, almost half a million strong. Perhaps food stores could be drawn from an isolated city for a time, but I think ...

RE: Isolated units and supply

I agree with you. Because of that aspect of supply, big encirclements don't accomplish very much; there's too much risk and too little reward for them. So, as you say, you end up just grinding down the Russians by frontal assault.

RE: AI Allied invasion too early

<t> The way to beat Overlord, I think, is to build a lot of garrisons and give them the anti-aircraft improvement. Use them to blanket the coast, except the actual ports. Use corps to protect the ports and keep an army or two and a panzer nearby. If the landing force cannot get a port on the ...

RE: More Soviet Events Please!

<t> This is a great game, but I think the Russian theater lacks the volatility that happened historically, and that was well captured in the old Avalon Hill board game Russian Campaign. SC WaW captures the general ebb and flow but damps things down, at least in my games. The initial German success ...

RE: Axis MP Strategy Guide

<t> Sure, this is amateur advice. I play against the AI at novice level. These are some things I've found to help me win as the Allies.<br/>
<br/>
1. Immediately put two research chits on to infantry weapons 2 for both Russia and China.<br/>
2. In China, hurry an army and a couple of corps to ...
