As Fruitgnome has suggested you can try to throttle the distances by limiting fuel but that only somewhat reduces exploring distant places. You will still find ships, though less, out well beyond their fuel range trying to boldly go where no one from your race has gone before.

Would deduce that you are running the game with a Microsoft product and that the game is programed in a Microsoft language.

As the game program utilizes more of the language, i.e. multi threading, there will usually follow increased memory leaks. Their language code and OS are not written tightly ...

As the AI seems to prioritize ordering of ships at ports rather than planets I tend to send the ships to be retired to colonies to be retired. That way the port continues to pump out production whilst the ships retire and techs may be gleaned.

Not positive on this but seems the algorithm for building does not sort by distance but rather by the shortest time for the ship to be completed.

You can always go to the order ships in construction tab. (far right tab) Order the ship(s) there. The Galaxy map will populate with flags at ...

Or at least not have production queued to be built there without one manually ordering it. Then it would be the players fault for forcing production there and taking the risk. It would also avoid having to manually order ships to build fleets to avoid the explosions that will most likely occur ...

The algorithm for base refuel for all appearances seems to be broken. This has been ongoing since version shipped, Aurora, xx, 1.1.4.4. Practically speaking do not have access to beta versions.

When looking at mining bases to add there is a button off to the left of each potential mine to add it to the queue for Construction ships on auto.

Some are active

Some are greyed out and tell you they are disabled and why

To add to my above post sometimes by zooming in a little closer on the base or planet whilst fleet is selected then more options will become available.
