I thought it was 200M, but you're right it's 500M on a single planet. I had multiple planets with Ackdarian in the end and the options only appeared once the population reached 500M on one planet.

Sorry if this has been answered somewhere, but I've looked everywhere I can think of and I've not been able to find it. What is the minimum population level of a species you need to be able to colonize a planet?

I agree, the grid in DW:U was really useful and I'm finding just having coordinates confusing.

I think I may have fixed my issue... I've played a couple of sessions with everything such as lens flare turned on and had no issues what so ever.

In 1.0.2.4 I'm still getting CTD with lens flare on and an increased zoom speed (it doesn't seem to happen when lens flare is set to zero and the zoom speed set to 1), no crash dump file is created but event viewer shows two "errors":

I'm glad it's working for you!

I have the music turned off, like I do in most games, so I don't know how much it effects zooming in and out, but maybe that makes a difference too?

I've been getting this issue too, including 3 CTDs in 1.0.2.1. I turned lens flare to zero and haven't had the problem since... fingers crossed, this has solved it.

Good point. I'm hoping the answer is that ships have a limited jump range and one end of a jump has to be in a system. Limiting ships to traveling between systems only would seem like a backwards step. Loved the rest of the stream though.
