<t>I'll vouch for that. Getting this back on topic, I ran a 2.1 game against the japanese computer, non historical. They never touched Pearl, but it's April 42 and the rest of the invasion is pretty much on schedule. The exception is Malaya; the units with dramatically upgraded experience have shut ...

<t>Let me see if I can boild down the difference here: Mogami wants to win by taking territory (PH), and Major Tom wants to win by killing US units. Now, that's a drastic simplification, but it gets to the core. I'm not sure that I agree with Mogami's point that a later attack into CentPac is ...

<t>In response to your post about paying for a finished Pacwar, there's a reason it's free. Matrix CAN'T charge for it without being sued to death by Mattel. Matrix can ONLY release "free patches" for Steel Panthers, Wir and PacWar. The reason the coders are busy with WiTP is that that's the first ...

<t>Other than the divisions, I think the issue is focus. The IJN is focusing all of its efforts on the central pacific area, and thereby ignoring the Solomons. It may be that when the 17th army comes in (sometime in late 42), then those forces will move in and occupy the solomons, but I can't be ...

<t>While the issue of hardware control may be accurate, I also know that one issue is the use of memeory extenders. A lot of DOS games used them, but Pacwar and WIR don't, and the Matrix team is making every effort to keep the updated games within the 640K base. If they do that, I think ME will run ...

I hate to sound negative, since you guys do great work, but please play the game through before you release it. WiR's entry date problems are very disappointing for an otherwise capable effort.

<t>I know a little bit about programming, so here are my two bits on the subject. Theoretically, what you want is possible for a Windows game. Shogun: Total War switches between a turn-based strategic game and a real-time tactical game. What you need is two executables; i.e. two programs for the ...

<t>Here's the procedure that I use, and it seems to work. Left click on an unoccupied square. Hit the Util button, then select "Add Unit" (I think that's the command). A window will appear with possible unit designations; select one. The unit will then pop up under the control of the nearest HQ ...

<t>I agree with Ed on this one. The Japs may not have a prayer in the long term (with the Essex class carriers rolling out), but it all depends on the victory conditions. Until mid to late 1943, the US is in no condition to overwhelm the Japanese; the numbers aren't there yet. If the Japanese have ...

There shouldn't be any difficulties. I run the original Pacwar and War in Russia on a WIN 98 machine with no problems. You don't even have to go into DOS modes; they just run in a (full-screen) DOS window

<t>On Major Tom's point, check out the stats for the Hiyo and Junyo. Their durability is less than half that of most fleet carriers. They're cheap conversions; they work fine until they have to go fast (max speed 25) or take hits. Me, I use them with the light carriers to add some dive bombers to ...

<t>I'll second some of Lithium's points. Fighter groups that attack task forces with no hope of doing damage need to be fixed. This is a constant feature, especially of allied fighter groups. They go up, get slaughtered by any fighter cover, and then they break off without a chance to do damage ...

On your point about the US making Brit planes, it's in the game now. Check out Eastern US. It's building Hudson patrol aircraft and Vengeance bombers from the start of the war.

If you're concerned with Win playability, don't be. You shouldn't need a boot disk. Pacwar and WIR run fine in a dos window under win 95 and 98. Trust me, I do it all the time. Since they don't use memory expanders, Windows can trick them into running in windows instead of DOS mode.

<t>Just a couple of points. 1, since surface combat TFs will bombard enemy facilities, I never create bombardment TFs. 2, if a TF was sent out with the express purpose of blasting a port as opposed to an airfield and troops, the ships would have sailed with AP as opposed to HE. One option would be ...

Following up with that thought, these guys are 1 for 1 on quality products (SPWaW). I'm willing to wait to make that stat 3 for 3. We've waited this long for somebody to do something with these old and flawed classics; we can wait another month or so if it comes to that.

<t>I'll second the comments above. Everyone on or lurking on this forum has paid for games which don't approach this level of potential. If Matrix is to be a long running concern, and I sincerely hope that they are, people need to pony up money to buy the games. Advertising revenue just doesn't work ...

Maybe, but the Japanese really never hunted merchant shipping. It was 'beneath them' or some other reason related to their honor. They hunted warships and scouted for high command. The problem with the float-plane subs is that they take so long to operate the planes and submerge again.

Features and Issues

<t>When I play strategy games, the biggest thing I notice is the AI. An intelligent, challenging AI can make a game great, and a poor AI makes it boring. Gary Grigsby's War in Russia had a lot of very interesting features, but the scale of the campaign put a lot of stress on the computing power of ...
