RE: Great read on COG at Wargamer...

The reviewer in question is almost exclusively a reviewer of strategy games and wargames, so he is certainly not unfamiliar with them. [:D]

<r> <QUOTE><s>
</s>Don't misunderstand me, I LOVE aspects of TW, CM, BG and HPS series and have played them BLIND. I just think you're proposing a standard for CoG that, if made normative, would basically leave you gameless and angry.<br/>

RE: Snowball effect

<t> Good looking game; but then I would think so, working on something of the same type.<br/>
<br/>
If I may make a suggestion, what you would want to model to prevent "snowballing" is the effect of French policy in Europe. Napoleon/France's advantage initially (to put it a bit simplistically) was ...

<r> <QUOTE><s>
</s>These could be easily modified in our engine since I've programmed for every weapon from stones to stealth and tactics from a Legion's wedge to Guderian's Blitzkrieg. RE: Tell us where to go after EiA...???

<r> <QUOTE><s>
</s>I would disagree. I think the overall top level concepts of area movement, provinces, leaders of corps, fleets of ships port over well.<e>
</e></QUOTE>
<br/>
Considering that the Corps was also a Napoleonic invention, I'd disagree. The kind of operational mobility ...

RE: Tell us where to go after EiA...???

<t> From a purely game mechanics perspective, I'd have thought the Seven Years War would be the obvious candidate for an Empires in Arms extension. I'd be surprised if there do not already exist player "mods" for the EIA boardgame for this period.<br/>

My suggestion if I were to go that ...

Stars!

<t>Rather off-topic, but just a brief comment. As you say, Stars! is a classic 4X game. Back when I first encountered it, I was fairly dismissive as well; but I think it actually has a lot going for it in the strategy department.<br/>

<t>Interesting to see a Boardgaming veteran like yourself on the project. Well it can be played very nicely by two players and it is not an incredibly complex game (the rules can be convoluted, but that's due to the writing style).

I'd go for it if your interest is in the Napoleonic Wars. IMO, this is destined to become a classic.

<t>While we wait for a PC game of the Napoleonic Wars, I would suggest that you guys take a look at the new boardgame from GMT Games - "Mark McLaughlin's The Napoleonic Wars".<br/>

The old Civil War game "No Greater Glory" game had a simmilar system with hidden leader skills. Was great fun - only problem was that the code was broken. :(
