Try running mech.exe in administrator mode. I haven't been through a battle with it yet, but quickly checking the arty screen worked fine.

I have this problem as well. I am running Vista, with version 8.2 of SP.
 
I hope Vista isn't the problem...

On the bottom of page 8 of the manual (v2.42), it states that UV can run in a window if in 1024x768x16 bit screen mode and if the command line parameter–w is used. Where do you change the command line parameter? I'm using Vista, I hope I can still do it..
