Re: WiF matching boardgame?

There is one major difference even if you can find and buy WiFFE (now superseded by the Collector's Edition - CWiF). The map in MWiF is European scale for the whole world. Originally you could buy the map pack here but you'd need an area about 27 feet long by 9 feet high to use it with ...

Re: U.S. in the Cricket T20 World Cup

The U.S. had another good win against Namibia but it wasn't enough to see them through to the Super 8s. Still, they had a very good tournament overall and will be much better for the experience.

Australia, the defending champions, have had an awful one and won't progress. There were some selection ...

Re: U.S. in the Cricket T20 World Cup

U.S.A. had a huge win against The Netherlands by 93 runs, keeping their hopes of progressing to the next round alive. The U.S. batted very well to make six for 196 (an excellent score) and then took regular wickets to peg back the opposition batting after a bright start. Once they got into the late ...

Re: U.S. in the Cricket T20 World Cup

In another upset, Australia have been defeated by Zimbabwe. I said above that I wasn't very impressed by our win against Ireland and a fired up Zimbabwe deserved to win. Australia didn't look switched on and a bit like they just had to turn up and it was all going to happen. Pathetic :roll ...

Re: U.S. in the Cricket T20 World Cup

In a big upset, Italy has thrashed Nepal by 10 wickets with 44 balls remaining. Nepal nearly beat England a few days ago and were heavy favourites but were restricted by excellent Italian bowling and fielding to 123 and then failed to take a wicket as the Mosca brothers belted their attack. It was ...

Re: U.S. in the Cricket T20 World Cup

South Africa and Afghanistan had a tie but South Africa finally won in the second super over in dramatic fashion. About 20 years ago someone told me that Afghanistan had a good cricket team and I was incredulous. What happened is that during the Soviet invasion and when the Taliban took over many ...

Re: U.S. in the Cricket T20 World Cup

Another creditable performance by the U.S. against Pakistan. They lost by 22 runs and really missed Ali Khan, who was out injured. Pakistan will be one of the teams to watch in this tournament as their batting is always strong and their spin bowlers will appreciate the subcontinental conditions.

In ...

Re: U.S. in the Cricket T20 World Cup

Well, that was an incredibly brave effort from the U.S. team and they really should have won, which would have been the biggest upset in cricket history. They had India in serious trouble in front of a stunned and basically silent Mumbai crowd, who'd rocked along to see India belt a minnow, but ...

Re: Where are you?

Wargaming is often a hobby for older people and, apart from people losing interest or going elsewhere, Old Father Time is going to cull some of those from 2007. Actually, although I was quite young then, I had a health scare where it looked like I might have had a brain tumour or Multiple Sclerosis ...

U.S. in the Cricket T20 World Cup

As probably most people here are from the U.S. I thought I'd tell you that you are in the T20 Cricket World Cup, which starts today and is being played in India and Sri Lanka.

For the uninitiated, T20 is an abbreviated form of cricket, where the games take about four hours and there is lots of ...

Re: How old are the average Wargamers here?

Mid 50s. I played chess with my father and brothers but we didn't really know how to play and it wasn't until I was about 19 that a friend who was a very good player taught me proper chess. My older brother, who was/is a huge Tolkien fan, came back from Perth (Western Australia) with a game almost ...

Updated update. I've returned from my Thai and European holiday. The Sinsheim Technical Museum is amazing.

The Mercedes Benz museum looks like a Bond Villain's lair and probably cost as much to build. If you're even remotely interested in cars and their ...

Re: I'mmmm Back

Speaking of the large maps, I had a vision, I had a large house with a wall i could mount the maps, the mission was to to mount a magnetic surface on the wall (steel, oh my), so I could magnitize the back of the counters,... would have been epic, although I never realized the vision, pity ...

Re: Free military aviation book downloads

The mighty Corsair. I love the inverted gull wing and the general look of the thing.

I've often wondered about that extended tail on the Corsair. Was that to house the arresting hook?

The Corsair does have a slightly unusual tail. Yes, the long taper would be to house the hook and also to ...

Combat Aircraft of WW2, by the legendary Bill Gunston. This is an excellent general resource. It's a bit hard to read the text but I was able to zoom slightly, which improved things.

The WW2 airpower series Clash of Wings. Walter Boyne, who was in the USAF, analyses The Second World War in the air. It's a good series. Here's a playlist of the entire thing.
