Oh, I hate that too. A hard grinding battle, one side finally breaks through, and just as you're about to finish them off . . .

DRAW

A bunch of players over at the blitzkrieg gaming site (which is devoted to pbem players) came up with a good spreadsheet that calculates flags and points slightly differently and gives less draws once results are punched in. Many players (myself included) use it over there for pbem and find its a better indicator of how the battle went.

Heres what the info says

SP SCORE SYSTEM

The new scoring system is designed to rid the game reports of the abundant draws that we have lived with for so many games. This new system is now based more on FLAG control, offset by the score. This will result in far fewer draws; as players will now be able to score a win by controlling the majority of flags, or by inflicting huge losses on their opponent. Indeed, a player who controls 100% of the flags but suffers 40% more losses than his opponent will find himself with only a minor win.

This system is simplicity in itself to use. To calculate a result:

1. Player 1 enters his score, and the number of flags he controls

2. Player 2 enters his score, and the number of flags he controls.

The game will automatically cross reference the entries and provide a result. Please note the following:

1. Point difference is based on the two players scores, taken in ratio. So a player who score only 200 points while his opponent score 400 has a -50% point ratio.

2. Neutral flags are not counted as each player controls 50% of the flag. So if there are 21 flags total, of which 5 are controlled by player 1, and 10 are controlled by player 2, then a result of 15 flags will be used to calculate the flag control ratio. So of 15 flags total, player 1 controls 35% of them, and player 2 controls 65%.

This will work well for meeting engagements and assaults, as flags and points will be the determining factor. For a delaying player, he will need to inflict losses on his opponent to make him pay for the flags, as it should be.

Its a small download and worth checking out if pbem is your thing and you want a result

5 Aircraft?! [:'(] Where were those? LOL!

Anyway, the battle was intense. I tried to fight for every inch of ground, and only gave up ground when forces were destroyed or ran away due to routing...which annoyed me as I wanted to Banzai more often. [:@] [;)]

The Hill 150 was where my cp was, and when I knew the end was near and the last of my real forced smashed, I pulled everything I could that was left to that one hill and dug in. I fired almost every mortar that I had dry, and used up two ammo trucks full of ammo. I pulled in my IGs, tried to get my last ATG in, but got waxed trying.

Gunny used excellent combined arms tactics, he would move his Marine assault teams with his armor, backed up with MGs and bazooka teams, with his scouts seeking me out. As soon as he found an element, mortar fire would rain down on it, his assault teams moved in with tanks/AFVs and burned them out with those damn flame throwers or HMG fire.

A very classic game engine stupidity was when I moved up a tank killer (TK) right in front of his M3 Satan flame tank, which was stacked with a Marine assault team. My TK failed to get a kill on the tank, but caused the assault team to retreat ONTO my TK...then his Satan fired its flamethrower onto my TK as an opfire after I missed, frying him...BUT...LOL....he wasted two of his own guys and they retreated away even further... [:D] ....only in SPWAW!

Goblin did an outstanding job making this map and making sure we had a great first PBEM experience. I learned a lot from watching Gunny kick my butt, made a lot of stupid mistakes, and all-in-all had a FANTASTIC time.

Thak you Goblin for your help and scenario and a deep bow to my enemy, Gunny, who kicked some serious butt and did his Marines proud.

[&o]

You won't escape so easily next time...Maline!

I find that most guys know who won in a PBEM, regardless of the 'score' results, which say Draw most of the damn time. For PBEM, it really should just give the higher point player the win, or call it a tie if it is within 500-1000 points or so.

Goblin
yes can we talk Mike into adjusting this points thing.??
have seen complaints about it from day one.
[:D]

Good stuff guys
dont quit playing PBEM now!!!

AK, you sincerely flatter me, but I play vs the AI almost exclusively in the Pacific, so I've had lots of practice at refining my tactics. I read about the campaigns/battles, which definitely helps.

I did succeed in doing the one thing I was banking on -- using your aggressiveness against you by goading you into attacking, even though it cost me. In real life, the banzai charges almost inevitably failed. Had you stayed in your entrenchments, you could've bled me to death.

My biggest mistakes came in the first three turns, when I had most of my force bunched up against those cliffs around Hill 300. Had you opened up with your mortars on that crowded beachhead...well, I thank the gods that you didn't.

It was a good, though stress-inducing game.

To Goblin: wonderful job, but I wish you'd given me a warning about the cliffsides. I don't encounter them in random maps, so I didn't have a clue that they were impassable to regular infantry.

Also, remember my suggestion to attach an assault squad to each rifle platoon, rather than giving the USMC complete assault platoons.

One more thing: to ALL PBEM players, I can certainly empathize with some of your requests for game changes now.

I actually DID plot my mortars in that area, but my preplots got messed up or I screwed up in my haste to end the turn and didn't do it right, so a full turn passed and I missed a golden opportunity.

Based on the scenario as it was given to us, you are correct, Gunny, it would have been better for me to just wait for you (I actually wanted to hit you, then melt away back into the jungle, but that didn't exactly work out). I really wanted to surprise you once or twice, but I messed up both times and you saw me coming a mile away, or just figured I would not sit on my hands, which is hard for me (and also would rely more on Goblin's design, rather than my own tactical skill -- I wanted to show you both I was no woosie...LOL! [:'(] ). But, as I said, I learned a lot.

I'm glad you guys had such a good time!

There's something about playing against a 'real life person' that makes it all feel so much more 'important' than beating on the AI, isn't there?

Dear Lord, imagine if I tried playing Gunny today. It'd be a massacre.

Basically my tactics involve (and this is in the Western Front, mostly) rushing every single one of my units forward under cover of mortars and hoping for the best.

I'm sure I'll get better . . . eventually.

Sounds like a fun fight was had. I wanna play this map too in PBEM if Goblin makes it available for the masses. A high body count jungle shoot-out would be cool.

Cyanide, I think you are quite generous. I do the same thing but with neither the mortar support nor the hope. [:D]

Something on the order of 30 flamethrowers, and very green jungle, will do that...[;)]

Lol, blame me bro, I made the scenario.[8D]

I am modifying it somewhat for play against the Japanese, or as PBEM. Maybe a little tougher for the Marine player, but not too much more. Glenn is very good with his Marine troops, so the average player may find it much more difficult than he did. I still plan on removing a few flamethrowers though.[:)]
