Bir Hacheim Libya
7/25/1941
0600 Hours

6 oclok in the morning and we are to move out in just a few minutes once again against the Germans at Bir Hacheim. it is hazy and the visability is only 350 yards today. This is great for us but bad for the Germans as it will cut down there long range guns. They will be right on top of us before they even see us. Will give our tank gunners the element of surpprise today.

A company has the honor of taking the north objectives. They have to cross 500 yards across open ground to the hill that the objective sits on. This hill runs 600 yrds nw to se and the flag sits on its extreme nw corner.

B will have the job of taking the centrer ground they have 250 yards to reach there objective which sits on the sw corner of another hill that runs 600 yards long towards the se.

The Canadins in the south has 400 yards to reach there objective which sits out in the open ground. There is a hill which sits behind this flag maybe 300 yards that the Germans will have to come over to reach this area. They will have the least cover once they have taken there objective. Where the other two companys in the center and north will move to the west slope of both of there hills and take the Germans as they pop over the hills.

0625 Hours

Only 25 minutes into this battle and it looks bad for our side. The germans have a large tank force facing us. B company in the center has been hit by at least 15 tanks. They are mostly PzIIIg and stug bs with some PzIIc thrown in for good measure. They came over the hill about 10 minutes into the battle. Our boys opened up on them but are having trouble doin any damage with there puny 2 lb guns. A lot of hits but with no damage being caused. They are right up against our line and pushing us back off the western slope of the hill. It is goin to take a miracle for us to hold the ground we have taken. The tanks are cutting our boys down with there mg at an alarming rate. Couple of squads have been wiped out already from the third plattoon B company. Plus there ATR was lost and a heavy MG wiped out. they also lost 2 of there 2pd portees along with a couple of tanks from e company.

A Company in the north ran into at least 6 tanks consisting of PzIIc and PzIIIh. They have been hit hard with men being taken out plus 2 tanks from company E that was there support. They have not reached there objective short by about 150 yards. Have reached the western slope of a small ridge tho. A squad popped his head over this ridge and down in a small gully behind this ridge was sitiing at least 3 companys of infantry. Dropped in some 8 inchers on them 5 minutes ago. Bet this made them think about staying in there.

Even tho B in the center has taken there objective I dont believe they will hold. Losing too much in tanks and men. I see them breaking in the next 5 minutes or so and starting to retreat from the large tank force the Germans have sent against them.

The Canadians in the south have taken there objective. Once it was taken they began to move towards the hill to there east. they only got maybe 50 yards before 8 german tanks appeared on the hill. They have not taken any more ground since. the german tanks has poured down a rain of steel on them taking out several men and tanks. here too our 2pdrs just dont have the kick to hurt even the lowly PzIIc tanks. Lots of hits with no apparent damage to the tanks. Sgt Bishop with the 3inch howetzer on his tank has taken out 2 PzIIc and one PzIIIG tanks which is one bright spot in todays battle. I hope he stays alive today I would personally like to reward him.

This battle is far from over and im afraid that there will be alot more dead men from our side. If we are able to fight the Germans to a draw it will be a miracle to say the least. Our boys are in for the fight of there lives today I fear.

Congratulations on the knighthood, sir!

It doesn't look good for our boys. Despite their ineffective equipment they've shown bravery above and beyond the call of duty.

Hi!

You don't have to buy anything. Just download the UOSU -program from
http://www.hh.iij4u.or.jp/~kmatuoka/uosu/indexe.html
Then unzip it and it is ready for use. I'll attach a picture how the settings are to be. UOSU has to be open at the same time as SPWAW and then you just press the 'print screen' button. On the right (see the picture) you'll have to give the folder where you want to place your picture.

The picture will probably be too big to upload here (limits) so open it with 'paint' -program (or some other) and 'save as...' jpg -file. That will make it smaller. Then just upload it here.

Hope this helps. (My main language is not English so if something is unclear, just ask again [;)] )

Bir Hacheim Libya

0700 Hours

Well we are are one hour into this battle and things are not going well at all. B company has just now managed to take there objective away from the mass of German armor. The whole right flank of B has been literally destoyed. After we managed to take out all the German armor we did not have next to no men to move forward onto the area. It is hard to get the men to come out of there holes and advance. I would say from all reports I am recieving B company is down below half strength right now. Even the left flank that was not involved in the german counter attack to retake the objective was hit hard.

The Canadians in the north has been cut down to below half strength as well. There too they faced at least 15 tanks and maybe 2 companys of men. They fought well and valiently and caused immense damage to the German forces. It is hard to get any kind of offensive force from there flank as well. It is hard to find a squad that has over 5 men left in them.

A company in the south after taking there objectives turned NE to try and help B in the center. Here too they ran smak dab into at least 15 tanks and maybe two companys of men. The Germans after taking the center flags had turned SW to try and take the south one as well. They ran into our advancing Men and tanks. One hell of a fight erupted with all the German tanks and there infantry being wiped out almost to the last man. Our men are now picking there way in and around wrecked hulks of the German armor. Killing retreating crews and blowing up the tanks that they had run from.

We have lost over half of our tank companys to this devastating attack of way over a hundred German tanks. Our boys did the best they could with what they have to fight with. I have had reports of several German tanks being hit as high as 25 times before being blown up. Most of our shots just glance off with no apparent damage to there armor.

A lot of the German armor was blown up by assaults by our troops. One sapper squad after being surrounded at the center objective held his ground and went to work on the enemy armor. 4 tanks had gotten around him he took out three with satchel charges and he blew the tracks off another with a frontal assualt. While in the heroic fight of there life they only lost 2 men. I would deem this a miracle in any bodys book. They managed to get away from there right after this outstanding fight.

A true miracle happened at HQ as well. The Germans had dropped some rockets very near to our group of officers as we surveyd the battle field trying to figure out what to do in the center. One went off and hit Lt. Harmon in the head he was standing right in front of me talking to me. If he had not been there i would have been dead for sure. I owe him my life. My knighthood almost ended as quick as it began.

0745 Hours

Well once again we have chased the Germans off the map. While in the process of beating them bad we destroyed everything they had with them except for 4 37 mm ATG we didnt find. Also found and took out all those dam 81mm mortars they had as well. The men were shouting with glee as we killed the last of the crews for the mortars. Never saw such a happy bunch of guys. We took out 26 artty units with a bunch of them being those little pesky 50mm kind. We lost 2 artty to there 105 that never seem to run out of ammo. Not like our guys were lucky if we have enough ammo to last our big guns 1 hour into the fight. At one hour and 45 minutes into the fight there 105 were still merrily banging away.

We were really banged up in this fight lost 396 men and 23 tanks almost my whole tank force was destroyed. But we got 96 of there tanks and 1567 of there infantry. Thats almost a four to one ratio for our side. Not too shaby but then we knew they had more then us when we got into this dam war.

Got some good news after the battle tho. Heard that we will get replacements of the Valient and Matilda III Tanks. More armor and heavier firepower which will make a big difference in our next battle im thinking. The folks at home I guess are realy trying to help us as much as possible getting us supplys and better equipment.

Have heard rumors next month we will be advancing on Tobruk at last. Maybe we are making some headway in this war. The battle next month will be our 8 th fight in a very long war so far. A lot of friends have been killed and this hurts worse then anything else. But we are starting to really gel as a fighting force to be reckoned with. The Germans no longer take us as a bunch of fools with no guts.

Very nice fight. Thanks for this story robot. You got a lot of tanks? I like the picture of you mixing it up with the Germans up close and nasty. IBTyrone recommended I read this story cause he said you 'got your ass handed to you' but I totally disagree. It sounds like you really stomped on the Germans despite being outnumbered by almost 5 times. These are the best fights like when you lose almost all you got but still manage to squeak out a win. Whoops. My bad TokyoBoy. I only remember robot getting wacked the first part of the battle. I forgot he came back to win.

This is the one where robot got his head handed to him. It was a dark day for the British Empire...

Here's some of robot's other threads where he did not clean up:

I appreciate robot's persistence in posting AARs on a regular basis, and as you pointed out, TokyoBoy, he willingness to report everything that happens, both the good and bad battles.
