You try to shoot smoke with one of your tanks, and of course the first try it doesnt shoot, then an enemy tank shoots you. [:@] somehow knowing you tried to shoot smoke. [X(]
Wonder if this little Gem can be fixed?
Plus the sp arty units shooting unlimited rounds of smoke, above and beyond their shot total.

I agree! [:@]

Also, when you go to take a shot and the enemy gets their op fire first...huh? My guys are hidden and waiting for them, and they get shot first, pinned, then they can't fire at all. Next turn. [:@]

I don't know, but the program has it planned that you *may* also fail to drop smoke. It simulates panic that enemy fire arouses in your troops.
Don't be shocked, I AM funny.

He's talking about a smoke shell from a tank main gun, I think.

and while Alby is fired up -[:@]- perhaps we could include another annoyance --- the old jeep or truck close to a tank or group of tanks when playing with air ----- ( this tactic or cheat will work with almost all units too ) -this one readly KILLS ME ---- always shoots the jeep or the truck -- lol --- and the tanks -- those with some aa will hit the plane sometimes -- rare but sometimes to readly put salt into the wound -- [;)] bud -- (aka ICED )

True, but some things in SPWAW make it...um...I have no analogy. Crap. [:(]

Just fix it so you don't get shot for "clicking" and doing nothing....that isn't war...that is lame.

Ah, the old "free op fire" trick -- been a victim of it many times.

Yeah, we all have pet peeves and annoyances with the things we love, but such is marriage, uh, I mean, war (freudian slip). [8|]

Biggest annoyance for me? Just happened to me. German rifle squad opens up on my Soviet rifle squad at 3 hexes. In the same hex is a KV tank. Right behind them is another KV/rifle squad combo (so, four hexes from bad guys). Who returns fire at the Germans? Yep, a partisan squad 12 hexes away with a single weapon. Then his partner from 11 hexes. German (of course) shoots again. Who op-fires now? Nope, not the 2 huge tanks or 2 rifle squads right there, the partisans. Went on like this all turn.

Next turn: German PzIVf fire at a KV at 6 hexes, and I spot him. Who shoots back? My 12.7mm HMG, 12 hexes from the bad guy, and another KV with no main gun left on it. After 3 shots, it finally got around to letting the tank with a main gun and short range fire.

The routine for picking out who op-fires should be modified somewhat. I hate having tanks without main guns, or with no main gun shots left, fire their MG's at enemy tanks 15 hexes away while perfectly good tanks 4 hexes from the enemy are blown to smithereens because they cannot fire back...[:@][:@][:@][:@]

It should be noted that in my first example above, my troops have 20 more experience than the partisans do also.[:@] In my second, my troops have 25 more experience than that 12.7mm HMG crew.[:@]

As a counter point, would the more experienced troops realise they cannot take out a tank and it is better to stay hidden?

The Germans didn't have a tank, except in my second example, and my KV was more than capable of dealing with it, but it had a machinegun and tank without a main gun return fire instead. Repeatedly.

Ya know I have been thinking about this lately, and I am in agreement...something seems to have gotten out of whack with the op fire routine..over the various versions.
I hope this can be looked at.

I think Infantry should not op fire at armor with small arms, period. (Of course AT wepons are fine). These are (relatively) trained soldiers, not bunnyhoppers in CoD, and they should know that a 7.92mm rifle round isn't going to do squat vs a T34/85's armor. And obviously, the tanks should not fire AP rounds at infantry, especially when they have MG and HE rounds left that would do a much better job. I've noticed My M4A3s firing HE rounds at StugIIIs during Op fire, rather than the more logical AP or HEAT round. They follow up with ineffective MG fire. This is why I just manually do op fire now; so I can manage my idiot forces' ammo expendature somewhat better. If, in the above batle my M4s and M10s had fired AP ammo exclusively at armored targets, rather than mixing HE and MG fire; I would have crushed that German force by the end of the second turn, rather than the third; without losing 2 M4A3s and a M3 Halftrack (and the M3's crew along with assorted M4 crew members). If the german AI had sense, I probably would have lost more than that; though I had a decided advantage, with each company having a good field of view from a hill, and ATG support.

Sounds like stuff that for sure needs a fix if possible. I notice when people play a game until they know every little technicality of the mechanics, they tend to get annoyed a lot and the fun factor is lost. Check out War in the Pacific forum and see the endless reams of complaint threads about nothing important. I reckon its better just to scrap it out and not worry about such minor quibbles. Its much more fun and doesn't induce stress that way. [:)]

Exactly. It is a prize you have to pay for chickening out of combat. You have made me to say it too loud now.

When firing smoke (or Z fire) the mouse is much more sensitive than normal for some reason. You just have to be sure that the cursor is positioned in the middle of the hex.

What I would like to see is the "infinite smoke shots" thing fixed ...
