Devices and Slot Numbers

Post by Dereck »

Okay according to the manual the Devices are segregated into the following slot ranges:

001 thru 136
137 thru 138 - Allied Devices
139 thru 196
197 ...... 197 - Ohka Bomb
198 thru 212
213 ...... 213 - Atomic Bomb
214 thru 235
236 ...... 236 - Aircraft Engine and/or various support squads
237 thru 249 - Japanese Devices
250 thru 254
255 thru 314 - Japanese Devices
315 thru 517 - Allied Devices
518 thru 526 - Industry Devices
527 thru 999

236 thru 256 - Aircraft Engines and various support squads

Okay, now the question I have is for the ranges without a description does that mean they are available for both Allied and Japanese devices?

Also are there specific slot ranges that a specific type of device needs to be in like the following?:

00-Aircraft Cannon
01-SS Rocket
02-PGM
03-GP Bomb
05-Drop Tank
09-Aircraft Radar
10-Surface Radar
12-AA Gun
14-Factory Machine
16-Torpedo
17-DP Gun
18-Naval Gun
19-Army Weapon
20-ASW
21-Mine
22-AFV
23-Squad
24-Vehicle
26-Resource
PO2 US Navy (1980-1986);
USS Midway CV-41 (1981-1984)
Whidbey Island, WA (1984-1986)
Naval Reserve (1986-1992)

236 thru 256 - Aircraft Engines and various support squads

Only slots 237 to 246 work for engines. That is, ONLY these slots show up on certain reports. Worse, those reports hard code in the name of the company associated with the slot. Renaming the device slot does not work for all reporting situations! Engines actually "work" in other slots - insofar as they get used - but you cannot monitor them during play. This is pretty ugly - 10 is not enough engine slots - and company names are not particularly meaningful. What matters about an engine is not who made it - sometimes different companies made each other's engines. What matters is things like power, physical dimensions, etc. It is possible to come up with a somewhat more rational engine system - and I have done so (although only Joe has reviewed it). It took lots of tests to understand the slot limitations.

Usually the answer is yes. MANY devices are used by both sides.
Certain devices are involved with production for Japan - so this is a bit strange and spooky. But yes, probably with rare exceptions.

Yes - and no.

Devices for ships must be lower numbers - where the line is I do not know - but IF you are above it you will know right away - the device number will change in seconds!

Devices for aircraft must be in a range - but that range is not exactly what the manual says - it is more than that - but not by much. I keep finding "one more" that works.

There are some hard coded special cases - and mostly we don't know what they are.

Ship devices need to be 1-255.
If you try to use a bigger number (like 258), when the device number is saved, it will show as 002. [#256 comes out as #0]

The reason is that the ship device has a smaller storage space than others (LCU/aircraft).
This is further limited since some slots less than 255 are already in use for other things (eg support/engines).

Air ordance must be left as 195.

Device #209 (800kg bomb) is hard coded.
