RE: Operation Goblin is GOGOGO !!!!
Hi Andy,
if you've got the time, could you possibly track the losses of you LCU's when you hit Enewitok, either by looking at the VP increase or by tracking the actual losses, which I guess is only really practical if you turn off replacements.
The aim is two-fold:
To understand the actual cost of a late-war atoll landing. #
To reinforce the arguement that land combat isn't deadly enough in general, ie losses are mainly in the disabled category. This eventually leads to a "winner takes it all" situation, where the weaker side is destroyed and the stronger side left effectively unscathed. This of course has important implications for the late-war Japanese strategy, as he can't hope to bleed the Allied player. No Iwo's in WitP...
How long do you think it'll be before the Kwai LCU's will be ready for offensive operations?
Thanks,
Tom

Where's the Any key?

RE: Operation Goblin is GOGOGO !!!!
OK no probs Timtom.
I am going to try and hit entiwock with 2 Divs plus armour.
My Divs will need 3 months to recuperate. Although 33rd will be ready in about 1 month.
So by the time they are prepped they should be ready. Now to pick a target....
After Entiwok I will be splitting my amphib assets transferring most back to SW PAC/ SOPAC.
Time is a real factor here I feel behind the curve and need to accelerate but I have no idea how fast to move.

RE: Operation Goblin is GOGOGO !!!!
For those of you concerned with the to quick recovery of units here is a little stat for you.
7th Inf Div on 24/12/43 had 46 AV and was 59/100 on 5/1/44 it had 159 AV and had recovered to 70/100. On average just under 1% recovery in full supply with HQ present per day in a non Malaria Base. Now Combat arms appear to recover far more quickly that support as indicated by the rise in AV of the unit c 10 AV points per day.
37th Inf Div on 24/12/43 had 91 AV and was 64/100 on 5/1/44 it had 165 AV and had recovered to 71/100. On average just under 0.5% recovery in full supply with HQ present per day in a non Malaria Base. Now Combat arms also appear to recover far more quickly that support as indicated by the rise in AV of the unit c 6 AV points per day.

RE: Operation Goblin is GOGOGO !!!!
Believe it or not this is a quiet turn.
My 2 new Essex's are headingto join the fleet at Kwal.
1st Aphib TF has been diverted to Gili Gili to pick up 3rd NZ for the assault on Aitape.
I estimate a month before the NG Campaign heats up again.
Operation Sleep (Entiwok) is under way its not as organised as the invasion of Kwal because I have had loading problems but my fleet will rendevous 60 miles from Entiwok.
After the troops are ashore I will divert 4 CV TF's to NG for Operation Gold, 2 of the CV's will return to Pearl to provide Commerce cover and get sys damage down as will 2 of my BB's.
The BB's will be replaced by the Iowas due soon and the CV's by the 2 new Essex's that have just arrived.

RE: Operation Goblin is GOGOGO !!!!
I raided Wake today just for the hell of it I have no intention of attacking it but it may make PZB divert resouce.
Fleet sailed today for Entiwock after I take this island this campaign is over for 3 months and the focus switches back to SOPAC and SWPAC.
Plus I am considering a deep strike on Bali just to annoy PZB

Re air asw if it was me I would sort out an agreed set of houserules with my opponent to stop players exploiting known game bugs or issues. The patch you are using (v1.50 I believe) has well known problems with aircraft attacks vs subs - matrix admitted as much by changing the code in a later beta patch. By keeping the older patch but exploiting the known bugs the chances of player bickering seem very high to me.
I also notice your opponent uses very large numbers (10 or more) of escorts for his shipping - again exploiting the known problems with overdone ship asw in v1.50. I hesitate to openly criticise what some may consider 'gamey play' but I do know that such things can become very frustrating in a closely matched game such as yours.
In my own pbm game we use v1.50 as well and have mutually agreed a few houserules to make things more sensible ( non patrol or floatplane air groups can only set search up to 20% max, max escorts(of any ship type with depth charges) of 8 for any taskforce and so forth). It all makes for a better game in my view and cuts down on the chances of player moans at ahistorical results.

I raised this before and with all the other innacuracies in the game PZB is unwilling to agree houserules on this area. I respect his position on this one but I dont like it.
I will persevere with my Sub campagn until losses become to severe

Thats a real shame. Though it is something you can exploit too. [:D]

RE: DAMMED AIR ASW
I didn't like it much either, that is why I had my subs either in port or on patrol in the north pacific. every time I tried to send them to interdict his shipping they got smothered with 100+ aircraft in every hex. He would not back off so I just went with it, basically fighting the war without subs. [:(]

Use them as mine layers. In one of my games with "open" rules (asw deathstars) I have taken to using my submarines to mine all of my opp's harbors. It works like a charm. Not only does he have to spend alot of MSW sweeping, my subs are never in the same place more then one turn. I can get in...drop a mine and out before is ASW forces can respond. If my subs cross a transport or warship on their way in and out...they attack it with torpedos...if not...they return home to pick up more mines and its wash, rinse, repeat.
It is the most effective way to employ American submarines...and my sub losses went way down due to using them this way. Plus it keeps his MSW units very busy so they can't be used as ASW platforms.

Well, I'm pretty sure they are going to address the sub visibility issue, I just hope they go far enough. Nothing worse than seeing players have to radically alter the way assets were historically used because the model is so far off it is possible to use them totally ahistorically or not at all.

I tried that, they got hit trying to get to a harbor. Get within 6 hexes of any level 4 airfield and they go blub - blub. He has about 1200+ LB on ASW patrol.

RE: DAMMED AIR ASW
Well you cant blame him for not agreeing this houserule, because he already lost most of its submarine fleet because of wrong ASW model in this game.

Of course can one blame him. It is only the question whether it is fair. [;)]

RE: DAMMED AIR ASW
I dont blame him but it is annoying !!!!
I will win out but I may need to send the allied deathstar in to annihalate these ASW bombers
As his pilot quality starts to fall this will become less of an issue

RE: DAMMED AIR ASW
To be honest
if the japanese did use 1200+ planes as asw assets in the DEI / Japan area submarine operations would have been a bit dicy.

RE: DAMMED AIR ASW
can't blame Pzb he concentrated so big ASW assets in region - you need to try hit him outside of base areas even if it is difficult
if player ties assets and burn lots of supply why shouldn't he have results ?

RE: DAMMED AIR ASW
Hmmm not sure if I agree. 1200 aircraft is a lot but its an AF without the technical expertise of Coastal Command operating in deep water (none of my subs are in shallow) hitting 5 or 6 subs a day is extreme.
However cest la vie we move on Operation Sleep goes in tonight I will monitor the condition of the units after they land.
This op is not as well planned as Kwal so I am not expecting great results.
For all you amphib commanders out there my number 1 tip is ARMOUR ARMOUR ARMOUR it is tanks that win battles on atolls (so far).
