TOAW - Your favorite war

Post by *Lava* »

Hi!

Just wondering what people's favorite war is when playing TOAW.

Personally, I love the WWII stuff (which I think most do). I tried hard to get into the post WWII scenarios, but never could really get into them. I think maybe that's because with the WWII scenarios you have lots of units and also I especially like the divisional scale.

Definitely post-WW2, though there are some WW2 campaigns I like to study (Malaya 1941-42, Soviets vs. Nazis 1944-45, Manchuria 1945). But it doesn't really start getting interesting until after the 1950's...

Definitely the First World War.

I also enjoyed very much most of the 1973 scenarios, and virtually all the Middle Eastern conflicts. Even Desert Storm can be fun, if the allied air force is removed.

The opening phase of the Second World War. Mainly up until Russia got involved.

Why is that? Just out of interest.

It's during that period - the height of the Cold War and beyond - many of the technological innovations of WW2 really became viable weapons systems or force multipliers with major impact on the battlefield (jets, missiles, nukes, helicopters, comms, etc.). These innovations add a level of complexity to operational-level warfare which did not exist before, and which appeals to me.

Also, from a scenario designer's perspective, conflicts of the post-WW2 era tended to be smaller & more self-contained, and hence somewhat easier to simulate.

They also tend to be better documented, and in a lot of cases hypothetical. This makes things easier for the designer- there's no need to adjust a NATO vs. Warszawa Pact scenario to make the historical result possible.

Not always - unless you're into foreign languages. Cyprus 1974 is the reason I have a Langenscheidt's Turkish-English dictionary on my bookshelf...[;)]

World War II... definitely. The game just seems perfect for the period. Haven't done much with other eras, though I have downloaded tons of scenarios and am impressed with the versatility of the game.

Definitely WWII , at the battalion scale, especially the west front (after the invasion). Though the middle east wars are also quite interesting.

Nothing can compare with World War II. All that came after are either just hypothetical, guerrella-type, limited, or bush wars - and then there's the nuke issue. World War I was at least a real war, but it was so immobile only a few parts of it can compare with WWII. The American Civil War and the Napoleonic Wars would be as interesting as WWII, but they're not ideal for TOAW.

Mm. Post-wwii conflicts are usually decided by political rather than military concerns. This tends to make them less fun to play.

WW2. Massive scope and you've got motorised/mechanised forces for rapid manoeuvre. I've got nothing against other eras and enjoy playing anything from C20th.

I would have to go with Korea or hypothetical NATO/US vs PACT/Soviets would be my favorite conflicts. If restricted to World War 2 I would say those regions away from France and Germany, such as Italy or the Balkans or the area composed of French Indo-China.
Take my word for it. You never want to be involved in an “International Incident”.

Mine is Korea but really want a good enough editor that will let me scale it down to battalion sized forces.

Or the Italy one

That is the scale I like best can do without the divisional size clashes.

Wouldnt mind a Battalion sized Kursk or Gulf War II

And someone do something about Vietnam. The US military is too weak that scenario of old TOAW.

Do have some created scenarios for Stalingrad and Spanish Civil War that are battalion sized and good. Would like some for the Bulge and Pacific war (and corisponding map scales !)
