4/11-4/12/42

Post by Mark VII »

Back to the AAR.

Forgot to save the combat report for 4/09-4/10/42, but here is what my notes say. The Kashii which was heavily damaged at Trimcomalee managed to creep into Rangoon with 98 flotation damage. I had hoped that the AR present would render aid but she was to bad along and sank the next day. The I-164 was hit twice by patroling Allied a/c off Mannargudi. She has since arrived in Singapore but will be out of the war for several months.

My stranded company at Mannargudi is over run by the 2nd UK Division. The Ceylon op is officially over...for now.

The rest of the 2nd Para jumps into Kohima in an attempt to expand the air-bridgehead and to provide a retreat path in case Jorhat is unable to hold off the expected English counterattack. My air recon was telling me there was only one allied ground unit at Kohima but the descending parachutists of the 2nd were in for a rude surprize. Instead of only a base force defending, a Indian Tank Brigade was hiding in the weeds and prevented a sudden capture by my valient para's. The para's go splat!

Now on to the 4/11-4/12 turn. The Commonwealth tanks too exception the para's who interupted their tea break and proceeded to educate them on the proper way to start a battle. The survivors retreat to Jorhat.

The five Allied brigades left at Songkhia continue to refuse to die or surrender despite of repeated air and ground attacks. These guys have had no supply since Jan 42 and I don't understand how thay have lasted this long!

Another lost allied Brigade, this one in Southern Burma is dealt with...finally.

Wuchow Taken 4/13-4/14/42

Post by Mark VII »

Action in China picks up, Wuchow falls with the first ground assault. Time to roll up the Chinese line! We also eliminate the Chinese unit bypassed next to Yenen.

One step closer in Java. The 2nd and 4th Dutch Rgt's, Tjilatjap Garrison, 4th Dutch Naval Base and the 19th,20th and 21st DAF BF's all surrender one hex SW of Batavia. On to Batavia!!!

The good news ends in Burma. The 255th Indian Tank Brigade crosses the river into Jorhat and begins the Commonwealth's efforts to retake the city.

G'day Mate, Kim is doing well though we are both fighting colds at the moment.

Any chance of posting a screen shot of Burma? BTW how is the wife unit Mk1 ?

Edit....

The situation in Northern Burma is coming to a head. I had hoped that the bulk of the commonwealth ground units were defending along the coast against any amphib operations. The airborne drops were designed to seize that "bridge to far", and isolate Imphal and Ledo from India. The main objective to gain the riverlines at Jorhat and Ledo which would of severly slowed down any British offensive into Burma.

The short comings of this shoe string operation are beginning to show. The surprize landing on Jorhat was a success but the Brits have reacted quicker than I thought. Since the successfull jump, there has been massive air-transport activity bringing in supplies and reinforcements. Elements of the 12th Aviation Rgt, 5th Division B, and most of the Sasebo 3rd SNLF have been flown in. Large portions of the 1st and 2nd Para's are also on the ground.

A Zero Daitai was also brought in to provide CAP and they did good work for two days. However, noticing a ground unit across the river got me to thinking that when the Allied unit crossed the river there would be a Shock attack and a bad result would instantly cost me a highly trained Zero Daitai. The Zero's were pulled back to Myitkyina and ordered to provide LR-CAP from there. Even with the LR-CAP, Ed is pounding Jorhat everyday, once the 255th Tank crossed the river, my Sally's also joined the fray.

Only 8 miles South of Ledo is the "A" Rgt of the Imperial Guards Division. They are in good shape after their march through the jungle trail and ready to free Ledo from the Imperial yoke of the British Empire. I hope they will arrive in four days.

I have plenty of Air in Burma and it is very active hitting Ledo, Imphal and sometimes Dacca. Losses are not heavy but I am splashing maybe 3 or 4 times more than I am losing.

Back at Jorhat, things are starting to get critical. An armored Rgt is already across the river and something appears ready to join it. I'm sure Ed is going to throw everything he has into this battle!

Weather stops most air activity in Burma. Two shock attacks on Jorhat are repulsed with heavier losses to the Allies. But the defenders of Jorhat are prepared to defend to the last man.

The 5 Commonwealth Brigades trapped at Songkhia somehow continue to resist?

Intel informs me that the Tank Brigade that was in Kohima has now moved to Jorhat joining the "A" Rgt of the 18th UK Division and the 255th Indian Tank Brigade. These two days they rest and only bombard my valiant defenders.

The movement of the 254th Tank Brigade means Kohima is only defended by a Base Force. A SNLF Para Battalion is ordered to jump in and seize the airfield. Bad weather slows down the intended air support and I believe cancels some of the airtransport. The attack does not go as hoped and the paras fail to take the airfield. A reasonable risk to try to expand my air-bridgehead.

My guys at Songkhia are ordered to rest in order to get some fatigue back.

Batavia Surrenders 4/19-4/20/42

Post by Mark VII »

The Dutch have been evicted from Java and the populace have happily joined the Greater East Asia Co-Prosperity Sphere. Batavia was captured mostly intact with a bunch of oil and resources nicely stacked in the port by the previous owners. Tankers and AK's are only two days away!

There is a little cleaning up to do, but the DEI are now cleared of major enemy formations and the oil is flowing freely. Lots of oil has already been delivered to the homelands, much more is at sea and the production centers are mostly intact. Only Soerabaja was heavily damaged, in fact oil and resources are mostly destroyed there.

In Burma, Jorhat is recaptured by the Brits but this was expected. The Imperial Guards"A" arrived at Ledo the day before and attack on the 19th. There are more Commonwealth than we expected, the 26th Indian Division is present with three BF's and in a level 4 fortification. Needless to say, at the end of the day the Guards are still on the outside of Ledo. It took to long to go through the jungle trail and Ed had time to get reinforcements there.

After a two week vacation to places warm, I am back ready to catch up on my AAR's!

The air war in Burma continues but storms ground most of my a/c but the Allied bases in Southern India seem clear. My valient Para's come close to taking Kohima on the 21st but are defeated on the 22nd as a Indian Tank Bde sneaks in. I think the quick-strike Para gambit into SE India has offically failed! It is time to evacuate my remaining Para's for future opportunities for glory.

The air war over Northern Burma/SE India continues. Most missions get into the air, some enemy bases are well hit, and the raid on Imphal bags a bunch of Hurricanes! The RAF continues to harrass my Para's as they effort to retreat back to Burma. A little disappointed that my LR-Cap over Ledo is not shooting down many Buffalo's who are on ground-attack missions against the Imperial Guards.

There seems to be an American Sub offensive developing in the waters near Japan. Over the last several days, naval search has been reporting many sub contacts. We manage to get ASW TF's over a several sub contacts but nothing happens. Yes, DC's are dropped but no hits, some are shaken but none are stirred.

The air offensive against Chinese resources begins with a softening up raid on Chungking's airfield complex with good results as a number of Chinese fighters are downed. Attacks on the actual resources will begin the 27th!

Finally in Burma, the LR-Cap over Ledo score big on the ground attacking Buffalo's. Imphal and Kohima continue to be hit and the LR-Cap over my Para's splash some Allied bombers.

Bad weather prevents most air activity. Day one of resource attacks at Chungking gets off the ground but Day 2 activities are cancelled.

Shoho(heavily damaged while Mini KB sank British CV's) makes it to Singapore and after refueling is off to the Homelands for major repairs. She had 60 flotation damage when hit but made it to Rangoon where she was pumped dry in about a week. The AR that I had moved there came in very handy with quick repairs for several ships from the Battle of Trimcomalee.

Sorta forgot to save the AAR for the 4/29-4/30 turn.

The key moment was the five trapped Allied Brigades at Songkhia finally surrendered. I had bypassed them leaving two brigades of the Imperial Guards to keep them occupied. After months of minor air attacks by dive bombers and occasional ground attacks they finally had enough. Now on to Khota Bharu which was also bypassed with the initial Ind. Brigade left to keep them busy. Some bombers moving up from the finished Java campaign are stopping at Georgetown to lend some assistance.

Happy news, the Brits are being requested to withdraw a CL and two valuable DD's or spend some PP's!

It was on May 1st that I ordered a Port attack on Chandpur. Recon had sited two Allied subs in port so I decided to try to catch them in port. Two Sentai of Sally's, a Daitai of Betty's, Kates from the Shoho, and four Zero units were assembled at Akyab and ordered to attack. Nothing happened during either the 1st or the 2nd, must of been grounded by weather...geeerrrr [:@]

This AAR is including most everything that happened. There is lots of planned air activity in China. When you see Claudes, Zero's, Vals or Kates on ground missions, they are untrained rebuilt units trying to gain experience. The attacks on Cebu and in China have been very successfull in raising experience levels. Most units go from an average of 35 to 55 in four days. Much quicker than training missions. After that progress is a little slower but a Val unit and a Zero unit now average at 65. Losses have been light, only 2 a/c of some 90 newby's.

During my haste before our vacation, also forgot to save the AAR's for these four days.

The ordered attack on the Chandpur does not go during the first turn of the 3rd and the 4th. Finally, on the 5th, a raid goes leaving behind the Betty's. The Trusty takes one 250KG hit while the Dutch O19 catches two 250KG'ers.

More and more American Subs are being spotted in Japanese home waters. I have lots of DD's in the area to go out in ASW groups but no hits either side. A daring Sub is seen in the Sea of Japan and a 5 DD ASW group is ordered out to attack. They will arrive on the 7th.

Allied air in Burma either resting or grounded by bad weather. Another strike at the subs hiding in Chandpur Harbor got off the ground with another hit to each sub. One would think that three 250KG hits on a sub would be very bad for their health but no sinkings reported! I fear a fighter trap so these bombers will be going for a new target on the 9th.

This is the second turn of activity by Chinese medium bombers. They are annoying me and a surprize is being planned for the IL-4's flying to Hanoi.

Left on the AAR my ASW activities in home waters against this apparent American sub offensive. No hits reported, just the normal amounts of near misses and rattled stern reports which don't tell me squat! So far the American subs have attacked nothing but ASW forces with no hits.

Another slow turn.

Day 3 and 4 of the IL-4 raids from Chengtu. This time they damage some industry. The unemployed Zero's of damaged Ryujo fly in and will be waiting on the 11th for any Chinese bandits that venture to Hanoi.

On the Burma front, RAF and supporting USAAC attempts to disrupt my forward base at Akyab. The B17's came from Calcutta, guess we will go there on the 11th and effort to catch some on the ground. Forgot that I did try to go to Chandpur again but got no hits on the subs. But did find the AVG and did splash five of them.

Serious operations begin against Khota Bharu to eliminate the final elements of British colonialism. The 38th Division is being shipped and should make short work of the garrison.

The Hanoi bandits don't do well when there is resistance, over %50 fail to return. In fact, this is a good two days in the air for the Japanese. 50 Allied a/c are destroyed to 15 Japanese. Including 23xBlenheimIV, 7xIL4c, 6xBeaufortI, 5 Beaufort VIX, 3xB17E and 5xZero's destroyed in the air or on the ground. The war total is 2099 Allied to 1012 Japanese a/c lost to all causes.

The American Sub Salmon, spotted in the Sea of Japan is set apon by a 6xDD ASW TF. After 4 attacks during which DC's are released each time, Ed tells me she suffered only 23 damage. Alittle dissapointing for a sub fixed by air and then found by the DD's looking for her!

The 38th XX, 25Army HQ, 23 Eng Rgt, a Tank Rgt, two Arty units have all landed on Khota Bharu joining the 4th Mixed Rgt. They have started to sight in there guns this turn in prep for the final assault to remove the last elements of British Colonial rule.

Shoho has reached Japan and she is the last damaged ship from the ill-fated Ceylon invasion force to reach a repair port.

Khota Bharu surrenders 5/13-5/14/42

Post by Mark VII »

With the Java campaign behind them, the 38th Division supported by elements of the 25th Army make short work of the long ago bypassed Khota Bharu garrison. Not counting POW's, Malaya is now officially devoid of Allied troops.

In an effort to ambush the Chinese SB2's that have been trying to hit Kungchang, the Ki-43-Ib Oscar's flown in to do the ambushing prove nearly useless.

ASW attacks continue to have no effect. Soon Ed will probably start to leave them in the chosen hex even if a group of DD's is sitting on top.[:@]

Back to mostly quiet.

Weather is slowing things down in Northern Burma. Recon tells me 12 Mohawks are on CAP over Dacca so the bomber force at Akyab will go there on the 17th for fun. Best to hit em where they're not the strongest! Chandpur has lots of P40B's and Hurricanes but no offensive ops from there yet.

Cleaning up of bypassed units in Sumatra underway. The So.Sumatra Garrison Battalion and a base force surrender at the end of the day.

IJN ASW TF's continue to only scare the fish population!

The Chungking resource bombing campaign continues, they are almost half destroyed now. The airfield damage there does not seem to be being repaired. Either no supply or no engineers?

Burma/India air operations continue. 17 to 5 in destroyed a/c, I think I need to do better than that! As I suspected, the Mohawks are brushed aside and Dacca is hit hard. The fighter sweep that arrives a day late finds some Hurricane's and AVG P40B's and splashes 5 bogies while losing only one.

Hsinyang is cleared so now the RR is free of Chinese units so I can finally move freely between the north and south to Changsha. Which way will my Armies go?
