Right now subs are not doing that good of a job. I would like to see if some loaded down APs are hungry for a torp or two.

Helps that I'm using the Rat Runs. I'm more concerned about a CV attack on a convoy than the odd sub attack.

I'm finding that because subs are spotted so easily during the air search phase they are all but useless. Rarely are subs firing torps. Commonly subs are being spotted by escorts because they have been spotted all day by air search to the point that DLs become meaningless.

Japanese landings at Palembang begin.

Another great performance by the crack Asiatic USAAFE P-40 pilots over Java!

Bill is now starting to gobble up many of the undefended island bases in the Central Pacific.

Noumea continues to suffer from the attentions of ten or so Japanese carriers. A supply convoy unloading at Noumea manages to maintain a low profile, subsequently scatters, and escapes SE without loss.

Those P-40s continue their deadly trade, this time eating up some unescorted Betty's and Nell's.

Homan is basically abandonned due to ZOC and supply issues and falls to the advancing Japanese.

Despite losing the services of nearby bomber bases to Japanese air strikes the defence of Palembang is going well so far. Time is everything in this game and the longer I delay Bill and add a few more APs to the sunk ships list the more difficult every future amphibious op will be for Japan.

Kendari has about 75% of it's resources damaged...bad news for Japan.

Noumea's defenders are being pounded but refuse to be dislodged.

Land combat continues to be irksome.

Manila finally surrenders! 2:1 odds

Post by Ron Saueracker »

Manila's gallant defenders finally cave in to the impossible odds facing them and surrender on the first 2:1 odds result achieved with no fortifications. Perhaps I should have chosen a non base hex for the final stand...I may have been able to come to their rescue in 1944.[8|] I'm not looking forward to all these land and air units being available for other theatres!

Noumea's defenders throw back another Japanese attack after being pummelled from the air...these guys are good!

Got caught bombing too predictably and got bloodied near Taung Gyi. Cost of speed play.

Some of the ships from the scattered convoy to Noumea are caught by KB...I was confident they would make it but Bill was persistant and faster.[;)]

RE: Manila finally surrenders! 2:1 odds

Post by Ron Saueracker »

The RN subs are rolling sevens and elevens...another AP gets gutted by a torp salvo!

Noumea is rapidly becoming untenable. I'd hate to lose New Caledonia to Japan as it is strategically vital but I just don't have enough naval forces available to counter a dozen japanese carriers and their battle fleet without having sizable airbases within LBA range to support the defence of Noumea.

I decided to just boot the Japanese out of Wuchow as encircling and destroying LCUs in non friendly base hexes, or non base hexes, is a near impossibility with the current flawed land combat model.

DesRon 1 and the USS Detroit catch another reinforcement/supply convoy at Johnston Is and again, only catch one ship of two.[8|]

Noumea is just getting relentlessly pounded by the air and from the sea. Somehow (I know, a totally random die roll) the PT squadron at Noumea gets surprised by a bombardment TF spotted two days earlier.[8|] Funny how only transport TFs can benefit from spotting enemy combat TFs (they retreat from oncoming spotted enemy SC TFs) but no other TFs get any consideration.

USS Perch is rolled over by a transport TF south of Noumea! This can only mean one thing...Norfolk Island is on the hit list.

It's the latest CHS version (1.06) with AB's Version % Map with V5 Extension. Gorgeous map and great scenario.

Truant does it again! The job these few RN subs are doing is up there with Wanklyn of HMS Upholder.

It must be brutally demoralizing to be pasted by a bombardment TF like the one Bill has parked off Noumea.[X(]

CV Battle...sort of...again.

Post by Ron Saueracker »

Palembang is about to fall it appears. Outcome was never in doubt. I'm happy with the defenders' performance, especially the RN subs. Hopefully the engineers blow the snot out of the facilities.

These kind of emails add to the stress and fun of PBEM. Possible sync issues make what you are watching (Allied player) possibly totally false.

Well, I decided that since KB appeared to have retired for refueling and replenishment after about a weeks worth of air ops vs Noumea it was relatively safe to risk the two CVs in the area to stop the Norfolk Island invasion (which would have doomed Noumea for sure). Despite the no launch vs his carriers, the damage to the cruisers and to his air groups was an acceptable result. The damage to Hornet is unfortunate but again, it could have been worse. I was extremely pleased with my F4F pilots as they performed admirably vs the Japanese A6M2s during this battle, undoubtedly saving the Hornet. A huge improvement over the previous bloodbath during "Southern Cross". Not a single Kate scored a hit either.

North of Java a large transport TF was sighted, most likely headed for Merak to bolster the Paratroopers.
