There were 2 ways of numbering years in Japan (now 3 I guess, because they now use western years as well).Japanese specs tended to be referred to by the Emperor's calendar. Hirohito was the Showa Emperor, and ascended the throne in 1926. Years were counted for the Showa Emperor, starting from Showa 1 in 1926. The Zero spec was issued in 1937 (12 Showa), and was referred to as the 12-Shi fighter until it entered service, and acquired the Type number corresponding to year 2600. Quite why they did it I don't know. Anyone?

Inbreeding. Years of Isolationism made them as a nation completely whack. I don't think they are the same anymore (in case anyone thinks I'm having a go at the current Japanese peoples ) but it would be nice if the just acknowledged what they did, and apologized for it.

No takers on the last 2 ways of referring to a Zero? Clue time:

1. all parents have names for their babies.

2. This one is really quite obscure, but a certain HQ in WitP had its own enemy aircraft naming system - fell in to disuse quite quickly because the boys and girls names took over.

well for the questions... i am astonished, how much informations are hidden here... but wasn´t the zeke the AGM6-5 ? and the zero the AGM6-2/3 ?

I allways thought that Zeke was the allied code for the later model... can anybody tell me if he misinterpret something here ?

And does not the modified WitP-files content the japanese names ? hm, maybe i have to look...

In passing you have given one of the missing answers I was looking for: A6M1, A6M2 etc (depending on model - I count these as 1 'name').
The Zeke was the allied code name for all Zeros (except the Hamp issue described above). Zero, equally applied to all models (I believe)

I allways thought that Zeke was the allied code for the later model... can anybody tell me if he misinterpret something here ?

Fair enough: the answer is '48'. SWPA attempted their own serial numbers as codes for Japanese aircraft, and the Zero was serial 48.

As the practice of straffing on the way home spread in 8thAF FC, Col Glenn Duncan OC 353FG suggested to Maj Gen William (Bill) Kepner OC 8th FC that a specialist trials sqd be formed to develop the techniques. This was agreed, and 16 volunteers (4 each from 353, 355,359,361 FG) assembled at Metfield on 18 March 1944, under Duncan's command. Officially 353 "C" FG, but soon nicknamed "Bill's Buzz Boys". The unit experimented until 12th April, including 6 missions over enemy territory. Techniques then spread over the rest of 8FC and the Buzz Boys were disbanded. (from Mighty 8th: Freeman)
