MWiF is indeed the one!
I would pledge for the board game but since the odds of me actually playing a board game prior to retirement in twenty years are between zero and zilch I think I will pass.

Yohan,
"so no more posting over here, hunker down and keep coding! "
Hunkering as requested ... coding is looking good at this stage. June is looming!

Caranorn,
"Though that obviously won't be as good as MWiF."
Well I'm looking forward to playing more MWif than CWiE in the second half of 2006 (of course, I've been playing CWiE-II for nearly 18 months, so I could use a change!)

Saskatoon, Saskatchewan in Canada. This is the place name Bing Crosby used fo his magic words to make the sun disappear in the movie "A Conneticut Yankee in King Arthur's Court".
44 years old, married 23 years with five kids (21, 20, 19, 17, 16) and a dog. Did College of Engineering at U of S. Started in Computers, then went to another career for 17 years. Returned to computers in 1992 part-time and a self-employed developer full-time since 2000.
Started with Chess in Grade 4. First discovered wargames reading an advertisement for The Stategy and Tactics magazine in a SciFi magazine, but I didn't have the money for a subscription (Ah, for lost opportunities). First wargame was AH's D-Day in 1972 and then SPI's Starforce. Dropped Chess for wargames and haven't looked back (Sorry Steve). Discovered RPG's in a Grade 10 class project presentation with D&D (only published six months previous). Had two D&D tournament scenarios published in 1981. Lots of Third Reich and play by telephone Diplomacy and later, lots of Europa. I have done a little playtesting for the upcoming release of the Fire in the East re-release, Total War by GRD/HMS. Observed a couple of version 1 and 2 WiF games but had to leave gaming in 1992ish; too much time commitment to be a good father also. [;)] Returned to gaming a couple of years ago and my sons and I have had many a good gaming session. Only played WiF FE solitaire. Love it though. My game collection eventually expanded to over 2000 game titles. Lost all but 50 in a 1996 basement flood. [:@] (I think I am back up to about 250 titles)
Other loves: music (singing and playing), reading (SciFi, Fantasy, and Theology), and soccer.

RE: How about a Roll Call ?
I have played WiF from 4.5 to the current incarnation. I played the open beta of Chris Marinacci's version, but never through the whole global war scenario. My bidding has been conservative, however, so I have yet to play the U.S. or Germany. I play a very strong CW, Russia and Italy. I've struggled with Japan.
I also still play EiA and preordered 7 Ages, and have played both DoDII and Fatal Alliances, but not America in Flames or Patton in Flames. Our group usually plays WiFFE Deluxe with oil and limited reorganization.
Harry and Greg will be thought of as the Lennon and McCartney of wargame design when the history of the period is written. Unfortunately, my wife laid down the law and i am on a one-year hiatus from involvement in the game. When i can play, I'm considering bidding 8 to finally play one of the two powerhouses.
Hope you are all well, I've missed you. The project is in very good hands [:)]

No I got it Patrice... just pointing out how anxious I was to play another Rowland Pinder game.

RE: How about a Roll Call ?
It seems we have a few Europa gaming folks here. Glad to see I'm not all alone (although I haven't played the game in a few years). Just received my copy of Armies of Oblivion by MMP (ASL module containing the Axis minors). Good stuff indeed (from a game I haven't played in over year and preordered over 2 years ago). This seems to be a theme of for me for the last 10-15 years or so- I used to not be able to afford the games myself, but had time to play them. Now that I can afford them, I don't have the time to play them. Anyone else in the same boat ?

You can have both the money and the time but your relatives will be mad because you didn't cut them into the lottery winnings.

RE: How about a Roll Call ?
I have played WIF for well over 15 years and have spent 100's apon 100's of hours on this game. Alot of my games were played with DOD 1&2. I have forgoten how many games I have played but I would guess around 20+. I like to read the rule book at least 3 times before I play every game. Working out well laid plans and goals prior to each game is a must and we bidded for sides a week prior to starting. My mates call me the walking rule book as I kept pulling rules out and as they liked to read it for themselfs, i knew where to find it.
My worst defeat was a air battle with Italy against Russia. I lost 7 planes and 6p. I failed to shoot anything down and was on the +3 air coloum most of the time. Didnt even get a bomber through.
My finest victory was making Germany surrender in 39 playing UK. Was funny to see Italy DOW UK so they could rail a korps into Berlin to stop its capture. Polish cav was on the lose and was in range of Berlin. Uk landed in North Germany while France broke through in the south.

I have seen worse die rolling in Axis and Allies. The Russian player (with insignificant losses) wiped out the Germans on the first turn that Germany attacked.

Was a bit of both.
1st mistake by Germany was having 2 AC on there border with France. He mistook this for a korps and a AC. This led to a French invasion. A low odds attack with a high roll.
2nd mistake by Germany was to bypass forces for a quick destruction of Poland. These forces moved and there ZOC's hindered German troop movements and they were unable to act to a advancing cav. Poland was just about beaten but there actions forced Italy to enter the war to save Berlin.
UK sealed there fate by invading north Germany (I think I invaded Denmark, cant remember).
With the ability of the Allies to advance to a lightly undefended Germany, it was decided that Germany had a good chance to repulse the invaders but the damage done would not see France destroyed before 41 , most likley it would not fall. The axis decided to surrender and to place a more exp player as Germany.
This game was played along time ago and the rules were very different. There was no calling out the reserves.

RE: How about a Roll Call ?
Okay, here goes.
47, father of 3, grandfather of 1. [Grandson one year older than my son]. Don't ask ... long story.
Started with Tactics II ... not sure the year ... early 70's, I was about 13 or 14? First S&T Issue was #29 USN, fairly unbroken string to #145. Then a bunch more in the low 200s.
My favorite gaming period is WWII & Cold War hypothetical.
My early addiction to "monster" games is all SPI's fault, HTTR, WiE, WiW, WiE. Then, years later, Victory Games re-hooked me with their "Strike" series [Gulf & Aegean].
Spent 20+ years in the US Army [79-2000] so I was unable to play as much as I wanted. I was, however, able to collect games and at least read the rules, spread out the maps and play a few sample turns. I did fall in with a good group of gamers in late 80's [?] which is where I first saw WiF. It absorbed me, still does every time I look at it.
Found a WiF gaming group in Minnesota [58,295] after I retired and got to play a couple of games ... great group of guys, tough competitors ... and one rules lawyer [he is a lawyer in real life too].
I rapidly got tired of snow and just last September moved to the beach on Florida's west coast [83,306].
I haven't found any WiF gamers here yet, but I am hopeful.
Well, that's probably more than anyone wants to know about me ... oh, I'm a network & telecom guy now.

This thread had fallen back to page two in the forum and I think it deserves to be "pinned to the top". So I have done so.
I encourage new comers to the forum to read through this to learn a little about the other players making posts. And, of course, I suggest they make their own post to this thread.

RE: How about a Roll Call ?
hi Folks, my name is Brian and I live in northern Michigan most of the year and eastern North Carolina part of the year. I am a forestry labor contractor and when I get free time I like to be back inside. There is only one other WiF player I know of less than a hundred miles away, so I'm, like the rest of you, looking forward to MWiF. I've been playing carboard wargames since high school in the early 80s. I used to play Third Reich in tournaments a lot back than, and in a postal 'zine (Buzzard's Breath). Once I discovered WiF in the third edition I never went back. As I got older I gave up tactical wargames (Squad Leader) and mostly only ever play WiF nowadays, although I want to dust off my collection of the Great Battles of the American Civil War games (one map Terrible Swift Sword system games). I was quite happy when WiFCon was moved to Lansing, Michigan and hope to make it there again this year.
I have been using computers since the first 8-bit home computers came out but have never gotten into many computer games. The shoot-em-up video ones don't appeal to me at all and it's only been lately that there have been many strategic games you can play against someone rather than the computer. I guess my first experience with "Eastern Front" on the Atari 8-bit machines led me to wait till they got better. I guess that day has come and MWiF might be my first one. But until then it is hard to beat the sight of a game of World in Flames with all the maps, modules, countersheets, bells and whistles set up and in play.

Steve, I'm consistently amazed at how much attention you've paid to the community; I applaud your efforts. And I eagerly look forward to the chance to play WiF online.
Started with AH boardgames in the early 70s (Blitzkrieg and Anzio were my first) and stuck with the hobby off and on (didn't play much while I was on active duty) through the early 90s. Squad Leader and ASL were my favorites most of the time; actually had the privilege of meeting John Hill (Squad Leader's designer) in his professional capacity at the CIA a few years back. Then during grad school (1989-1995) I discovered WiF. Joined a DC-area gaming club - The Dawn Patrol - that engaged in weekly 6+ hours WiF sessions, cranking out a couple of games a year. Attended two Origins conventions (Philadelphia and the first Ohio event) just to play WiF; got to meet Harry Rowland at the first one. Also bought a lot of The Gamers boardgame titles; they put out a serious quality product. Also made several trips to Hunt Valley for Avaloncon; thinking about making the pilgrimage to PA for its successor the BPA convention.
Since leaving grad school have mostly been limited to computer games; huge fan of John Tiller's Campaign Series and Panzer Campaign Series. I think the The Blitz (www.blitz.org) is an awesome community of gamers; if there comes a day when there's a WiF ladder on The Blitz then my happiness will be complete.

RE: How about a Roll Call ?
Old time hand at wargaming (although not as old as some other here, I readily admit); played some of the AH series (things like Panzerblitz, and Panzer leader); used to have Chris Marinacci's CWiF, but lost that due to an HDD crash. Semi-inherited WiF (board version) from a buddy of mine who got his commission, and simply didn't have the space to keep it. So, I'm new at the WiF thing; if selected as a playtester, I'd need to be paired up with someone more experienced at it. I have playtested things before, but never a PC title (I playtested MechWarrior 3rd edition RPG).

But you never know someting could open up. It would have to be something severe though to create an opening.
