Introducing new fonts

Post by nmleague »

Someone asked a quistion a while ago, if different fonts can be used the game. Finally thought I would play around with it some today. I experimented with my fictional team Samuri, I had used a Chineese Takeaway font on that jerseys text, so thought maybe it would work for a number font, below is the result. Its fairly easy to do, with a graphics program open a U7 file to use as a base. I added a new layer for each number as I did them. I used font size 48 and it matched almost exactly, I had to make a few numbers narrower. As I did the number I moved it directly over the same number of the base U7. Once done I turned off the base, merged the visable layers (the new numbers), then add a new layer under this which I filled with the magenta color. I mereged these, then used the replacement color tool to replace any pixels that could cause a problem, with the magenta color. If you have any questions ask. Oh I then saved that file as a BMP file in the Samuri home uniform file.

Here is the SS for the away uniform with the new number font. I wasnt paying attention to the border size as I was doing this, I would probably go with a narrow border color.

I was playing around with this last night as well. To avoid having any magenta on the edges you can do one of two things:

- Make sure antialiasing is turned off when you make the number (I use PSP 7, couldn't tell you where options are located on other programs)

- Before you make the numbers, make a (temporary) layer which is the same color as the jerseys. Then you can have antialiasing on and it will blend in nicely to your uniforms.

Here is another font change. If anyone wants either the chineese look or the flames U7 file, I will send them to you. Have been checking alot of fonts and many dont have numbers that a thick/bold enough to look good.

Wow those look amazing! Editing numbers is WAY easier than I thought it would be, I can't wait till I have some time to do some of my own uniforms. I'll certainly post when I get around to that.

BTW someone said they made a bunch of single-color templates; are those available for download anywhere?

And one question for you nmleague: I notice many of the U7 files in the game have some texture on the numbers. Did you use that texture in your numbers? Does it even make a difference in-game?

I want the U7 file to be easy to use quickly, change from one color to another. So I took the u7 and set an interior color say white, I use the replacer brush to replace first one color then another and so on until the complete center is one color, white. I then pick a color for the border around the number say black and use the replacer brush to change all the border to black. That leaves me with a U7 that I can quickly change color of for one team to another. So basicly Im removing the texture from the original U7 that came with the templates. I keep that one U7 as a seperate template.

I created a u7 texture template (bmp) for the fonts I'm putting into the game. I multiply it with the number font that I'm putting into the game with Photoshop then I use the magic wand and cut the texture from everything but the numbers.

Bigsmooth I may have to try that, sounds like a good idea. In the meantime I have done two more fonts one is shown below. May done one or two more, but unless a font adds something cool to a theme uniform the basic seems to work fine.

Thanks for sharing this information. Hopefully I'll get a chance to make some uniforms and update my uniform tutorial and template. Here's a tip on creating numbers in PSP. Make a U7 template as you did, create your numbers as a vector object. Make a layer for each digit. This will make aligning the numbers easier. You can easily add or remove the stroke and change colors or the font. Creating raster numbers is fine but sometimes changing colors can be frustrating. If you are creating a number with more than one stroke then you have to use raster numbers.
