Havn't seen the need for it. PT's are much better represented now thx to the code change that allows the screening escorts to take the brunt of PT attacks (whereas before, PT's acted much like torpedo bombers....always getting shots at the highest value targets regardless of your screening force size)

However a problem i still see is not that PT's are too powerful.....its that they're too easy to accumulate en-masse. I have instituted on myself a new house rule limiting any base to no more than 1 full size PT TF (thats around a dozen boats) or multiple TF's of up to about a dozen. Reason why is that i'm currently experiencing PT "Fleet combat" in my game with Kaiser73. He's put no less than 4-5 full size PT TF's at a base he's invested...thats about 40-50 PT boats!!!!!! Kind of sureal to say the least as well as annoying because given that PT's are worth 1 VP each, they are the ultimate "throw away" weapon and make it difficult for real surface enagements to occur. The only real way to get rid of them is by straffing attacks (normal naval attack >100 feet will ignore PT's) which can be dangerous as any fighters caught at 100feet suffer severe a2a penalties.

Worst part is....even if i clear them out....he just "makes more" with the 'create PT' button

I have a rule with 2ACR .. can only create PT's in 9-10 size port

2) only use when fuelled . no one way paddling missions

3) need to escort with an AK if its over 8 ( or max) range.

Hopefully I wont be able to just wave a magic wand and have auto defence groups appear where i want them to. They will need escorting to the combat zone ( as represented being carried by the AK) if the AK' sinks .. not too sure what to do ?? need to discus further with scotty.

-The reinforcement mission to Lae war ordered to keep its course towards Lae, while the a A6M Daitai, formerly based in the CV Zuikaku, was sent to Lae to protect the unloading of supplies. Results weren´t so bad. The Zeroes shot down 5 P-40´s escorting a small bomber group, however, all the planes attacked and hit one AK, whose destiny is uncertain, however, most supplies where fully unloaded and the rice ration for the Lae guys increased to normal levels (the sake, unfortunately, was destroyed by the enemy bombers). In the CBI, the enemy finally gave up attacking our bases at the light and even the better protected B-25´s switched to night bombings

-The situation in New Guinea is evolving to a stalemate, as neither side seems to be able to keep air superiority or to run convoys to the island. The arrival of Zuikaku´s fighters shifted the air power balance to the Japanese, at least for now. The USAAF attempted to attack Lae with unescorted B-17´s. The Zeroes shot down two of them and another two were written off after crash landings at PM (non combat losses according to the USAAF...). No damage was caused by these attacks. Unfortunately, another PC from our last convoy fell prey to the Beauforts. The Army is somewhat enraged with the Navy hesitation in neutralizing PM for good, but the Navy claims that such an operation would take months to be organized given the logistics constraints in the SoPac front.

A review by the top brass of the 5th AF is scheduled to be conveened later this week to discuss the new Japanese tactics being employed vs. our heavy bomber squadrons. Action reports from the Lae missions indicates that 'Zero' fighter planes encountered over the enemy airbase are now utilizing 'Head on' passes against our bombers to compensate for the heavy defensive firepower of our B-17's. The tactic caused heavy damage among several of the bombers and two B-17's were downed apparantly due to either shrapnel entering the cockpits, killing or disabling the pilots or from MG/cannon strikes to the vulnerable front assemblies of the plane's engines. Two such bombers were lost over the airfield, both last seen losing altitude with multiple fires streaming from one or more engines.

A running fight ensued after the target was bombed with at least 4 more B-17's absorbing multiple strikes but the Japanese did not succeed in bringing any more bombers down despite pressing home their attacks with great skill and tenacity. On landing back at base in distant Cairnes....two more bombers had to be written off due to damage sustained during the long range strike.

Recommendations include the aquisition of new P-38 long range escort fighters. Availabilty of such however is limited.....5thAF does not expect to aquire any for some time. We will have to make due with P40 and P39 short ranged fighters, positioned at forward bases. A new battle plan is under review for a coordinated attack pattern.

-The Japanese Imperial Navy annouced today that Lae´s sake ration was restored to full levels after another successful supply run. Already scheduled is the deliver of antimalarial drugs enough to treat 2000 soldiers.

-Since Nik´s submarine force became unable to sink my merchant ships (I fear it will change latter). Well, I don´t how USA submarines performed in the second half of 1942, but in our game, they aren´t exactly the most useful units. Nik´s subs sank one AK and damaged 2 TK´s for the loss of 1 sub. I sank 1 AK and one DD for the loss of 2 subs. However, it should be noticed that I put strong emphasis on sushi and sake supplies. They help to increase the morale of our warriors.

Next thing will be a shipment of Sony transistor radios for each soldier/sailor....[:D]

-Good idea, a convoy will depart Tokyo to take these ones to the most remote areas of the Greater co prosperity sphere

Unfortunately, in my recently started first PBEM with non-historical first turn, he placed KB off of Manila and did serious damage to my sub fleet and all 3 AS's. Now those survivors are trying to escape and make it to a freindly port to get float damage down.
If he is not using his subs to attack your AP/AK, then he is probably minelaying or transporting troops out of by-passed bases.

I served 4 years on USS Canopus AS-34, thus I am partial to my subs. They will be back to help wreck the Japanese economy in good time...[:D]

-The Zuikaku guys suffered an unexpected setbak in the last two days, losing 2 planes to obsolete RAAF fighters. No pilots were lost in combat but one of them was so ashamed that he commited sepukku a few hours after the combat. The attacks resulted in few damage, but our sake depot was again hit, with bad results to the morale with our troops. The army leadership is putting more pressure on the Navy for an all out offensive to drive the allies out of Port Moresby. They argued that the sporadic bombardment missions have no purpose but to waste the precious fuel reserves of the empire in exchange for nothing!!!

oh yeah....NO. 76 RAAF Ozzers flying Kittyhawks spank the Zuikaku boyeeeez. Lae blasted back to rice age. The B-17 lost to Zeros was in fact an operational loss because the pilot extended the landing gear while heading for the deck. Japanese celebrate...they now have shot down a grand total of 3. ppfffffff. More will return!

Air operations continue in Burma. the RAF has shown complete dominance so far while showing the fledgling USAAF boys the ropes. The B-25 Mitchell is proving to be a popular bomber. Easy to fly and well protected and armed.

First the bad news: The JAAF CinC is seriously worried about the sharp deterioration of Ki-43 performance. In the last two days, fierce battles over Canton, against the AVG, resulted in the loss of 11 Ki-43´s, while only one P-40 went down. This came as a bad surpise to the Japanese, as the mercenaries were considered to be in bad shape after the last confrontations.
Good news: The first real combat seen by regular Ki-44 units was considered a big success. In two days the 50th Sentai shot down no less than 9 P-40B´s (from the AVG) and one SB-2, while losing only four planes (however, all the four pilots were killed or seriously wounded). Meanwhile, the Zuikaku guys added more 4 P-40´s to their victims, losing two planes and no pilots. A request for an increase in the Ki-44 production to 100/month was made by the JAAF.
In other news: Chinese troops were seen moving to Canton. A major land battle is to happen.

AVG was suprised to see a new fighter plane type over Canton.....faster, better armed and protected than the Army type 0. However claims for 28 enemy fighters were submitted and confirmed so....no problem [:)]

Looked to me like the Ki-43's got 3 of the P40's (along with a number of bullet strikes)

-To me it looked it was only 1 P-40 (out of sync?). The kill numbers for the Tojos show 9 victories, as they also shot down a SB-2, final results are 8 P-40´s plus one SB-2 for Tojos and 2 P-40´s for Oscars. Total planes lost to A2A over Canton were 11 Ki-43, 4 Tojos, 10 P-40´s and 1 SB-2. Your 28 kills weren´t actually so overestimated[:D]

-Two days of heavy air combat over China and New Guinea costed the allies more than 40 planes, almost all in air combat. The new Ki-44 is proving to be vastly superior to the P-40´s flown by USA mercenaries (I actually contacted Nik on private mentioning that the Tojo´s results are too good, maybe high altitude is an issue???), while the Oscar seems to be useful only to be used as a target to allow the Ki-44´s jump on the P-40´s (something similar happened with the I-16´s in the offensive against Kunming). The Zuikaku boys also added more ten air victories to their records. Even in Moulmein, Oscars were able to shot down one B-25C. Japanese losses amount to 21 aircraft, 13 lost in air to air combat (including 9 Oscars, 3 Zeros and 1 Tojo). Three Zeroes, however, were destroyed in the ground, in Lae.
