Each turn is 3 months. The 1940 campaign has a length of 27 turns (unless you turn off the end date). It can usually be played against the AI in somewhere between 5-10 hours depending on how fast you play. Turns against a human player can take between 5 minutes and an hour for each of the 5 different World Powers depending on how thoughtful/careful you want to be.
All understanding comes after the fact.

Buy the game. It is a great game and has lots of replayability because of production and research, the options are endless. In case you are wondering how long it takes to play a game by PBEM, I have completed two PBEM games, each one taking about 5 to 6 weeks. My friend and I were exchanging moves on alternate days. Both games went in to 1946. By that date the Allies had a huge number of units so in real time it took about 30 to 45 minutes to make a move. The Axis were beat down to nothing and took 5 minutes. Hope this helps.

It's a seasonal turn base. the whole campaign consists of 22 turns but you can turn off auto victory so it takes longer. It really is a great game
