" ...,the On-Mark Engineering Company, which had been converting B-26's for commercial use, obtained a USAF contract for a COIN variant (counter insurgency) variant, the YB-26K. The airframe was strengthened... Provision was made for a greater internal fuel load and permanent wingtip tanks were fitted"

YB-26K byOn-Mark Engineering COIN variant

Close enough, YB was the prototype of the A-26-K. A refitted variant of the A-26 which operated in SEA in the early 60's, at times under a covert program. The K variant was introduced with a modified fueselage and reinforced wings - apparently prior to the K, with the load outs on the missions the A-26 were flying, pilots were tearing off the wings performing manuevers. The version was introduced in 1966 and flew thru 1969. I have found NO note on the effectiveness of these planes which were used primarily for attacking supply convoys on the Ho-Chi_Mein trail.

Thanks pbear that is a great link. I was thinking earlier about how the 50's and 60's in particular seemed to dominated by air forces that flew a HUGE variety of highly specialized AC. It must have made maintenance and support a real nightmare. How do you find a qualified mechanic to work on a modified P-63 King Cobra?

The French beged the US to Bomb the Viet minh Divisions laying Siege on Dien Bien Phu and one of the project was to drop a nuke in the valley...[:D][:D]

French underestimated Viet Minh and overestaminated their own Fire Power well the same errors were repeted by the US 15 years later...

The P63 is the easy one, what about getting parts for the Nakajima Ki 43-II-Kai or the Aichi E13A1 "Jake".[:D]

Actually this is untrue. The French were defeated many times by the Viet-Minh during their conflict. The U.S. however never lost a battle to the enemy.

Actually this is untrue. The French were defeated many times by the Viet-Minh during their conflict. The U.S. however never lost a battle to the enemy.

The US may never have technically lost a battle, but at the end they were still fighting hard just to maintain a perimeter around Saigon. ALso, the French couldn't field nearly the size army the US ended up committing to Vietnam. What did the US end up sending about 250,000?

Peak strength was a little over 500,000 troops in 1968.

Couple million troops served in Vietnam all total.
