An Irishman Sings The Blues & Drowns His Sorrows/Troops

Post by Nemo121 »

This AAR resulted from Przemek agreeing to my challenge to whip a newbie... I prefer not to get overly involved in game mechanisms etc etc so prefer to play along the lines of "what would make sense in real life?" and then do what results... Of course it should be said that I tend to opt for the more aggressive/suicidal options most of the time ;).

We are playing Nik Mod 5.0. Full war scenario. We've agreed to limit our ASW Task Forces to 6 ships in 41 and 42, 7 in 43, 8 in 44 and I think it goes up to 10 in 45. Player defined upgrades is on and I've agreed to limit movement of the Japanese forces facing Russia. I came up with the idea of an AAR in order to get a few tips and "learn as I go". I think there's going to be a LOT of learning as prior to agreeing to this PBEM I only had WiTP for 2 days and our first try had to be abandoned after about 2 days of play when I "discovered" an extra 5 divisions I could commit to Malaysia and the Phillipines. OOPS!!![8|]

After looking the map over I've come to the decision that the best way to prolong the war is to try to hold as much of American might as possible as far away as possible from my critical areas for as long as possible. It seems to me that their great strength for much of the war lies in their Land Based Bombers and that if the Americans lose the ability to attrit my forward bases from their own land bases that they will be forced to rely on their fleets alone and that could buy me an extra year or so of relatively undisturbed production.

It also seems to me that I have, like Adolfus Gustavus, the potential advantages accruing to interior sea lines of communication (which I'll refer to from now on as SLOC) and have, at least, the potential for isolating the forces opposing me into 6 distinct, logistically separate areas incapable of providing eachother much in the way of mutual support. These areas are:

1. China.
2. Malaya & India.
3. South-Western Resource Region ( Phillipines, Borneo, PNG etc)
4. Australia.
5. Soviet Union.
6. Continental United States to Pearl Harbour.

1. China.
This will be primarily a land theatre of operations and my plan is to take Chinese resource centres, push them back to whatever resourceless bases they have and then contain them there by garrisoning the cities as required by the garrisoning cost and placing small blocking forces on the paths the remaining Chinese would take if counter-attacking. As soon as these objectives have been achieved every effort will be made to transfer troops from China to other primarily land combat theatres.

2. Malaya and India.
Again, a theatre in which land combat will predominate. The plan here is to use misdirection and unpredictable air and naval landings to suck Przemek into over-committing along one axis and then striking whatever has been stripped to provide troops to counter my feint. I've been reading the PzB ( short for PanzerBusche ?) vs Wobbly AAR and was impressed to see him taking India... I think it'll be fun to try so whenever I manage to finish off Malaysia I will rapidly transfer my land forces to India along as many axes as possible in order to encourage overcommittment. I will then conduct naval and air landings into the enemy rear areas dislocating his front and aiding the advance of the front line.

3. SWRG.
A mixed army and navy theatre. The Phillipines will require quite a bit of reduction and while that is going along I plan to take airbases in a sort of "outflung spiral" pattern so I can bleed the enemy naval forces as they try to transfer forces to counter my thrusts/evacuate. Afterwards I will prepare the bases I will require to either invade or fend off air and naval forces in northern Australia.

4. Australia.
Australia is a primarily army theatre if one chooses to invade it. If it is merely to be isolated and contained then it is primarily a theatre in which I must maintain a constant threat of long-range torpedo bomber attack on any ship movements into or out of Australia. I don't expect to be able to get my logistics together nearly well enough to invade Australia but a man's gotta have dreams [:D]

5. Soviet Union.
Depending on how India goes it might be possible to transfer troops to attack the Soviet Union sometime in 1943. I would love to liberate the resources there and fend off any Soviet invasions in 45.

6. Continental USA (CUSA) to Pearl Harbour.
Well, CUSA is the huge 800 pound bear in the corner no-one has ever beaten in a wrestling match. My plan here is to try to fend it off for as long as possible and then go down fighting ( quite possibly badly and futilely [:D] ).

So, that's my appreciation of the situation. I fully expect it to be incorrect in detail if correct in broad strokes and for any chance of carrying through my plans above to be sabotaged by the overwhelming nature of the logistics in WiTP... Just looking at the screens makes my head hurt.

So, onto the plan:

Basically my plan is to fling small forces outwards along expected axes but to an unexpected extent in an effort to secure bases as far from Japan as possible and cut enemy SLOCs such that his individual regions have to fall back on their own lesser resources and reserves. Even if that fails I think that Przemek will concentrate on reducing my most distant bases first thus buying me the time needed to fortify my closer, more vital bases...

1. COSU... Operation Shoestring.
All operations in this theatre of operations are being mounted on a shoestring. I have neither the combat forces nor the sealift to mount many concommittant operations and therefore I have decided to stage a large number of tiny, consecutive operations. I am supporting these operations with a mini-KB centred on my 2 x CVEs and 2 x CVLs, backed by a couple of CLs and 4 or 5 DDs as my only hope of defeating a riposte is to sink it at sea. Any force Przemek lands will overwhelm my foremost forces and let him roll me back to Kwajalein very quickly should he so wish.

Initially I'm going to hit Canton, Baker and the Gilberts before expanding southwards to take the Atolls around Nukufetau and Wallis Atoll with the forces from the Gilberts. Forces from Canton will head to Pago-Pago and take it on the way to Tongatapu. A total of about 5 NLFs have been committed to this thrust as well as two nearby Base Forces... I wish I could send more but I'm struggling to find the sealift and forces for even this. As you can see this will put the first spoke of the wheel in place around Fiji and Australia and hopefully I can develop my interdiction from there. ADS ships have accompanied the movement as I intend to base subs from Pago-Pago and, if necessary, Canton/Baker to interdict supplies/troops flowing to Australia/counterattacking.

Wake is going to be hit early and I'm sending an SNLF and a Base Force to Midway. This is essential because I really don't think I can pin Przemke in Pearl unless I can force him to consider that everything he sends into or out of Pearl is at risk from Betty and KB strikes. If I don't pin him in Pearl then my over-extension is going to be badly exposed and I risk rapid defeat. KB is hitting Pearl on Day 1 so that his BBs can't immediately pound Midway into scrap. I amn't sending any BBs to Midway as I expect Przemek to use his CVs to counter-attack my landings and sink a lot of the transports and escorts... It is my plan that once Midway falls and I can put some air patrols on it I will have my CVs in place east-south-east of it in position to ambush his withdrawing carriers.

2. Australia.
I'm keeping things quiet here initially as the important thing is to take the bases necessary for the creation of an air bridge to Noumea. I can mop up intermediate bases later with follow-on forces. So, the bases I need are Kavieng, Rabaul, Buna, Efate, Espiritu and Noumea. I will invade Rabaul and Kavieng in the first phase and then leapfrog the force from Kavieng down towards Noumea via the intermediate bases mentioned above.

3. SWRG- Phillipines:
I'm planning to land an NLF at Laoag and Vigan with the 48th Division coming ashore at Aparri. This division will move to Clark via Tuguegarao. The rest of my forces ( and all follow-on forces) will land at Lingayen. They will then proceed to Shock Attack Clark field. Meanwhile my uncommitted division back in Japan will load up and depending on circumstances land to bolster my frontal assault or, preferably, land somewhere lightly defended behind enemy lines in order to split his attention and forces. I'm also landing an NLF at Legaspi. This is pretty much a test invasion as I'm interested in finding out if Przemek will just leave it be and rush 1 PA Division north, trusting the other to conduct a holding action, or if he'll attack my landing with 1 or both PA divisions. The sooner I get a measure of his temperament the sooner I can use that against him.

56th Regiment will land in Davao and take that island from the defending division over the next fortnight. Once done it will transfer to Tarakan and begin its long march westward, defeating all it comes across. ( NOT BLOODY LIKELY!!! [8D] I'm quite sure that between logistics and enemy action the 56th will probably end up stuck in the Phillipines for a few months.) In addition an NLF and Base Force are to be dropped at Jolo. I want to establish a Betty Base there so that I can begin attritting the enemy surface fleet in the area.

2nd Parachute Regiment is going to perform drops on multiple unoccupied Phillipines bases in order to capture the shipping in them, secure supply for the 56th in Davao AND, most importantly, try to convince Przemek that he needs to keep all his bases heavily garrisoned ( thus greatly sapping the forces facing my front-line troops).

Looking at march rates etc I think that the Phillipines should fall by about mid-January... That may prove wildly optimistic though as I really have no experience with WiTP combat routines yet...

3b. SWRG- DEI etc.
Initial landings will occur at Amboina, Kendari and Menado... I'd like to take Macassar also but I just don't think I have the shipping and troops necessary. All of these bases have good runways and Amboina and Kendari can hold Bettys. I plan to fly Bettys in once these are taken and then use Kendari as the base for my bombardment fleet ( 8 BBs + CAs) which will support further small troops landings throughout the DEI and stave off Force Z and such Dutch, American and Australian forces which try to intervene.

Miri, Brunei and Jesseton will be taken by NLFs and Construction Bns and then built up by these forces. Kuching will be hit by an Independent Regiment, NLF and base forces. It will become another Betty Base and the Regiment which lands there will move overland

4. Malaysia.

I am foregoing the landings in Kuantan and Khota Bharu in favour of launching a major land attack at Alor Star. I am transporting 2 divisions and support to Songkhia with the Imperial Guards division racing down to reinforce. I figure that 3 divisions + combat engineers + a couple of tank regiments ought to be sufficient to very seriously threaten Alor Star and trigger massive committment to its defence.

When the time is right ( Alor Star has fallen and Przemek has sent more ground units to the front) I will consider landing the remaining 3 Independent Regiments at Mersing with a view to cutting his main army off from Singapore.

In Burma I am mainly going to mount nuisance paradrop raids using 2nd Parachute regiment to force Przemek to properly garrison all of his bases and thus spread his forces and am driving up there with 3 infantry divisions and a couple of tank and arty units.

Well that's pretty much it...
Apart from that I should say I find the number of units to ship etc overwhelming and the loading routine is still giving me trouble so I've had to leave a lot of support units on the beach. I'm sure this is my own fault and it looks like i is going to hurt me in the medium to short term.

Well, KB manages to fail to find a stationary port... That's it!!! NO MORE SAKE BEFORE MISSIONS [:D]. The damage to Akagi slows her down to a maximum speed of 18 knots... I pair her with Kaga and have them follow the other four carriers towards Midway. I expect the American carriers to be drawn there tomorrow. Unfortunately I can't travel at the speed I would have preffered as Akagi slows the whole thing down and I don't want too much separation between my TFs as I don't want them to be defeated in detail.

We had agreed that I wouldn't pre-place ships to attack Allied convoys at sea... Unfortunately the mini-KB reacted towards a convoy some 6 hexes away and launched a strike. Ah well, that's a cheap price to pay for Pearl being saved.

Hmm, it appears that while my attacks on unimportant targets are going well the attack on Midway is in serious trouble. Hong Kong is taking a while too but from what I read on the forum if I rest up and go again in a couple of days I should wear them down...

Questions:
1. If an enemy unit is in Base A with Base B being their only route to trace supply towards the rear and I paradrop and take Base B then Base A will only have its own supplies to draw upon, yes?

2. In the bases I've captured I've noticed very little supply. It is now obvious that I made a big mistake in not sending large supply convoys to Truk, Kwajalein etc so I could get a head start on supplying these bases and bring them the base forces they need. Ah well, live and learn
John Dillworth: "I had GreyJoy check my spelling and he said it was fine."
Well, that's that settled then.

RE: An Irishman Sings The Blues & Drowns His Sorrows/Troops

Post by Nemo121 »

December 9th to 12th.

In China my forces clear Nanchang and continue to move out of their rear area garrisons and towards all-out combat with Chinese troops. I want to clear the railways and get early access to the resources the Chinese are sitting on but it seems that the Chinese are mounting counter-attacks in the south with a view to liberating Hong Kong. This is going to complicate things hugely as Hong Kong looks like it will take some time to fall and I really don't want to end up bottled up in Hong Kong needing to be rescued... Oh the shame !!!! [X(]

Landings continue apace and nuisance raids against Asansol, Kohima and Jamshedpur by 2nd Parachute Regiment go in. 2nd Para also carries out 1 very important raid on Andaman. I plan to develop Andaman as a Mavis/Emily base so that I can get advance warning of any reinforcement/invasion convoys.

In the Phillipines my landings at Lingayen and Aspirri continue to go well. Strong CAPs have been flown into both bases and while I wait for them to recover their fatigue and take on replacements my ships are doing a pretty good job of avoiding bombs and continuing to damage enemy fighter-bombers. Once I'm fully offloaded I will bring in supplies and put up strong CAPs before moving down to Clark Field with the 3 divisions at Lingayen. Meanwhile the division landed at Aspirri will sweep down and drive the American forces before it as it joins up with the remainder of my forces at Clark. Unfortunately the 2 NLFs landed at Laoag and Vigan appear to have been too badly damaged in their initial landings to defeat even the Base Forces present. I am working on straightening my shipping out enough to bring a few APs full of additional NLFs down to destroy these hold-outs. At Lingayen my APDs and PGs have been sparring with enemy DDs and PTs. Losses have been heavier for the Allies than for Japanese forces and even though multiple APDs have been badly damaged and 2 the convoys have been protected.

Well the answer to the question of how aggressive Przemek is has been answered as 2 x Phillipines Army divisions react to a single NLF landing and Shock attack Legaspi. I suffer moderate losses and respond by sealifting the troops away on the transports which stayed nearby in case Przemek reacted in this way.

On the 12th for some reason 2 of his divisions which are retreating from Tuegalog (sic) etc route via Lingayen. Unfortunately this happens just as my 3 divisions, two tank regiments and SNLF landing forces were about to move into Clark field... *sigh* My movement is reset to zero miles and Clark gets another 3 or 4 days to dig in. I eject the two divisions in 1 day of combat and begin my movement again.

In Malaysia the landings continue. By the time they are over the Imperial Guard division is only 2 days away and will follow the seaborne troops into Alor Star almost immediately. 3 full divisions, plus a couple of strong NLFs backed by heavy AAA, artillery and combat engineer support should help me create the impression of a very serious threat. On the 11th I begin loading the 3 Independent Regiments and their supporting AAA, engineer Bns, HQ and Base Forces. When they are fully loaded on the 14th I will recon all enemy bases in Malaysia with my recon squadrons based at Songhkia and make my final decision as to where this amphibious landing should strike. I continue to make feints around Khota Baru even risking my BBs and CAs to subs, mines and torpedo-bomber strikes to give the impression that I'm serious about landing there ( at this stage a landing at Khota Baru is pointless... My landing will be aimed at cutting land lines of supply and Khota Baru is too far from the crucial ones and too easily contained to qualify as a viable target.). I pay the price with a single CA hitting a mine but I think that it is worth it as Przemek's voiced assumptions about my goals and strengths in the central pacific, the DEI and Malaysia are fairly wide of the mark.

My naval forces have taken Amboina, Menado and Jolo early on the 9th. Land-based bombers were flown into Jolo, Kendari and Kuching. I now have close to 100 Bettys and Nells which can hit anything going into any DEI or Malaysian port. I've noticed that the reported ship totals in Soerabaja are climbing astronomically. I think this is where Force Z has hidden but to hide this conclusion from Przemek I order two Betty groups to hit only Palembang and Batavia hopefully making it look as though I've overlooked Soerabaja. Meanwhile I have decided to bring all my bombardment TFs and heavy cruiser surface combat TFs to Kendari. When gathered together they will give me a solid core of 10 BBs, 6 CAs with a half-dozen CLs and close on 20 destroyers with which to oppose Force Z and launch the bombardments necessary to give my infantry-light DEI strategy a chance. The Bettys also really begin attritting any Allied movement. In their first three days of full strikes they manage to hit 7 transports, a PG, a CL and 2 MLs and 2 MSWs. Not bad at all!

As the day ends I spot what is reported as a TF loaded with heavy cruisers within bombardment range of Kendari. I have 27 Bettys there and 1 CL-led destroyer TF. My BBs are on the way but will only be there on the evening of the 14th. A group of 3 CAs can make it to Kendari if it moves at flank speed and is ordered to do so... I also have the option of moving another Betty squadron into the Base. I have the aviation support to manage it but if the bombardment TF get through two BBs will flatten my airbase and cost me heavily. Figuring that with 3 x CAs, a couple of CLs and a half-dozen destroyers led by Admiral Yamamoto I should be able to hurt the TF enough to cause it to abort the raid I opt to bring the extra Bettys in. This next turn is going to decide a lot of things.

In the south-east around Pago-Page my mini-KB continues to sweep up enemy troops using a combination of carrier-based strikes and surface strikes by its escort CLs and DDs. The last of the convoy is destroyed on the 11th and the mini-KB moves on to cover the landings at Upolu as my infantry finish mopping up at Pago-Pago.

In the central pacific Midway continues to hold out and all of the jockeying for position to ambush his carriers as they retreat from destroying my transports ends in failure... I'm going to withdraw and see if I can fake him into bringing his carriers or surface forces up to relieve Midway or reinforce Johnson Island. If he does I intend to dash in and wreak some havoc while staying out of SBD range of Pearl. It appears obvious now that I should have used the sealift dedicated to the base force for bringing in more combat infantry power. The South Seas Detachment just isn't managing to get the job done. I'm stripping any nearby bases in the rear of their combat infantry in order to bring more NLFs into Midway. In about ten days time I should have another 4 NLFs there effectively more than doubling my striking power in addition to daily bombings by two groups of Nells and whatever help my damaged carrier can provide. That should be enough to break his hold on Midway.

Night Time Surface Combat, near Kendari at 33,71

Here's the group which Admiral Yamamoto leads ( Tanaka leads one of my BB groups near Songhkia as I was expecting Force Z to hit there instead a few days ago. The battle is quite fierce and CL Nagara and CA Myoko eat several 14 inch rounds each. CL Nagara is left a battered wreck after the battle with 99 sys damage.

BC Repulse suffers only a few superstructure hits but Prince of Wales gets a torpedo below the waterline as well as some good hits from 8 inch guns. My destroyer screen, even though outnumbered, manages to fight on fairly even terms with the Allied destroyers although, to be fair, the more heavily damaged enemy DDs are those which were targeted by a couple of the CAs for a few rounds of combat.

Night Time Surface Combat, near Kendari at 33,71

After Admiral Yamamoto gets his shot my light cruiser group comes into view. I was hoping for torpedo strikes against the BBs and got my way. 1 torpedo slams into Repulse and seems to cause significant engine damage. With two of the escorting CLs heavily damaged and torpedo hits to both BBs the bombardment groups aborts. It cost me two destroyers sunk and a half-dozen DDs, 2 CLs and 1 CA extremely heavily damaged and out of the war for many months but it has saved Kendari and even though only 1 destroyer sank during combat I expect my Bettys to nail both Prince of Wales and Repulse as well as the De Ruyter and Marblehead. Even if they make it into the little base north of Kendari I can land NLFs there, take it and force them to scuttle. I'm very relieved by this outcome because when I saw 3 x CAs and a few destroyers going up against 2 x BBs I was seriously expecting to lose them all for little gain.

Another long list of strikes on small groups of ships escaping the Phillipines. Losses are minimal and results aren't astounding but as time goes by the attrition of his sealift is being accomplished. Hopefully it'll be enough to prevent him from being able to alter the positioning of his forces in the DEI. Hmm, my sub cordon between Pearl and Johnson Island spots a fast minelayer group and several DD groups. I also spot one group of DDs at Johnson itself ... The manual says that while slow minelayers and minesweepers get respawned the fast ones don't so this is a priority target. I order more subs into this hex and give KB orders to SPRINT midway between this hex and Johnson Island. My hope is that by tomorrow KB will be in range to strike at these groups either at Johnson or on the way back from Johnson. I don't think KB has been spotted in a while so I doubt thes groups will be aborted... even if it has been spotted I'm sure that Przemek must be feeling paranoid about any islands in the Pacific without a strong combat presence by now so he may well gamble that losing a few DDs is worth it... I really want the DMs though. *Fingers crossed*

Ground combat at Hong Kong

Hmm, ok, Hong Kong falls. I believe I might be getting the hang of ground combat. It seems to boil down to:
1. Bring enough infantry to outnumber the defender 2:1
2. Bring combat engineers so you can drop the enemy fort level.
3. Deliberate attack with the engineers using bombardment attacks by your artillery and infantry units to disrupt the enemy defenders and drop their fort level.
4. Once their adjusted AV falls to a level below what you estimate yours might be launch a deliberate attack.
5. Once you get 1:1 odds and the forts drop another level launch a shock attack and that should, pretty much, give you your victory.

Comments/advice? Remember, I'm a total newbie to WiTP so I may be missing something massive and am doing this AAR in order to learn and, hopefully, get a bit of advice.

More information about Przemek's style of play is gained at little cost. He IS definitely a very aggressive player and given the opportunity will always attack. So, if he isn't attacking in an area it can only be because he feels weak there. This is a useful indicator which I'll use to "pull" my forces forward. Also it means that if I can create a threat somewhere which he feels he can succesfully counter-attack he can be relied upon to mount said counter-attack. I hope to use this information to dislocate his forces as I drive north into Burma and, hopefully, India.

RE: An Irishman Sings The Blues & Drowns His Sorrows/Troops

Post by Nemo121 »

The main news today is that both PoW and Repulse go down. PoW was caught by a surface TF while Repulse was finished off by Betties.

Elsewhere I continue to ship reinforcements to Rabaul and Midway and try whatever I can think of to land airstrikes on Midway... It doesn't look good though and his subs take a large toll of the shipping bringing reinforcements to Midway. My APDs also get raped outside of Lingayen and it looks like I've made a serious blunder in committing them here since now I'll have much reduced ability to run fast transport TFs. Ah well, live and learn.

My carriers are to move 4 hexes from Johnson Island with a view to taking out nearby enemy shipping, especially the DMs. I really don't like their ability to mine my ports with relative impunity.

Ground combat at Alor Star

I am continuing to use deliberate attacks here as I don't want to take Alor Star too quickly... I want to draw as much force northward as possible before I land in the south ( probably at either Mersing or Johore Batu) with 3 Independent regiments in the first wave, with the possibility of reinforcing this with another division + 1 independent regiment about ten days later should his front lines continue to hold. That way I can cut his supply lines while maximising his supply needs. With any luck this might cause Malaysia to collapse more quickly then he expected.

Ground combat at Rabaul

[8|] I have 4 NLFs there right now and even now I amn't making any headway at all... I'm seriously considering lifting these forces out and using them to occupy Lae, Buna and Efate + one other place. The way I figure it if I do this I can fly Bettys into Lae, cut supply to Rabaul off and take it later on when lack of supply has done its work. A disappointment but possibly the only way to salvage something useful from this clusterf**k.

At Midway, unlike Rabaul, I plan to fight it out to the bitter end. Even if I don't take Midway in the end I can still use it as a lure to draw Allied forces. With a nearby replenishment TF to refuel my CVs I should be able to pull some of his surface force's teeth.

RE: An Irishman Sings The Blues & Drowns His Sorrows/Troops

Post by Nemo121 »

Unfortunately I forgot to save the combat replays from 16th and 17th December... About the only things of any note that happened were that my uncoordinated infantry forces got their a**es handed to them when trying to cross the rivers at Clark Field and just north of Rahaeng. Perserverance is a wonderful thing though and, eventually, large enough combat formations got across to withstand enemy shock attacks.

Looking at the combat replays it seems to me that when tank units shock attack they attrit the enemy out of all proportion to their listed AV. I've seen enemy Brigades losing a full 10% of their combat power to a single tank regiment's shock attack. These brigades would be pretty weak in terms of anti-tank power though so that probably that explains it.

By the end of the 18th December I have infantry at Clark field, across the river at Rahaeng and Alor Star falls... When it fell the enemy infantry withdrew to Georgetown instead of towards Kuala Lumpur [X(] [X(] [X(].

So it looks like this might be a golden opportunity to achieve something decisive if I can push down towards Kuala Lumpur whilst keeping the 7 enemy Brigades in Georgetown pinned back by holding attacks. I have ordered my invasion force of 3 x Independent Regiments to make for Songhkia at top speed. If I can pin the enemy into Georgetown with some of my infantry and tanks and have my two main divisions make for Kuala Lumpur I will be able to capture these 7 Brigades in their entirety, leaving the enemy with only 5 more Brigades with which to defend the rest of the Malayan peninsula. My current thinking is to launch suicidal forays into Georgetown with NLFs and my armour regiment in order to pin the enemy back whilst 2 infantry divisions move onwards to Kuala Lumpur. It is my understanding that I can't allow any allied units into the base between Kuala Lumpur and Georgetown or they will form a sort of "land bridge" whereby any forces I defeat in Georgetown evacuate into that base? Is that correct? I'd appreciate some feedback on this as half the Allied land forces in Malaysia ride on the answer.

Anyways I think that I can hit Kuala Lumpur with 2 divisions well before Przemek can rustle up enough force to stop me and if I hold KL then Georgetown will fall and with it his last hopes for holding Singapore for long. It will also allow me to redeploy my independent infantry regiments northward and allow me to use them to screen my flanks from bypassed enemy positions as I race into Burma.

As my Bettys have complete freedom to roam around the DEI the Allied ability to redeploy is now almost completely removed. I have therefore invaded Macassar under cover of a BB bombardment group and a CL surface TF while bringing a reconnaissance plane to begin scouting further bases for capture... I have 5 or 6 NLFs in Kendari and plan to use my gaggle of 750ton APs to land them in lightly defended enemy bases. The greater the defences the more NLFs I have to commit to the attack. E.g. The attack against Macassar is being launched by only 2 NLFs while I hold two more in reserve if a 2nd wave is needed. If it isn't needed then those 2 NLFs will hit another enemy-held port while the NLFs which have just hit Macassar load up and form a new reserve wave.

I am also fast transporting an SNLF from Kuching to Singawakang so that I can land the Independent Regiment which captured Kuching via a friendly port instead of over the beach. Once that's done I'll use that to take the port to the south of Singawakang leaving the Allies only with the ports on the south of that island... These ports being almost impossible to resupply will be left to wait for my mopping up forces. Singawakang is being bombarded by a BB TF which is low on fuel and heading up the slot between borneo and the rest of the DEI on its way to Kuching ( which has ample fuel as I've just convoyed in some 20,000 tons of it from Saigon).

My evacuation of Rabaul has also begin and I'm going to begin depositing forces at Lae, Buna, Shortlands etc as I evacuate them from Rabaul. Once I get Bettys or Nells at those bases I'll be able to prevent any resupply of Rabaul and slowly starve the defenders until such time as I can free enough forces to come down and take it. To help keep the pressure on PM and Rabaul I've also taken the little base two bases west of PM. I don't plan for it to do too much right now but if the Bettys from Lae can stop this base being invaded it will prove to be a nice jumping off point for an attack on PM, well within Zero range...

All in all I'd say things in this region are going well.

In the southern ocean my forces seeking to move to Luganville are hit by a CA which sinks 3/4 of the convoy. Losses in men are light and they land and take Luganville the turn before their transport finally succumbs to its wounds and sinks. There they are and there they stay :)

That pretty much has us up to date... From now on I'm going to try embedding pictures etc to help explain things as I think it's all pretty damned complicated and difficult to get just through the written word. It would certainly make my head hurt if I didn't have the mapscreen to check everything.

Defeated Allied Units Retreating!

Ground combat at 31,34

This is the combat happening in the river hex just north of Rahaeng. Even though I got 2 to 1 odds only 1 of the three defending brigades retreated. Strange. Still tomorrow I will shock attack again and the other two Brigades should fall back post haste. At that point in time the Allies will have to decide whether to risk being cut off in Moulein or whether to retreat towards Rangoon. I hope they retreat as I don't have enough forces for a proper screening action if I want to keep the momentum up.

Interestingly enough Przemek's emails to me are peppered by statements questioning why I'm putting so much force into the capture of US holdings in the Pacific and not concentrating on the DEI. He has even taken to giving me advice that the DEIs are much more important for production ;).

I wonder what he'd think if I told him that the forces I've committed to the Kendari area are equal to the TOTAL forces committed to the capture of US holdings ( less the South Seas Detachment) and that the DEIs are on simply "on hold" while my infantry concentrates on Malaysia. Hell, why rush to fight him now when all that lovely oil will still be sitting there in a month's time long after his ability to supply his forces has run out?

I also think I might finally be getting the hang of ASW actions. I've got a couple of hunter-killer groups centred on AVs which have managed to kill a couple of submarines in the past 3 or 4 days and they certainly are doing better than three times the force is up north of Laoag. Well, it is my first game after all so I can't expect to hit on the best tactics straight away...

Overall I think that apart from Midway, Rabaul and the situation in Southern China ( where Przemek is attacking and looks like he's about to take two of my cities from me... a situation which will only be temporary and which I intend to encourage as the further I can suck his forces into the south the farther they are going to be from the north and centre when developments there go to hell.

One thing to keep in mind with ground combat in regards to attrition/losses. Static results (where no unit retreats) tend to produce disablements (casualties) vs. outright losses. The most costly land result is a forced retreat. If a unit is forced to retreat it will always lose around 10-20% of it's forces permantly. these losses do NOT show up on the combat report...those are the disablements from the actual combat only

In the case of the non base attack where only some units retreated; Non base hexes allow indiv LCU's to dig in on a individual basis depending on a roll + how much time they've been sitting in the hex. So it is possible to have multiple units in a non base hex with different fortification levels. Only in base hexes do all LCU's share the same fort level (defined by the base itself)
