RE: CHS is GREAT!

Post by Ron Saueracker »

Batavia continues to hang on by a hair. Darn land combat. I'd niot be worried if it made any sense. The suspected invasion TF approaching Timor has materialized, along with some Kongo class BBs and a large portion of Japanese carrier air. Not sure how well the defences can handle a two pronged attack. The next few days will tell the story...

Timor is the target...Lautern to be exact. Massive landing. All strikes can't find the 50 plus ships bombarding the hell out of the beach. Whatever.[8|] The strikes were partials anyway so one questionable design aspect is alleviated by another.

Sync Bug Strikes AGAIN! What fun.

Post by Ron Saueracker »

For those of you who think that perhaps I'm over reacting regarding the sync issues I'm experiencing...here is the latest. This time Bill is the lucky one. I can't remember two consecutive turns where the sync bug has not cropped up.

RE: CHS is GREAT!

Post by ctangus »

Hi Ron,

I've been following this off & on for a while. I'm impressed that you're still fighting in the DEI in Sept. 42!

Question for you. (Not to prove any point, I'm just curious.) I'm playing the same scenario and in late Feb 42 I've already shipped in 50+k supply to Java from India and am currently out of fuel at Soerabaja (more about to arrive, also from India). Have you done similarly or have you kept Java supplied from the DEI too?

Hi! Yeah, I've been on and off with the upkeep as well...hard to constantly maintain an AAR. Up until about July, absolutely nothing was shipped to Java from anywhere outside the DEI. I was trying to prove a point that supply should be seperated from resources and made much less available in areas where there is no industry and manpower. I shipped in hordes of supply from Balikpapan, Tarakan, and Kendari and fuel from Tarakan, Balikpapan and Palembang. Not only was the DEI fully built up with DEI supply gained at barren resource sites, Singapore and Manila were supplied with enough to keep them going as long as they lasted...months past their historical surrender dates thanks to add water and stir supply. Shipped all the resources and oil to OZ.

Now I'm shipping some supply from India or OZ, mainly because I need cargo ships to haul the resources so I may as well bring supplies in on the way. Same with fuel, except that goes mainly to Northern OZ as opposed to Java.

Glad you are finding it interesting. Hopefully my crusty demeanour is not too overwhelming.[:D]

Hey Bill. Seeing as my replay was from Mars yet again[:@], what happenned to Hiryu? All I see is a bomb hit...1000 pounder I should hope given the range being 2. Did it penetrate, cause a critical hit (ammo or fuel explosion)? Was there a big Kablammo?[:D]

More sync crap

Post by Ron Saueracker »

On and on the sync bug drones....[8|]

I tested this along time ago and thought (assumed?) it was fixed. Goes great with the Uber Emily Thread. I am 100% sure that night naval attacks by anything other than float planes is completely broken or just not even designed to occur. During tests I took the RN CVs and set them up for night naval attacks vs Japanese TFs (these TFs were in hexes with Allied submarines). Despite the Japanese TFs being spotted at night by subs, never once did the RN torpedo bombers ever launch. Well, today reminded me. I set the FAA torpedo bombers at Koepang to night naval attack and NADA, EFF ALL, again, despite spotted multiple TFs at Lautern.
Maybe Joe and Don can have a look under the hood and see if aircraft on night ops can even do as they are claimed to be capable of doing.

Day Air attack on 51st Naval Guard Unit, at 104,78 On Johnston IslandHere is another example how the game mechanics are skewed and afford CAP far too many opportunities. These B-24s originate from the same base as the ones which attacked the airfield and the port on Johnston, but because the are assigned ground attack are forced to seperate from the main strike and select the target...if CAP were present the CAP would get a crack at the main strike and at each packet of bombers attacking LCUs, depending on the number of LCUs targeted. Clearly given the abstract nature of the game the ground attack missions should arrive simultaneously with the airbase/port attack bombers and any target selection of LCUs should come AFTER the CAP resolution phase.

Bill tastes the sweet flavour of VICTORY!

Post by Ron Saueracker »

So much for "Fortress Timor!" LOL Bill boots the malarial ridden defenders out of Lautern...the Portuguese change face and start jamming their noses up the Japanese behinds at the blink of an eye. The Portuguese at Dili are now to be treated as nothing more than two legged pack mules.[:)]

RE: Bill tastes the sweet flavour of VICTORY!

Post by Ron Saueracker »

Not happy with merely capturing Lautern and smashing up Dili and Koepang and the air units there, Bill is making a move on Soemba, bombarding Waingapu and dispatching some transports there. Getting fairly complicated in the DEI but I believe all is still well in hand. Those early heavy merchant ship losses should be making themselves felt right about now I'd say.

Perhaps after the extent of the defences on Soemba were revealed, Bill decides to retire without a landing attempt at Waingapu. This is coupled with a general retirement from the area for refueling and reamament.

RE: Bill tastes the sweet flavour of VICTORY!

Post by Ron Saueracker »

I'm a bit surprised at how little air opposotion I'm encountering, especially in China. Nanchang has had it's heavy industry considerably damaged without any contest.

It would be a nice present to see Oi sink to CD shellfire...again I think CDs are totally overated due to the fact ships never get to "withdraw" from concentrations of fire...they just take it like retarded red headed step children. Not having to deal with those torpedo batteries will be most welcome.

Hi Ron,

Just curious - what is the experience rating of your air groups attacking Nanchang? 42 planes, a day attack @ 10k, with damage to only one plane (I'm presuming flak?) and only 6 HI hits seems pretty lite 2 me for what looks like a cake-walk...

Also, @ Rahaeng, why R your bombers flying so low? Doesn't that 5-7k have a negative effect on moral?[&:]

A little relief is arriving in the nick of time.

SS Montoro, arriving in Soerabaja in a convoy with the Australian 13th Brigade.

SS Montoro

Montoro was a 4,507 gross tons passenger and cargo vessel built by Clyde Shipbuilding Co. in 1911, of 361ft length and 48ft breadth and with a service speed of 12 knots. At first she carried a crew of Australian Officers with other ratings being Malay, Indian, and Chinese, but this later became all-Australian manning. Operating a continuous service on the Australia, Java and Singapore Service until the mid 1920's she was then transferred to the Australia-Papua-New Guinea run.

The Company's intention to sell her in mid 1939 was abandoned due to the critical state of international affairs, and so commenced the wartime career of this grand old ship 1939 to 1945. Fortunately coming through the war unscathed, Montoro like others quietly doing their work in grey wartime camouflage paint, contributed markedly to allied success in the war in the Pacific.

Throughout 1940/41 modifications to merchant ships were carried out for reasons connected with the war. Montoro was fitted with a 4 inch stern gun, Oerlikon guns, Paravanes, and Degaussing Gear, four R.A.N. naval Gunners were assigned to the ship and the Deck Officers underwent gunnery courses at various Naval establishments.

Taken under Commonwealth Government control late in 1939, Montoro in 1940-1941 transported troops and supplies north and evacuated civilians back south. She was among the vessels which recovered the erstwhile prisoners of the German Commerce Sea-raiders, via Emirau and Kavieng (the Germans having shown greater compassion than their (later) Japanese allies.

Burns Philp ships like Montoro in conjunction with the ships of other companies, now became an integral part of Australia’s defence and communication, as there was no rail link to the north and roads and air transport capacity was limited.

In addition to the US convoys, the "ZK convoy" system was introduced for the transport of troops to northern Australia and the New Guinea area to reinforce outlying bases. The Army units were initially A.M.F. (sometimes called Militia) units, as the all-volunteer A.I.F. Infantry Divisions were still occupied in the Middle East and Malaya/Singapore. In the ZK convoys during this period 4121 troops were carried north by merchant ships, 525 troops were carried to Thursday Island, 1087 to Port Moresby, 1593 to Rabaul and 916 to Darwin all at a critical period of danger sometimes sailing independent.

Montoro's war service, consistent and steady through to war's end in September 1945 took her to numerous ports, including Gove, Milingimbi and the Wessel Islands, all vital R.A.A.F. outposts, forming early warning and a formidable triangular defence for the area between the Gulf of Carpentaria and Darwin against Japan's southward thrust towards the Australian Mainland.

I'm not sure what sort of flak is at Nanchang but it looks like China has been stripped of most Jap combat aircraft...perhaps to assist in Java. They are CAF SB-2s with OK pilots but lite bomb loads on a target without constant recon.

As for morale I think the whole concept is bogus they way it is modelled into ops availability. I don't concern myself with it much anymore because I have 99 morale units that refuse to fly, low morale ones that do, low morale means they will abort and not suffer unduly if jumped by CAP as well. Too much meaningless micromanagement for me. I'd rather fart around with convoys.[:)]

Aside from some sub action, Java remains the meat and potatoes of the action. Lots of airgroup rotation/upgrading going on though. Just upgraded a Wellington squadron to a RAF Liberator coastal patrol version...needed that given all the little yellow submarines prowling the GAP in the Indian Ocean (basically at the mouth of the Rat Run to/from the Middle East).

RE: Bill tastes the sweet flavour of VICTORY!

Post by Ron Saueracker »

Not a whole lot I can continue to discuss regarding the logistics model that I have not covered aside from the fact that supply is flowing in endless quantity. After maintaining the DEI, Singapore and Manila for the first six months or so entirely with supply available at resource generating centres within the DEI (strictly Palembang, Toboali, Tarakan, Balikpapan, and Kendari...all basically mining and oil centres during the war with no manufacturing anywhere near comparable to the amount of supply they "produce" in the game) I started bringing in supply from outside sources. Ironically, I did this primarily because I had run out of cargo ships to haul resources out of the DEI (the ships originating in the region had all left with their holds full of oil or resources) and loaded them with supply for the run in.

Perhaps Bill might want to enlighten us with his logistical situation, especially since he does not yet have the DEI under the rising sun entirely at this point. Be interesting if his supply situation was acceptable given the DEI's resources were the main reason historically for Japan to go to war in the first place.
