I've played several games with Vassal and it works great! I'm not missing any pieces...do you have version 2.5.2 loaded? The only annoying thing is it includes units from Mech in Flames which you have to sort out of WiF classic.

Vassal is program that lets you play WIF online or PBEM. I have just downloaded and will be trying it out today. It seems very easy to use but take a bit to get used too.

Cyberboard is the other way to play WiF via email. I've got all necessary files loaded on the online WiF Yahoo! discussion group. Go to http://groups.yahoo.com/group/PetesCBWiFgame/ and sign up. I'll activate you and you can access the files and ask any questions. We've got both CB and VASSAL membes who can help.

The version 2.5.2 is the version of the VASSAL engine, not the WiF module itself. To make sure you have the most recent version of the engine, go to www.vassalengine..org and click the Quick Launch button on the left and it will start the engine and update if necessary.
As far as the WiF module goes, the most recent version is on the website and is version 2.0. I am almost finished with the next version (SiF, PiF and CvPiF), but I've had a major computer problem that I can't get worked out to finish it. All I have left to add in is the CvPiF and I'm wondering if it might be worth it just to post it on the site as is and update it later when I get the carrier planes in place. Any thoughts on how much people want CvPiF?

The more updated the better, I have no problem upgrading the mod anytime something new is added.

Hi Ken

Great job with Vassal WiF! My only suggestion would be to make it easy to distinguish the units from the different mods. For example, at the beginning of a new game when you select the game you wish to play it would be helpful if you could also select (or deselect) the mods you wish to use. That way if you choose to play only WiF classic, the units from the extra mods won't show up in the counter pools. In the games I've played I keep seeing the units from Mech in Flames showing up on the map because we are not as careful when adding our new force pools. Some are easy to distinguish, but not all. This could be a bigger problem with additional mods. Thanks for the hard work.

Hi John (and others),
Each counter that is from any of the expansions has that indicated after the name of the counter; for example: the German Mech named "XXII Mechanized (MiF)" to show it is from the Mech in Flames expansion. You may have to expand the counter palette window a bit to see the entire name, but it's there.
As far as having a way to select the expansions from a list, I'm not sure if VASSAL supports that feature. If it does, then I have no idea how to implement it. I'm not a programmer by any means, just a guy with enough patience to sit at my computer for hours on end getting Carpal Tunnel Syndrome by doing the crop-cut-paste-save over and over with images of counters. I have a few games of CWBS and one for the Texas Revolution module that I did going now. It works really well once you get the concept of how the logs work. You basically playback your opponents log and then start, record and end your own log file. You can even begin recording your log while playing back the other guys, so that you mesh your new log with the older one so that you can reply in the chat window to questions or comments that arise, or in the case of some games, conduct one of your phases that is intertwined with the phasing players turn (i.e., like the DFPh in ASL).

See my "Getting Started" documention for a quick run-down on how to get VASSAL up and running and other basic info including playing via pbem.
