Game Info, Scenario List and Overview???

Post by Willard »

Unfortunately I was not lucky enough to play or own TOW when it first came out.
Now that Matrix is re-releasing / updating the game, I am pretty excited for the release.
In the interim, as basically a complete uninformed novice, it would be nice if Matrix came out with some info on the basics of TOW...like info, scenarios, general overview.

I am not talking about the feature previews. Those seemed to be directed at long time players who are already "sold" on TOW. Matrix is really neglected the new TOW player by not getting any of this info out. Anyway, for someone looking forward to the release and still on the "buy or no buy" fence, it would be nice to have same additional info.

Thanks!

Sounds like you could use a copy of the COW manual (hope this doesn't infringe on the copyright laws). Can someone send this fellow a copy of the pdf manual? I would do it myself but I'm a long ways away from home.

Also, could someone post the link to the user made/compiled training manual? This would really be helpful.

Hopefully...

Once the game is published they will post a FAQ on the game for people to read.

But basically I'm in agreement with you. There is a mindset here which is aimed at old timers and not at potentially new customers.

Dat's bad for everybody concerned.

I checked out that link above. The site had some interesting stuff, but seemed to be a bit outdated by a year. Additionally, it was really difficult to put the info there in "context" as I have no previous TOAW experience.

Obviously if Matrix is catering to the old TOAW crowd, using other website links and banking on TOAW's street reputation may be the way to go. If they are trying to expand their customer base to include others, like myself, I would argue this is not the way to go.

Anyway, just my two cents.

The feature which Matrix seems to be pushing most is the improved AI. This is very much something which is aimed at new players.

I'm not going to lie to you; a lot of people have a very hard time getting into TOAW. There is a lot of information there, but if you've played wargames in the past you should have a general idea of what works in warfare. What works in warfare, on the whole, works in TOAW, and you can play reasonably well without ever having to read a unit, combat or replacements report.
"What did you read at university?"
"War Studies"
"War? Huh. What is it good for?"
"Absolutely nothing."

That's a good point....this game does seem daunting at first for someone who has never really played a game like this....I remember feeling that way years ago when I bought Volume I....

If I remember right, when Talonsoft released the original TOAW back in '98, there was a demo available with just the Korea '50-'51 scenario...

Maybe Matrix should consider this option...
"If you want peace, prepare for war."
