Prioritize PI evacuations (Allied Fanboys ONLY!)
To the other Allied Fanboys [:D],
When it come to evacuating LCU's from the PI (Luzon mainly), which one's have to transported out (or at least partially to rebuild)?? I have the 2 HQ's, the PAF Aviation, and the 4th USMC Rgt. Any others?? The BF's are nice, but you usually have only so much PP to play with before getting over run. [X(]
What order do you try to get these 4 units or another out??

RE: Prioritize PI evacuations (Allied Fanboys ONLY!)
I don't exactly consider myself an Allied fanboy, though some may have called me that...
I do not pull USAFFE HQ out, but I do pull out Asiatic Fleet HQ and send it to Darwin. I have pulled a portion of the 4th Marines out, but they're too expensive to pull out in the early going (which is about the only time you can get the whole unit out). Normally, I will concentrate on base forces, whichever ones I can afford the PPs for at the time...

I concentrate on the base forces......the sooner you can take the air war to Japan the better.
RE: Prioritize PI evacuations (Allied Fanboys ONLY!)
All USN base forces , PAF , all HQ's , US infantry & tank units and 2-3 PH inf units with good exp(they have low replacement rate so don't take more).
RE: Prioritize PI evacuations (Allied Fanboys ONLY!)
When you take these units out, how do you do it?
Fast transport or Sub...I would guess normal transport would be a bit risky...

I try doubling up. If possible, use the AK's fleeing from Manila to pick them up. I try to send a two sub transport TF to pick up also in case the AK's get sunk. By mid'43, the Allies need every BF they can find to support their air fleet.
Don't forget getting out the Phillipine Eng Rgt, since the Allies have so few combat eng. [;)]

In CHS, Asiatic Fleet HQ. Very useful since there are very few Naval HQs in game..they hep with ship repairs,

RE: Prioritize PI evacuations (Allied Fanboys ONLY!)
In order of importance
1. PS Combat Eng regt (You only get 6 in whole game save that unit !!!)
2. Armoured Bns these are vital for atoll invasions
3. PAF Aviation
4. USMC Regt (Lots of combat engineers)
5. HQ's
6. Arty
7. 31 US RCT
8. Base Forces
9. PS RCT
10. PI Inf Div
The above is a mix of cost v utility.
The Combat Engineers and Armour are cheap to release so should be got out early and they rebuild fast.
USMC Regt is the one you really want to save and the US RCT but they are expensive as are the HQ's.

i normally try to get a cadre of EVERYTHING out (i will only lose a couple of units). The Japanese complaint about "cloning" is no longer valid (at least since 1.6) as when the unit rebuilds, it will be at lower experience. But, they will be around to rebuild (eventually).
Also, you guys are missing a good bet if you are not using PBYs and other seaplanes in evac'ing units. i use four methods (sub, air, AK/AP) as well as fast transport pickup missions (which are iffy since they are bugged, at least for me.) The last are useful to get troops out of the southern PIs,

RE: Prioritize PI evacuations (Allied Fanboys ONLY!)
I rarely take anything out. I want PI to hold into April if possible. I may start taking out the Asiatic HQ in the future, but nothing else. In the end the allies have all the LCUs they could ever need anyway. I will spend my PPs taking out AC and mobilizing other units like New Zealand and even Canada. Taking out units and parts of units can dramatically hurt the ability of the forces in PI to slow the Japanese expansion. Make the Japanese work for every square inch of ground in PI and DEI and you won't see Japanese players so often contemplating ivasions of OZ and New Caldonia.

Note that i did not say i got EVERYTHING out, merely that i got cadres out. Plenty left to defend, and i find that i run out of supplies rather than troops - and it is lack of supplies which is what causes an area to fall.
Unfortunately, there is not an EVAC mission to remove the wounded and busted up preferentially...[:(]

This was needed big time. Also mutiple role missions would have been nice...on leg going in the cargo planes bring supplies etc, on outward leg remove troops.

i agree - i called that one SUPPLY/EVAC mission... iirc, i suggested that way back. Oh, well...

Its only a matter of preference I suppose. I do think units fight worse when they are broken up. Also, I just don't see it being worth the PP. You're right though. Supplies are usually the problem. In my future games I intend to try and run some supplies in from the DEI before there is a complete blockade on PI.ORIGINAL: rtrapasso

As a matter for friendly debate, this is the last thing I want to have to worry about. This game already has too much unit fragmentation, which is part of the disappearing unit problem. Moving the wounded out and new troops in is part of the whole supply abstraction system, which works well. I don't want to have to tell PFC Jones where to go, or decide what to do with him if he's wounded.ORIGINAL: rtrapasso

"In my future games I intend to try and run some supplies in from the DEI before there is a complete blockade on PI."
I always do this. I'll start sending in small supply TFs from teh beginning and quit only when not even single ship TFs can get through. It usually costs me some VPs in sunk ships, but I feel a responsibility to try to send in the supplies. Those ships that actually get to unload usually then pick up the excess base units (once the Philippine air forces are smashed, there's a lot more air support there than you'll be able to use - these guys go to build up the Darwin and Port Moresby areas).

Here's a couple more thoughts on the subject:
To keep sub turnaround quicker, sub transport to a safe DEI base and use AKs/APs from there.
I like to concentrate on 1 or 2 units at a time, taking out at least enough of it (50%+) for it to become the parent & receive replacements once it gets to its destination. Plus the unit will have some utility immediately when it arrives. (1 or 2 Av support won't mean a thing, but 15-20 can.)
I agree with earlier posters that engineering units are a priority. Not only are they immediately needed elsewhere, but I don't want lots of engineers in Manila once I stop fighting in the air there and stop building forts. They'll just repair the runways all the quicker, burning up supply.
I also think it's situational. In one game I had an artillery unit down to 4 support squads at Manila. It was doing nothing for the defense, and I could change the HQ for a total cost of 2 or 3 PPs. The whole unit fit into 2 subs. 2 other arty units that still have most of their strength will fight to the bitter end.

Matter of taste, but I don't use subs for evacuation. Evacuation via (fast) transport or air is okay, since you normaly try to get out an entire unit - I try to evacuate Asiatic Fleet HQ, but most ships won't survive the trip south... But just saving a subload of cadres because you know they will resurrect the entire unit - that's too gamey for my taste [:-]. But maybe I'm not a genuine Allied Fanboy [:'(]...

Gamey, eh? Well, in real life, one could form new units if you had the forces. Not in WITP - they just sit there in the pool. This is only an attempt to overcome the silly game mechanics inherent in the game.
