Slot warning for modders

Post by el cid again »

Testing conclusively demonstrates that bombs in slots 197 to 214 are HARD CODED in ways we do not see or control. For one thing, they are coded by side. These bombs can be moved, but only at the price of incorrect options when the AI substitutes armaments. For example, if you put a 500 pound bomb in the 250 kg bomb slot, a Japanese bomber will use it instead of the Japanese bomb - thinking it is still the 250kg bomb. The AI does not "know" what is in the slot - it only knows what is supposed to be in the slot - and it acts accordingly - wether or not it is true!

In the editor manual it says:

"These devices can be altered, but they should never be moved."

Yes it does. But they are horribly organized and I changed that. There appear to be ranges - that is some ranges for ships weapons - others for air - others for land - etc. Over time as many as four duplicates of the same weapon have accumulated in CHS - and this created a dirth of slots - as well as a problem just finding something. I have reorganized the slots - fully cognizent of the prohibition - and am engaged in testing - with independent testers as well - to sort out the issues.

Something else I have learned is that a formation MUST BE assigned itself as a formation. This seems not to have been known by several CHS modders (and presumably others). It MIGHT imply one could cause a unit to evolve if the formation was assigned a different formation - but don't assign it zero - and TEST TEST TEST if you don't assign it itself.

Well, I go by this rule:

"If the manual says you can do something, take it with a grain of salt. If the manual says you can't do something, it's most likely correct".
