Submarine Boat AK?

Why is this class named so? What it had common with submarines?

They were built in a World War I emergency shipyard that was operated by the Submarine Boat Company (which had previously specialized in building submarines).

Another strangely named class was the "Hog Islanders" were built an another emergency shipyard established on an island near Philidelphia named Hog Island.
