IS 2 Andy Mac v Sneer
OK I really like the look of Iron Storm so I am starting a game with Sneer. I will paly the Allies and I will do an AAR but probably only for the first month or so to help identify any issues with the mod.
So far I have to say it looks reallly good.
Some houserules for you.
1. All Allied ships remain in port on 1st turn
2. Surprise is on (I will discuss this later on)
3. Allies can move air in Malaya but no more than 2 Sqns to Singapore and can debark air groups from RN carriers in Port.
Now my initial thoughts before Sneer sends me 1st turn is to debark the 60+ Sea Hurricanes and move my 2 Hurrican Sqns to Singapore.
All will be set to 70% CAP (Personal rule that may need revisiting in Nik Mod is no more than 70% CAP)
I am expecting an attack on Singapore by KB on 1st turn which is unfortunate as those are the toys I want to play with.
I did not specifiy to Sneer in my request for a game that there would be no strike on Singapore so I am tuck with it (it really is the logical move for the allies and I expect to lose 4 or 5 Capital Ships in Harbour.
1st Turn tomoorw and we will see what happens.
Kudos to Alikachi for a wonder full mod

RE: IS 2 Any Mac v Sneer
p.s. I can move air in Malaya but cannot move it into malaya so no AVG on turn 1.
During my planning for turn 1 I have a few observations.
Even with my increased CAP the RN fleet is going to get devastated at anchor.
Now I would strongly recommend that allied players of this mod set up some house rules (that I neglected to set up)
1. Surprise is off and allies are free to move ships in Sing Harbour if ANY airstrikes or landings East of Singapore occur anywhere other than China or if any amphib TF is withing 3 hexes of PI or HK.
2. Surprise is off and RN fleet stays at anchor if only IJN attack on turn 1 is at Singapore.
3. Surprise is ON if attack on Manila/PI only is envisaged on turn 1
Basically surprise is just to powerfull as it is built to reflect a navy getting caught and completely shafted as the US were at PH.
With a powerfull fleet at Camran (an Warburton to fly recon !!!!!), recent occupation of Thailand, '11 Group' Park and 'Taranto' Cunningham in charge and the RAF's BOB experience with Radar that kind of overwhelming surprise is just not feasible I have ran multipleturns and only getting 3 or 4 fighter up come on Park would never be that slack unless he completely sozzled or down with Malaria !!!!
Having now ran about 10 1st turns I would suggest to Alikachi that he needs to strengthen Singapores Fighter Cover and reduce the size of the prize at Singapore its just to much to resist on turn 1 a few of those ships should be on there way to the base perhaps POW is with Repulse and Ark Royal is at Colombo. Not sure its ealry yet but I feel my Fleet is about to get creamed

RE: IS 2 Any Mac v Sneer
Hey Andy! I'll definitely be observing how your game goes.. You make good points about Singapore. I already have the two BCs heading up from the south.. what if I moved Ark Royal and Hermes into the Indian Ocean, say escorting a convoy of troops in, roughly between Port Blair and Columbo? I don't want to move too much - the Japanese player should still be forced to choose between Pearl and Singers - but at the same time, you're right, the RN could not have been caught with its pants down, at least not AS badly as the USN. Maybe I should move a couple of Hurricane SQNs back to Singapore.
RE: IS 2 Any Mac v Sneer
Another thought is increasing the experience of the RAF squadrons in Malaya, most of the new groups have combat experience in the Mediterranean...
RE: IS 2 Any Mac v Sneer
Aye I think 2 of the Hurris need to be moved to Singers
I think moving Ark Royal at least would be a good move plus perhaps remove one of the RN BB's and have it at West Coast at 50% sys or sometthing to replicate a major rebuild in US hands
Increasing xp would be good but my initial observation is you have already covered that by increasing the xp of replacement pilots.
Its really just the surprise bonus that kills it.
With my CAP set up and an 8 CV assault of Singapore only 2 capital ships are sank normally and KB loses 60 - 100 aircraft compared to 100 - 150 ish RAF/FAA planes at least the RAF puts up a fight. (and RAF leaks through japanese CAP in 4 out of 10 1st turns with no surprise I hit an IJN flat top with a torp or bomb)
With surprise its 4 or 5 sank and only 4 RAF planes on CAP in morning. Basically surprise just doenst work for a Singapore raid it is to powerfull as it was designed to let the game replicate PH.
I don't think this is a mod issue as such (except for redistributing fighters in malaya and allied players can do it themselves if anything I would have perhaps 2 - 3 additional sqns of Hurricanes currently in India at start in Singapore on 70% CAP perhaps with one of them in Spits or Kittyhawks)
My main concern is that I think Allied players need to agree with IJN players whether or not a Singapore strike is contemplated if Yes then agree that surprise is off.
Anyway I have not had sneers turn yet....lets see what happens !!!!

RE: IS 2 Andy Mac v Sneer
Greetings Andy Mac:
Definitely looking forward to your game with Sneer. I've read a few of these AARs now, and Sneer (along with esteban and Cap_and_Gown) is one of the most capable opponents as Japan. My goodness he's aggressive!
Alikchi's mod is a good one. I think your House Rules are pretty down-to-earth, but I'm thinking CV Hermes (and other RN carriers) are at Karachi, Colombo or Diamond Hbr to start. This seems most logical as the RN is setting up on more of a war footing than is the USN.
The strike on PH always struck me as the poorest of the three options anyway IMHO. I'd like to see a 2-3 CV raid for one strike at PH, and another 2-3 CV + LBA at both Sing and Manila. But, I think you have a 'one port' House Rule in effect if I'm not mistaken.
Irregardless, good hunting! Here's to what I'm sure will be a memorable AAR.

RE: IS 2 Andy Mac v Sneer
OK more thoughts on initial set up for Alikachi.
Jap sub placement feels a little iffy.
They are all at Pearl and actually I cannot see any IJN players not hitting Singapore.
I would suggest either give the IJN a few more glen subs to cover Bay of Bengal or moves some of the ones clusetered around Pearl
I have a few thoughts on how I can make Sneer pay for hitting Malaya.
US Battlefleet can fast transport 16,000 men in one lift.......now supposing they were to land on Wake or Kwaj early in the war [:D][:D]

RE: IS 2 Andy Mac v Sneer
no bullets shot by now
it is my first and probably last post here as soon there will be combat done and we will try to comunicate in forum with diffrent AARs
there is a house rule about not using torpedo LBA over port as there was not enough place for it so my 100+ nells will be only slightly efficient.

I have moved over around six RO-boats and a sub tender from the Kwaj area to Kompong Song, I think - the RO-boats are clustered around Singapore at the start of the war.
But you're right, I have no fleet boats in Bengal, I'm sure there would have been at least a few in this scenario.. I think I'll move over another Sub Squadron.
RE: IS 2 Andy Mac v Sneer
Just a quick update for you Andy since we've been discussing this in Sneer's thread -
When I made the scenario, I hadn't planned on the Japanese player attacking Singapore with the KB. So, to offset that, I'm thinking that I will create another scenario, almost exactly the same as default IS, but modified so the game is more balanced when the Japanese attacks Singapore. Iron Storm Default and Iron Storm -Singapore Attack, maybe.
The real issue is Surprise though like you said.. gotta make note of that

OUCH
Today was a sad day for the Empire.
Despite Hong Kong/ Wake etc getting invaded a monumnetal party was held on 6th December accross Malaya where every Coast Watcher/ Radar Operator/ Cargo Ship Captain/ Radar Operator and all senior officers of all services (basically anyone with any authority to launch a fighter) and despite radio comms from HK indicating they were getting attacked no fighters were launched to defend Singapore.
A raid of over 100 G3N bombers passed overhead but so deep was the hangover that not one radio or phone call was made to warn the RAF.
Despite the rising tensions in the area and all the warning signs the RAF and RN were caught by total surprise.
* Japanese Carriers crossed the busiest sea route in the world in total stealth sneaking up on Singapore and launching a strike that has devastated the RN at anchor.
12 Fighters up for a joyride and an air race sponsered by the local brothel were in a position to intercept and by some weird co incidence were armed managed to launch an attack.
(NOTE to any allied playes of Alikachi's mod do not agree to Surprise being on if Singapore is intended to be hit results are just impossible)
I dont know how bad it is but Ark Royal and Hermes are sank and most of the rest are damaged. I actually got off light butmy fighter force has been crucified on the ground.

RE: OUCH
Ah k Alikachi
My main gripe is the paucity of aircover over Singapore and Surprise I think the Japanese should hit Singapore I just dont think that an 8 carrier strike should be possible and get surprise this isnt like moving through the empty North Pacific against newly installed radar installations against a power thats at peace.
This is one of the busiest waterways in the world against a military at war for 3 years with Battlehardened experienced fighter controller (Park Commanded 11 Gp for god sake) with radar installed and multiple allied enclaves in the area.
If Singapore is to be hit (and I think it should) Surprise must be off. No allied player should accept a game where Surprise is on.
Wake and HK are getting hit 4 hours before dawn hits Singapore !!!

RE: OUCH
P.S I know its still Beta and I am still enjoying the mod so dont be to concerned about my lil rant.
I do think Surprise needs to be off and that a few more fighter Sqns need to be up and on alert in Singapore even if its a few sqns of Buffalos or a Kittyhawk Sqn.
I had 2 Spit and 2 Hurricane Sqns there and in total launched not enough cap
Now the good thing is my elite pilots are still alive and I had dispersed 4 Sqns of high xp Swordfish so this aint over

No no, rant all you can! Everything you say helps me fix this up [8D]
Clever move on the Swordfish, they're nasty I tell you - I've been sinking AI transports left and right. Sneer will probably have to run AKs in to Singora from Saigon to supply Yamashita.. hint hint [;)]
Hmmm, I definitely see what you're getting at..
What you said about the North Pacific and the South China Sea is very very true. Here's what I'm thinking - two slightly different scenarios with mandatory house rules..
Scen 50: Default attack against Pearl or any target other than Singapore
1 - Surprise is on.
2 - Subs will be in their standard positions around Pearl, etc
Scen 51: KB attack against Singapore.
1 - A mandatory rule. If there is to be an attack on Singapore, then surprise must be off.
2 - Subs will be adjusted to show that Japan is now facing West instead of East.
3 - This scenario could double as a "US doesn't enter the war until May 42" scenario. Commonwealth reinforcements would be accelerated.
4 - Two squadrons of Hurris that are now in Alor Star are instead based at Singapore, because Park isn't stupid and would have transferred AC in.
How does that sound?
RE: OUCH
PS - How about Warspite undergoing refit at Seattle? I think she actually was getting rebuilt in the US in this time period so it would be appropriate! Plus, I've adjusted her (and Repulse's) experience levels to reflect their shooting.. so she'd be worth saving. [:D]
RE: OUCH
Balance is an issue on the mod Alikachi so an annihalating strike is probably required as the allied battle line is formidable I would almost prefer a delay of a year - eighteen months on Indomitable and perhaps one of the G3's plus have Canada in refit on the West Coast and have a TF on the way to Singapore at start with Ark Royal/POW and perhaps Warspite.
This reduces the initial hit on Singapore but it is still a worthwhile target with 2 BB's a CV and a CVL and have a 2nd US Carrier at Pearl that gives the IJN a real choice
I would also consider giving the Japanese perhaps 6 - 10 Small merchant conversion CVE's to balance off a smaller haul at Singapore
But this is early days so lets see what happens

RE: OUCH
Sounds good I think 4 Sqns plus the Beaus is about right for CAP.
I think the allied Carriers should either have offloaded fighters or be in a TF in harbour as well
But I think the two options look good.

RE: OUCH
These are really good ideas, keep it up [:D] I especially like the 2nd US CV at Pearl idea.. If I don't make Pearl more enticing then no one will go for it!
I'll look at the RN reinforcements some more.. I agree with you I think, though. I have 3x BC and 2 CV arriving for the RN within three weeks of the beginning of the game.. maybe I should slack off the reinforcements until 1943, push the third G3 (Incomparable) back a little farther.
I'll keep following, interested to see how this plays out!

RE: OUCH
The note to Sneer....please note the strategic deception I do actually have 20 fighters operational and a few CL's are less than 50 sys.
In prinicipal though Surprise must be off. By trying to increase CAP with surprise on I have decimated my fighter force as they were caught on the ground I would have been better emptying Singapore AF.
"Yeah but I am strongly recommending to Alikachi that its too much I don’t have a single operational fighter and all CA's CL's and BB's are between 50 - 99% damaged with heavy float and fire.
Not a single ship could survive 1 hex
Surprise to the extent achieved is not possible at Singapore I will never play this mod again with surprise on if Singapore is the target its just unplayable
I am recommending delaying RN follow on forces and take some units out of Singapore at start plus put a second US CV at Pearl to make it a real choice for the IJN.
There is no point in setting up an enhanced RN mod if the RN gets annihalated on turn 1
I am also recommending some more Japanese CVE's and significant RN reinforcement delays to balance it out.
Losing 6 Capital Ships is bad enough (and if I get one out I will be amazed only POW can make more than 5 knots)
It is the single most devastating strike I have ever seen.
Without surprise KB would have lost 100 aircraft and sank 1 or 2 ships but the AF would be in decent shape to retaliate and/or cap the harbour to allow the cripples to escape as it is the AF is marginal even if I fly fighters in and your follow on strikes will wipe out the rest of the Airforce and Fleet is dead."
