Strange AI behavior

Post by el cid again »

My Philippines forces have (under total AI control - computer vs computer) decided to abandon their posts - to a man - and run as far as they can from the battle zone.

Almost the same thing in Malaya - almost everything fled to Singapore - except some units RETOOK Khota Baru (when stupid Japanese abandoned it) and STILL hold the city.

Is this normal stupidity or something new?

And the answer is:

In my new location file, the new hex defined South of Manila is in the same slot that Bataan used to be in.

There is apparently HARD CODE saying "ALL units run to Bataan" - at least if AI is boss. Similarly, I speculate there is hard code saying "Almost all units in Malaya run to Singapore."

I can fix this of course - swap Lucena for the Olangapo/Bataan hex and everyone runs to Bataan again. Or swap Lucena for Manila and everyone runs to Manila - which at least

a) Has no malaria
b) Has more supplies.

I hate this hard code stuff.

For players who like Mac's idea - defend Bataan - I will to the first in RHSCVO - because that is for those who want "history exactly as it was."

For players (like me) who think Mac was nuts, and that it makes more sense NOT to give 100% of the troops malaria and denge fever, and that Manila is much more defensable than Bataan in any case, I will do the latter in RHSBBO. That is for history as it was officially planned. And note that MacArthur HIMSELF cancelled the plan to retreat to Bataan - stopped stockpiling supplies there several years before the war. So BBO has him honoring HIS OWN plan!

Not that I like running and abandoning forward positions - if you play AI it will - and nothing I can do about it.
